What's your MN Niggle

JackThayer · 25/02/2024 17:19

Mine is when the thread is something along the lines of "what's your favourite dinner?" Or "Worst holiday you've ever been on?" And OP replies to every single post!

OP posts:
OriginalUsername2 · 26/02/2024 11:01

”You sound delightful”

It hints that women are supposed to be a fucking “delight” at all times!

seaweedhead · 26/02/2024 11:25

People who try to stir up a transgender debate when it is completely irrelevant to the point of the op.

Giggorata · 26/02/2024 11:53

Lack of basic comprehension. A poster will post the issue, clearly stating the number of children or whatever, and then follows a post asking “how many children?”.

Some prevailing attitudes:
Interested in woo or clairvoyance? There's no such thing, it's all nonsense, they're deluded or frauds.
Don’t want men in women's spaces? You're transphobic, bigoted, right wing.
Baby Boomer? Greedy, complacent, probably developing dementia.

etc.

Posts from men, enlightening the women.

The point of the OP is points about MN which 'niggle' people. For me, that would be the constant disparaging of this site - emanating from within and beyond it - as 'transphobic' because it happens to be about the only place on the internet which permits full, frank discussion of a current, important issue for its key target demographic: women.

Of course the deliberately inflammatory, lazy finger-pointing and protestations of 'transphobia' without providing examples, context or nuance, are going to generate a counter argument.

Did you expect that they wouldn't?

FictionalCharacter · 26/02/2024 12:13

Well said @SerafinasGoose .
I believe we still get infiltration by people wanting to gather evidence of MN’s awfulness to put on social media as “this is what MN is saying” or “MN thinks…”. They jump on FWR threads to tell us off quite frequently.

Yeah and those are the 'terrible things' that get deleted. Put there deliberately for screen shots to say what an awful site this is.

FictionalCharacter · 26/02/2024 12:21

Another one! People over 60 (or even younger) being referred to as “old”. The assumption that we’re all retired and/or suffering from dementia, or at least are forgetful. It’s as though some people haven’t noticed that retirement age is 66 for those of us in our early to mid 60s, which means that many of us will be working full time in demanding jobs until that age.

NinaPersson · 26/02/2024 12:24

I find all of the abbreviations annoying. DH, DD, DS and so on. When you’re speaking about the people do you call them my dear/darling husband/son/daughter I find it especially annoying when the post is talking about DH in particular when he’s being a dickhead, he’s not being a dear is he?

Even worse is ddog or dcat, why????

There was an example of that quite recently. It wasn’t a fwr one, I can’t remember what it was, but someone posted something extremely inflammatory which the majority of responders thought was appalling. The thread got pulled, but by then screenshots had appeared on X with “This is what MN thinks”. Because they want people to think MN is a group of clones with a hive mind, not a collection of forums open to anyone and used by people with a diverse range of views. Of course, people piled on to the thread in X to agree how terrible MNers are.

GloriaMundy · 26/02/2024 12:28

@Scalottia , *People who write 'I didn't want to read and run'. Why write anything at all?
Because it keeps the thread active. Sometimes it's a post that deserves an answer that I might not be able to give. I don't normally write 'I didn't want to read and run' but I might only be bumping the thread.

It was SEN related. I think it had something to do with a piece on the BBC about an educational provider charging a lot of money for a childs education.

What would you rather say

Hubby/Wifey/kiddo?

GalileoHumpkins · 26/02/2024 12:55

The absolute obsession with being middle class or appearing to be middle class, what is that about?

Husband wife daughter son would suffice. Not a fan of the ones you said

Ooo but that’s in real life too isn’t it. I don’t get the obsession but I’ve found it’s usually those that come from impoverished childhoods who feel the most need to bang on about it.

You’re probably right but I never see them being used anywhere else except TES, but I’m told they followed from
mumsnet. I think it’s the dear/darling bit that pees me off.

Especially when they are anything but dear/darling.

They're internet forum shorthand. Saves time. And using jargon and argot help to foster a sense of community and belonging amongst members of a community.

But some can be troublesome: DS - son or sister? DP - parents or partner? BF -best friend, boyfriend, breast feeding?
The meaning is usually easily discernable from context, but can be confusing in more complex scenarios with a big "cast"!

Minnimoomin · 26/02/2024 13:10

Clickbait titles are an instant "hide thread" for me, along the lines of "AIBU to have said". For some reason I'm fine with "AIBU to have said this", it's the unfinished sentences that wind me up.

I don't know anyone in real life that bangs on about class.

People who quote "unmumsnetty hugs"

I see "unMN hug" a lot, and have no idea what it means?

MN isn't really a huggy, soft, cuddly kind of place. But sometimes someone is going through something genuinely awful, and so people send unmumsnetty hugs to indicate sympathy and comfort. I've never done it I don't think but it doesn't annoy me, it's usually for someone who needs a bit of support.
