Went to see a medium

I went to see a medium yesterday for the first time. It was pure indulgence to see if there was anything in it. The medium did not hit on anything that resonated with me and I felt it was pure speculation. I'm curious now though... Has anyone here had a really accurate psychic or medium reading that simply couldn't have been made up? My friend swears that she has had genuine readings and regularly visits to stay in contact with her mother's spirit.

It’s a comfort at a price though isn’t it? They prey on people at their darkest times and their most vulnerable. I’ve lost several close friends and if I thought for one moment that these con artists would allow me to communicate with them I’d see them like a shot but they would just be manipulating my grief for money.

Not one of them has ever agreed to have their “powers” put to the test in a scientific arena - that for me proves it’s bollocks.

Exactly this. No apparent medium has ever been able to prove their abilities under laboratory conditions. They would probably argue the environment would disturb the clairvoyant vibrations or other similar bullshit.

I was always very sceptical, non believer until I visited a medium may years ago.

I was grieving the loss of my baby boy and wasn't coping. A friend of mine had a reading with this lady and she was blown away.
She said I should go and I reluctantly agreed. I walked into this lady's home and felt at ease. She didn't know anything about me but everything she said was 100% accurate. She described how my son died, (infection) everything about his death and details no-one would know unless you were either me, my DH or consultant at the hospital.
She then said I was pregnant with another boy and born the following year in August. (This was November). I didn't believe her as it was very early days and i was not showing. (I was pregnant but only around a couple of weeks) my other little lad was born and we were lucky to bring him home the following August.
She knew how my FIL died. Unexpected and very sudden. The meeting was over 2 hours and she hardly charged me anything. The one thing she gave me was peace. I was devastated but she made me see how much I will always miss and love my son, he wasn't coming home but I still had a life to live. I changed for the better and never sweat about the small stuff. I have 3 DC's now and I always think of this lady.

A niece has had some amazing ‘readings’ from someone she knows, who incidentally doesn’t charge. Among others she was told things about a great aunt who’d lived hundreds of miles away and had fairly recently died.

Among other things there were some very specific facts about the woman when she was close to death, which niece hadn’t a clue about. But she checked later with her DM, who was there, and confirmed them.
They weren’t things that anyone could make a random guess about.

But I repeat, this person doesn’t charge.

A lassie I did my social work training with worked as a medium before doing her sw training ( yeah, I know - ethical person eh?) and told me how they did the cold readings. It's pretty despicable stuff- preying on those grieving.

Oh, I don't know - it's got to be pretty useful to be able to see straight through somebody who says of course there isn't anything to worry about, the child is just a bit clumsy and gets some funny ideas from time to time, they're a completely respectable, professional family.

Genuineweddingone · 24/02/2024 11:10

Years ago I went to one as my sister and mum had told me they were brilliant. I walked in sceptical and walked out knowing its shite. This woman is well known and a long waiting list. Her first thing to say to me was that she was so sorry for my loss - I asked which one because at the time I was in my 30's and lots of people had died. She said on my recent stillborn baby. My then thriving and healthy 3 month old baby was in the car with my mum at the time. This woman tried to convince me I had had a stillborn and I was freaked for months afterwards.

I think there's something in it....
My friend and I, on the spur of the moment, decided to go to a spiritualist event that was being held at a local hotel. ...to be clear, not pre planned or booked....we just turned up. There were various things to see and sessions to sit in on. I decided there and then...again not pre booked, no name or details pre given, to have a consult with a medium. She took my watch to hold and started to tell me she had someone from the other side who had come through.....the conversation went like this:-
Medium :- I have Edith here with me, who is Edith?
Me:- That's my Nan (she'd died 10 years previous)
Medium:- Edith says to say hello to Alice and to tell her she loves her very much. Who is Alice?
Me:- That's my mum!! 😲

So my Nan came through to say hello to her daughter, my mum.
When I told DH he said it was a set up and all researched....impossible as it wasn't pre booked and no names exchanged. It could have been correct a guess at names....but whay are the odds??!! That was 30 years ago and it still gives me shivers and warms my heart in equal measures!!

It’s a con. A smart reading/profiling and an ability to hone in on vulnerabilities. I went to my first last weekend with a load of friends. (Not my choice but someone arranged it). A number were shocked at the detail and accuracy. I noticed she tried very similar details with me, but I’m culturally from a very different background to all my friends. She was so off for me but had profiled correctly for the others. She tried on me the same starting points as had worked with the others. Then she rapidly flicked through similar but different prompts waiting to hit on something. I was embarrassed so acknowledged something vaguely and she went to town on it with generic points that couldn’t be disproved ‘you need to speak to your family about that. Someone very close to you has unresolved issues around it. Be careful they are in a bad way but you’ll recognise it when you see it’.

its a game, sorry.

Sadly I think this is true. I also think that some are well meaning. I’ve had this, where they’ve mis judged your demographic and say stuff that just doesn’t fit.

Im in professional senior job, but look young for my age and quite scruffy when off duty. I’m also from wc background. I had one medium talking about a friend who drives a taxi, various other links to people in unskilled jobs. Said I was entitled to benefits that I didn’t realise (because I was a single mum- had told her this). I’m not being snobby but I just don’t know anyone in those roles as my friends are all Uni/ work/ NCT/ etc. there’s also no way I’m entitled to any benefits!

It's kind of boring how so many people on mumsnet are so certain about all the mysteries of the world. I don't know what remains to surprise them now that they have nothing left to learn.

I haven't a clue whether I believe in mediums or not, but it is a fun conversation and some strange things happen

I agree with this.
Yes it probably is a con 99% of the time, but I also think there's just so much things we still don't know enough about and it's extremely arrogant to think we do know everything already.

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/02/2024 12:35

Lots are in it for the money, others are well-meaning fruitcakes.

That’s not harsh enough.

Lots are fraudulently in it for the money, some are well-meaning fruitcakes, the rest are nasty fruitcakes.

I went to see Clinton Baptiste last night. Highly recommend.

crumbledog · 24/02/2024 13:29

If it brings comfort to people then I don’t see how it’s any different to using religion to get through grief. Everyone has different ways of coping and it’s not anyone else’s place to judge.

And what future event were you told about?

Clinton Baptiste is a spoof psychic. Though that said, it's probably hard to tell the difference!

Ah I see. Never heard of them but I bet it's quite entertaining.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 24/02/2024 14:58

I think there is the 1) clever picking up cues, 2) talking to dead people, and 3) the 'gets messages' types. The first two are mostly clever BS, (although I do believe in ghosts), the third genuine.
For example, TV psychic (can't remember his name) told random taxi driver (correctly) that he was recently divorced - he had noticed a white band round the man's wedding finger where a ring had been.
But I was talking to a woman in a shop about 30 years ago and she suddenly started telling me stuff about me. She told me I was pg with twins, which I didn't know at the time. I was sceptical. When I asked her how she knew stuff like that, she said she just got ransom messages coming through like a radio tuned to receive signals.

This is no comparison at all unless you're being charged £100 to go and sit in church.

See this is interesting. But different. There's no communicating with the dead nor any seeing into the future involved (if you were already pregnant, that is). Some people and animals can pick up on illnesses and hormonal changes in others, so yes, they're "tuned in" to something. That something isn't woo, though.
When my pregnancy was announced, one of my pupils' mums said "Yes we thought you were... there was just something about you" 😧

Weescottishwummin2 · 24/02/2024 16:18

Years ago I went to someone , as I entered his room he looked puzzled and asked , "who or what is Victor " my husband was in residential training with his new guide dog Victor !!! There is no way he could have known that.

Well you could go to a spiritual church which doesn’t cost anything and most mediums are not charging £100 anyway.

People are told stuff. I would want to be asking my loved one all sorts, not just being told 'they are here and say hello'
Cruel people working on the gullible and vulnerable

I’m very sceptical.

But I went along at the last moment with a friend to see a medium in a theatre. I didn’t book and I’m not on socials.

Of all the people there the medium pointed at me! He said I had problems with my eyes. I didn’t really believe it but I got my eyes tested just to be safe.

Turns out my glasses aren’t strong enough.

Spooky.

😄🤦🏼‍♀️

I went to a group one. She picked me out saying things about poetry. I had been looking at a poetry book beforehand in the room. Suspect cameras or a plant feeding info.
