Went to see a medium

I went to see a medium yesterday for the first time. It was pure indulgence to see if there was anything in it. The medium did not hit on anything that resonated with me and I felt it was pure speculation. I'm curious now though... Has anyone here had a really accurate psychic or medium reading that simply couldn't have been made up? My friend swears that she has had genuine readings and regularly visits to stay in contact with her mother's spirit.

It's kind of boring how so many people on mumsnet are so certain about all the mysteries of the world. I don't know what remains to surprise them now that they have nothing left to learn.

I haven't a clue whether I believe in mediums or not, but it is a fun conversation and some strange things happen

And the un-strange thing is that money always changes hands. Lots of it. Hmm

As for the stuff that surprises the MNers you excoriate, it's everyday life: a pretty sky or sunset; a chance encounter with a friend, that sort of thing.

Lwrenn · 24/02/2024 05:52

I'm an atheist and think it's bollocks, so one day a friend of mine determined to change my mind bought me a reading, it was quite expensive.

Totally cold reading and he was vile, he hit the nail on the head quite often and loads of what he said came true, but all of it was just things any bellend could tell you, "you've lost someone named George? No! John? Not John...Edward? No? Was it Tony? No? Oh it's definitely a Peter". He told me I'd have a son and daughter.
He told me I was fat and should go to him for weightloss hypnotherapy.
(I was a size 12, cf!)
Everything that was specific, could have been specific to anyone.

At one point he was actually aggressive.
I resented giving him money, even if it wasn't mine.

Another friend went to him and he made her lie down so he could feel spirits over her. She's stunning and slim with big breasts, which may have been why she was asked to lie down and close her eyes.

Urgh creepy arsehole.

Untilitisnt · 24/02/2024 06:06

It's much easier these days; social media is a mine of info. Even if your sm is private, your friend's may not be, so you and sooooo much of your personal information remains plastered all over it
There's a common denominator in those who believe that some intermediary can commune with the dead and those who think a 29 years-old hunk has fallen in love with a 54 years-old grandmother of three based on an fb picture
If anyone could/should commune with the dead, it's a vicar/priest/bishop/pope, but you don't see them in the Mecca or the tugthumpers arms offering such services

As a PP said, a brain no longer works once the blood supply has gone.
The flesh is rotted or burned. Gone back to nothing.
How is this supposed to translate to not only think and talk.. But also see the future?! What utter bollocks.
.. and what do they do all day? Float around your house watching where you lost your watch so they can tell you later?
.. and how long do they stick around? Till they collect you on your death bed? Where do they go then? Etc, etc..

Saying all of this, I was hooked on Doris Stokes books as a teenager.
Was she ever exposed as a fraud? 🤔

It's just clever cold reading.

I'm not sure how she 'cold read' the fact that many years previously, when I was 16, I had a boyfriend who in later years (when I was no longer with him) died in a climbing accident 🤔 Especially as the only question she asked me through the entire session was my star sign.

Jewelanemone · 24/02/2024 06:35

She also didn't have any 'messages' from him, she was just aware that he had existed.

They are all charlatans that prey on the vulnerable and/or gullible.

I went to see someone who spoke about

a piece of unusual jewellery I didn’t have - it was stolen.

my child’s congenital heart condition, this became apparent two months later

it was an interesting reading but those two things stick out the most

she didn’t know my name as I didn’t book

i was refused a reading previously by someone else, the same day someone I knew died in a crash - I often wonder if that was why she refused to give me a reading, no one else was refused. We were at a function and she did readings for others without any issues

AceofPentacles · 24/02/2024 07:18

I never post on these usually as most MNers are so rude about others beliefs but

Yes I have had experiences no one could explain. I had a phone reading with one who said my estranged dad wanted to talk about my brother. I don't have a brother but I have a half brother I've never met (his son). Medium said 'dad says your brother was on the wrong side of the law and you should steer clear'.
One of the few conversations I'd ever had with my dad was when I was going to meet my half brother for the first time and he rang me at work to say 'don't meet him, he's just got out of prison for armed robbery'.

This was before SM and a pretty big coincidence.

ThisIsntThe80sPat · 24/02/2024 08:17

I'm always sceptical about this stuff but my auntie got me to go along one for a fun night. As soon as she stepped in the house, she said to my auntie someone inside had suffered a very significant loss recently - a spouse. It was my aunties friend in her early 40s who had lost her husband to cancer.

I went in still sceptical, not giving away details (she told us to only say yes or no anyway). She did say a bunch of things that were accurate (like someone had planted my grans favourite flowers in their garden in memory of her - my dad had told me he'd done this a week before the medium), but as I was finished and went to stand up, she hadn't mentioned the main thing in my life at that moment - our infertility and upcoming IVF. We had had a MMC and had been TTC for 2 and a half years with nothing, turns out DH had fertility issues. So icsi was our next step and only way to conceive.
Anyway, I stood up to leave, said thanks and turned away and she just went "stop! Ivf... You're doing IVF soon for your first child." She then just smiled and said "this time next year your life will look completely different." A year later to the day, I had a 4 week old DS as a result of that icsi. She then said "I see four faces in your family". This was 4 and a half years ago. I now have two DS.
I'll never forget how accurate she was with that and feel like that was something very specific to guess🤷🏼‍♀️

I’m very sceptical.

But I went along at the last moment with a friend to see a medium in a theatre. I didn’t book and I’m not on socials.

Of all the people there the medium pointed at me! He said I had problems with my eyes. I didn’t really believe it but I got my eyes tested just to be safe.

Turns out my glasses aren’t strong enough.

Spooky.

I think this is juts a coincidence. 100 people could be told the same thing, it makes sense given how eyes work, that some of those hundred people will have some changes

Many people believe in a soul / spirit of a person that lives on though, don't they? Even when the body has gone. I often wish I could believe in this too, it must be so comforting.

Of course you can't communicate with the dead because they're fucking DEAD. Their brains have rotted away. They can't think, talk or send messages. How could they?

It's ridiculous enough to think you can communicate with them, but to believe that dead people can also see into the future!
Dear lord, how? At what point does critical thinking kick in to let you know that some things just aren't possible?

I actually find it quite depressing that grown adults can believe such nonsense.

The brain actually becomes liquified within a few days (I learned that on a Pathology course)

Our dd went to see one with her friend not longer after my mum died.
The friend had made the booking and had just said she will be bringing LJ.
LJ is what her friends call her. He told her she had a beautiful name not lj.
The psychic told her that grandma was looking out for her.
Dd asked which one as dh mum had died the year before.
He said 'vina' but 'fre' is in the room.
My mums name was Vina.

I had a gypsy come into work once selling heather, and she gravitated towards me. I was politely trying to get rid of her and I swear to god she looked right into my very soul. She told me things that few people know, and I was horribly unnerved for days afterwards. It wasn't a remotely positive or calming experience for me, and I think some of these people are incredibly dangerous. I appreciate that some may find comfort in it but I really didn't. I would add that when my Dad died recently, I saw a counsellor via his hospice who was incredibly helpful and on our last session, she told me she could feel my grief as I walked into the room. Something about carrying it on my face. I wonder if that's what some people prey on?

Mn is very much against mediums on the whole. For many though it’s a comfort and brings them peace,

for some they have different gods and other mediums bring similar

as long as it not addictive or take over your life I can’t see the issue

Most of Mumsnet dislikes the unexplained so the majority of responses will be its a con.

I’ve known one or two who are genuine but they are a rarity. Most of the pros are for entertainment purposes only.

Notheninkynonk · 24/02/2024 10:34

Mediums are charlatans who prey on vulnerable individuals for money. Despicable individuals.

Shortandfat · 24/02/2024 10:36

When newly married but not yet TTC we met a friend of a friend in the pub and he claimed to be a bit psychic. I said I had had a dream that I wondered if it was a bit psychic, in it my dh's best friend (who had died about a year before) had come back, I told him we would name our first fob after him, and he (dead friend) told me I would have 2 daughters and so would not do this.

Friend of a friend said "Oh no. There's a baby quite close, and it's a boy. January 20th."

Never saw friend of friend other than that one night in the pub.

I found out I was pregnant a year or so later on 21 January. It was a boy.

Then an online friend would always announce her babies' sex very very early. She said she just knew. After having twins she said "I am pregnant again. I just feel one, it's a girl this time" - and 8.5 months later her singleton daughter was born. At the time I had 2 sons and when I asked, she said "I see you with a daughter". I then had a 3rd son and wrote what she said off... But got accidentally pregnant at 40 and had a girl.

Most of the "mysteries" of the world are explainable by science.

I personally think science is so infinitely amazing, so full of possibility, that it totally baffles me how people who set store by it are so often told it they are "close minded".

It’s a comfort at a price though isn’t it? They prey on people at their darkest times and their most vulnerable. I’ve lost several close friends and if I thought for one moment that these con artists would allow me to communicate with them I’d see them like a shot but they would just be manipulating my grief for money.

Not one of them has ever agreed to have their “powers” put to the test in a scientific arena - that for me proves it’s bollocks.

The Spiritulist Church is the best place to go.
No payment.. all genuine.
Even if you don't get a message it's uplifting to hear of others.
We had a Spiritualist funeral for my mum.. the minister of the Spiritualist Church lead the service.
I too am a Spiritualist ( non practicing at the moment) but in the past l have been called upon to help the local police ( yes they do use them).. and my help lead them to what they wanted.
