Went to see a medium

I went to see a medium yesterday for the first time. It was pure indulgence to see if there was anything in it. The medium did not hit on anything that resonated with me and I felt it was pure speculation. I'm curious now though... Has anyone here had a really accurate psychic or medium reading that simply couldn't have been made up? My friend swears that she has had genuine readings and regularly visits to stay in contact with her mother's spirit.

My mum had one a few months back and now it's freaked every one out. My mum messaged her on a fake account for a reading so she couldn't get none of mums details.
She told my mum about my aunt who had died, who before she died.
Had her front teeth smashed out and lip sliced off by her abusive bf and it was done with a shower pole in the bathroom. It was never reported so bizarre how she knew that.

She told my mum one of her daughters would find out they was pregnant within the month. My sisters are 10 & 11 so was only going to be me, except im on contraception and hasn't failed so far.. until it did. Im now due in 3 months time.

She said my mum was going to be moving soon and it will be near a pond and it will happen within 4 days.
Mums been waiting to move for 18 months and was told she would be out by July. She got a call last Wednesday and was told she has to sign and be in by Sunday. The road she lives on now is called ....Pond.
She also told mum that one of her daughters mental health is draining so keep an eye, and a week later my 11 year old sister was sectioned after an episode.
Freaked me out even typing this.
Just so so weird. Never believed in it but it just is really weird. You only give yes or no answers either to questions asked so no way to harvest info.

I went to a clair voyant who has worked in my city for about 40 years. This was many years ago before SM existed. Neither am I famous or notable in any way. I hadn't booked and I didn't even give her my name.

She told me that I would receive half of an inheritance. At the time I had no prospects of any inheritance. My widowed mother was skint living in an HA flat and I have no siblings or extended family. My DH's divorced parents owned their own modest homes but were only in their late fifties and perfectly healthy. Within a month my MIL had died quite suddenly with no warning or prior symptoms. DH had one sibling and they both inherited half of their mother's house.

She also told me I would attend the Royal Garden Party. Now, if you knew me this would be the stuff of pure fantasy but long story short I did indeed go to the RGP 5 months later. No-one was more surprised than me.

She told me a young King Charles Cavalier spaniel would be put to sleep. This was tragically true around 4 months later. Ddog had previously been very healthy.

She told me that someone close would go to live and work in Denmark. Nobody I knew, including me, had the remotest connection with Denmark or had even been there. To my utter amazement my BIL suddenly announced his intention to move to Denmark where he'd been offered a good job and accommodation completely out of the blue.

I had always put clair voyancy possibly down to a form of mind reading or astute guessing but this woman told me things that did happen in the future. These were very far from random things either. So what's the answer?

SomersetTart · 24/02/2024 18:39

Twenty years ago I went to a clairvoyant with a friend just for a bit of fun really. We were on holiday and it was totally unplanned.

My friend (whose idea it was) came out saying it was all generic nonsense. I went in afterwards and had my mind blown. The woman didn't ask me any questions just straight out started talking to me about a bloody awful problem I was having in my life. She told me names and repeated conversations word for word that I'd never shared with anyone. She described a person in minute detail and mentioned actions, dates and events accurately. Every single thing she said was spot on straight off, no imming and amming or fishing around....it was like she was reading it from a diary I'd never written. It was all about a situation in my life I'd not been able to discuss with a soul and just hearing another person saying it was such a comfort to me.

As I got up to leave she said that I wasn't to worry, I would be ok as my aunt whom she named and described right down to her skin colouring (unlike mine), distinctive scent and very unusual and old fashioned hairstyle was in the room with me and would always take care of me. My aunt was exactly as described and was much loved by me. She'd sadly died when I was a teenager several years previously.

I don't and didn't believe in any woo but this incident is as sharp, true and real to me as the room I'm sitting in now. I've never been to another woo type person or event as I don't need to. Once was enough.

After my first encounter with a psychic I went to another gathering. This time the clairvoyant heard the lottery numbers for the next Saturday draw loud and clear. I was so excited!

After not a single one of his predicted numbers came up I rang him up to complain.

He explained that he’d got psychic crossed-wires with a dead person’s spirit who was giving out her daughter’s suitcase lock combination.

I was so relieved! I thought he might have been a fraud!

Ah I see. Never heard of them but I bet it's quite entertaining

He's got a huge tour on this year. Not laughed so much in ages. You can get the flavour by watching him on Phoenix nights on you tube. It's not for everyone, as he says Smile

I tried it once. The medium said to me that she needed to say a specific word to me but couldn't explain why. That specific word was actually the name of the block I lived in at the time. She couldn't have known this.

The Spiritulist Church is the best place to go.
No payment.. all genuine.
Even if you don't get a message it's uplifting to hear of others.
We had a Spiritualist funeral for my mum.. the minister of the Spiritualist Church lead the service.
I too am a Spiritualist ( non practicing at the moment) but in the past l have been called upon to help the local police ( yes they do use them).. and my help lead them to what they wanted.

Sure your psychic help led the police to solve a crime. And obviously the fuzz aren’t ever, ever going to admit that they rely on the local woo-merchant’s ‘feelings’ rather than detective work.

Lollypop701 · 24/02/2024 20:54

problem is there are a few who can and many who cannot… the few get bad press. Think they might be grateful

Actually it's the many who cannot which is all of them who get the bad press.

Oh, that’s jogged my memory. There was a third time I saw a psychic. This one was at a neighbourhood meeting with local police after a spate of muggings in the area. Everyone was very on edge.

Anyway, at one point a woman stood up and said that she was getting ‘energy messages’ from her spirit guide. The spirit guide (who was an ancient Egyptian priestess, IIRC) was telling her that the offenders were young men and the police should look out for villains of this description.

Just the next day the police caught three people trying to mug a bloke who’d used a cashpoint. The muggers were, each of them, male and young. Every single one of them!

I’m still a sceptic. But it does make you think.

A woman once stopped me in the street and said "I'm sorry, I've got your grandad [name] here, he's very insistent that I tell you he's very proud of you and to congratulate (sister's name) on the twins."

Never seen the woman before in my life, both names correct, sister had just had twins. I was too flabbergasted to say anything and she just walked off.

I'm 99% sure it's bullshit but I still sometimes go along to the medium nights. One local to us is always raved about, she books the venue and you buy the tickets directly from her on Facebook and that's where she's getting her info. It always baffles me aswell that there's always a message about something really mundane, my Granny died 25 years ago if the first thing she wanted to talk about was my new carpets I'd be more than miffed!

swayingpalmtree · 25/02/2024 08:01

It's one big con. Most people only go and see mediums if they have lost someone (sure, not all, but thats the entire point for most people) and with clever cold reading and watching facial micro expressions you can easily get it right. I can cold read people after working in psych for over a decade - you can instantly tell when you've hit on a raw spot by body language.

Also, most people give their names to book and people forget how much info is available on SM these days. Darren Brown "guesses" a lot of things which seem to be magic but he has been very transparent about how easy it is if you know how to do it.

I went to see Clinton Baptiste last night. Highly recommend.

I looked up the Clinton Baptiste tour ( RollerCoaster)
He's a busy lad !

Told DH and we've booked to see him when he's in our neck of the woods .

Another ‘busy one’, Sally Morgan , suddenly took all Irish slots off her schedule years ago, when two people who’d been sitting in the back row of the stalls at one of her Dublin shows phoned a radio phone-in programme to say they’d heard voices saying things in a room adjacent to the auditorium (an internal window was open) which Sally then said a beat later on stage, suggesting she was being relayed information.

A journalist who attended a subsequent date in the UK then pointed out that on the merchandise table, you can leave a ‘love letter’ for Sally, asking a question you would like answered in the show, and that it would be perfectly possible to produce that information and use it as if the ‘spirits’ told you.

I’ve been to a few, some are pathetically obviously making shit up…. But I do believe after a few incidents including one saying “I’ve been sent an image from your grandmother, you and her playing one of those piano things with the roll in it” - he didn’t even know what it was called, yet playing the pianola with my grandmother whom I was very close to, was my favourite thing. So how the hell could he make that up? I then realised it was also her birthday. However he was a bit off the mark with some other things… but apparently I’m going to end up with some bloke called Chris. But was also meant to have a boy baby with my ex, so…..

CarrieMoonbeams · 25/02/2024 10:42

I've been to 5 in total, 3 of them were private readings.

The other 2 were stage shows (John Edward and Derek Acorah), both were so disappointing, I was cringing. To someone in their 50s it was "oh there's an older lady here with grey hair. She's saying she's your mum. No? Oh sorry, no I didn't say she's your mum, I said she felt like a mother figure to you." Or, to a woman in her 20s "I see a little baby here in spirit. He's saying he's with his grandad. No, oh sorry, it's your grandad. Sorry, great grandad" etc etc. We only stayed out of morbid fascination.

However...out of the three private readings I've had, 2 were fantastic, the other was ridiculous. Looking back now, I see that the first one was actually an expert in cold reading, and I was very young so didn't realise. And, to be fair, this was in the mid 1980s when these things weren't so well known about.

The one that was accurate though was absolutely incredible. He told me things about a late family member that I didn't know as I was a child when he died, but described him perfectly (including a disability that he had and the cause of his tragic death). I was able to verify all of those later. It's a bit outing to explain but this relative was a hugely important to me, he was a little oasis and calm and kindness in my otherwise horrible childhood. Also told me several things for the future that did come true in the following couple of years. Again, this was in the 1980s so no mobile phones, social medical etc. He only knew my first name, which isn't actually the name I go by as I use my middle name.

The other one was one of those ones in the village hall and it was so bad that I actually felt a bit sorry for the woman!
Her: "Your mum's got a red front door."
Me: "No, she hasn't"
Her: "Well she wants to paint it red then!"
Me: "No, she doesn't, she dislikes red."
Her: "Oh is that what it is, I'm seeing that she has a strong aversion to red!"
Me: 🤐

Why the hell she thought that displayed any psychic mediumship is beyond me, but it was an entertaining night out for a tenner.

I think that's the key though isn't it? IF you just view it as an entertaining night out that's fine, but it upsets me to think about the people who go looking for a message from their child or DH who'd died suddenly.

HoppingPavlova · 25/02/2024 11:02

I’m quite open to woo, but believe this is bollocks.

I saw a televised one that looked good. They supposedly channeled a child who blamed the parents for their death - the child did die in a boating accident while out with the parents. But then I thought it through rationally and you likely had to give a name/email/number when purchasing tickets for the show. They likely had researchers Googling everyone’s names to see if there were any easy wins, and I’m guessing a child’s death in such a situation would have probably been in some paper. What a horrible way to make money.

Pelicanlover · 25/02/2024 11:12

I have watched of these celebrity mediums on tv and they are crap! Much worse actually than the ones I’ve seen in real life.

although I think a lot of them are fake. I have seen some where the details have been so specific that there has to be something. But these experiences were all at a spiritualist church where they only expected a £3 entrance fee.

Wait a mo… one of these shysters told a grieving and bereft couple that their child blamed them for their death?

What a complete and utter cunt.

Yes. Went to a spiritualist church service once with friends. The medium mentioned a harmonica to my friend. Turns out she had bought one for her brother but she had not mentioned that to us.

Edited

But why would whoever the medium was supposed to be channelling mention something so inconsequential? If I was dead with psychic access to my loved ones' secrets or the future, I'd tell them something that would actually be useful.

Yes, and what is almost as grotesque is that the poster describing this televised horror said it ‘looked good’ and was an ‘easy win’ for the ‘medium’.
