Who is your favourite Gladiator?

We've been watching this every week with the kids and have been pleasantly surprised that it's something that we're all really enjoying, even our hard to drag away from his computer teen boy sits down willingly.

Our family favourite is definitely Legend, he's hilarious and we all hope that when he's competing that he'll be interviewed at the end. Loved the bit where he complained about the lights being in his eyes when he failed on the Wall.

From the women it's a toss-up between Sabre and Fury. Oh to have the confidence of Sabre! And Fury is just awesome and so fierce.

Yeah, Duel never seems like a fair fight for the men, they're always totally dwarfed by the Gladiator. It seems much more evenly matched for the women.

I feel like duel and powerball are the worst for the men. They are massively out-muscled and 3 glads v 2 contenders is unfair. With the wall and the edge there's more speed/agility as opposed to sheer muscle.

It's always been like it though - shadow beat the crap out of all the male contestants in 1990s duel!

noblegiraffe · 24/03/2024 21:54

Whenever Bionic comes on screen we yell 'Who are you??' as a result of his early absence. Possibly a bit unfair as he has been on loads since then.

Yes, not sure about this as you end up with 2 of them on 1 contender while the other gets an easier ride.

I recommend watching shadow on duel on YouTube, absolutely fascinating!

I had a major crush on him back in the day and would do again if he reappeared. Sadly he won't, he has undergone a considerable demise in recent years.. Shame really.. Oh well Giant and Bionic it is! lol :)

Fury for me, but my little girl (5) is absolutely obsessed with Athena - apparently she's going to be calling her first born daughter Athena!

I know it's just a TV show, and just meant to be a bit of fun, but I can't explain how much I love sitting down with my little girl, and watching some big, strong women being absolutely awesome, and being loudly celebrated for it. It's a pity there isn't a bit more body diversity amongst the male gladiators, though- they could have had at least a couple of regular-human-sized ones.

Aww bless her....Such a shame they grow up! lol.. Yes agree those woman are awesome. I actually felt intimidated seeing Diamond stare through her helmet at her opponent in a recent episode. I think I'd have jumped off my podium before she hit me! Yes clear disparity between the massive hunky male glads and their male contenders in this series.. Even more so than the 90s and Sky series.' It makes the female contests often a lot closer than the male ones. With that said I wouldn't want to see normal sized male gladiators. I know I speak for many by stating that one of the huge attraction aspects of the show is the chance to enjoy seeing huge massive muscled hunks doing battle in their shiny lycra cozzies! I know I'm far from alone in that viewpoint! Skinnier, less bulky gladiators.. No thanks! lol :)

I'm one of many who takes delight in seeing him every week now. He's especially amazing at duel! How spectacular does he look at 6'06"filling that shiny lycra cozzie?! I tend to watch the show alone or with my bezzie . I won't say on this platform what I shout as he appears on my telly.!! lol...Now..Dilemma, Bionic or Giant or Phantom or Nitro..or Apollo... ..Mmmm Bionic just edges it for me currently. :)

Love Gladiators! Been telling the DDs how my little brother and I used to reenact Duel on the sofa hitting each other with cushions! Does anyone remember that contender who was so good they made her a gladiator? Eunice I think she was called.

In the new series we all love Legend, so funny and Nitro is such a cheeky chappy. Oh and Steel for that smile. Fury is hands down winner out of the ladies. I cannot even watch when Giant comes on screen. He’s super scary and I find his smile really sinister.

I love it too as do my friends and grown and flown DDs! I actually like Giant, Not offended by his Turkey teeth smile at all! My bezzie has a huge crush on him! lol. I personally prefer Nitro (Big pecs) and Bionic (He is huge)! My only critique is that like the vast majority I'd like the presenters to be replaced. Nothing against B&B but they clearly belong elsewhere and it's wrong there's no female presenter..That aside it's a great show. Missed those massive hunks in tight shiny lycra cozzies for far too many years! Totally delighted hearing the new series is in the planning! lol ! :)

ClaudiaWinklepanda · 25/03/2024 16:48

I'm concerned that 'glads' has made an appearance on this thread. Every time the Walshes say it we all banter the telly, saying that nobody calls them that and it will never catch on. Like those ads about Creme Eggs on toast or the many ways in which nobody eats Weetabix.

You're proving me wrong, and I hate that. <sulky Viper face>

Piggywaspushed · 25/03/2024 17:45

They said 'glads' back in the day!

The foam hands are their 'glad hands'!

I love having a family show to watch with my DC that we all enjoy.

I Cant stand the walshes though, such old fashioned cheese. I would swap them for Alex Scott and another experienced presenter, i would also add Nicola Adams as a secondary presenter - maybe interviewing the gladiators. I dont think she has much presenting experience but I find her on camera quite sincere, charming and funny and I think her bantering with the contestants post game could be quite cute.

I think i have applied to get tickets to watch the filming of s2. I heard it will be this summer.

Totally agree. Seems bizarre there was no female representation presenter wise, especially after the concept of bringing it back was by Kate Phillips at the BBC who had a virtually all female team who planned this and selected the gladiators and the Hungry Bear film company etc.. I saw the original American version years ago when a 3rd female presenter would actually interview/stay with the ''WAGS" etc in audience during some events, usually offering sarcastic but humorous commiserations afterwards! Yep, nothing against the Walshes but they don't belong here..I don't watch too much telly but BW seems to be everywhere, it's getting tedious! In short, they're the weakest link of a great show. Nowhere near the levels of John and Ulrika in the originals, or Kirsty Gallacher in the Sky series,'
Yes 2nd series being recorded in June I think. My bezzie went to the 1st one for a day and loved it.. Very tempted to tag along! There are also rumours of extra episodes around Christmas including celeb ones.. All very interesting lol:)

GemmaC50 · 26/03/2024 13:31

@ThreeRingCircus Agree with your description of Apollo (no Greek God) although he clearly has a fair share of admirers on here!, but defo not regarding Bionic. Lordy he's adorable, what a good looking big hunk?! That said, I'm getting to an age in life where they all look baby faced! lol :)

Yes, not sure about this as you end up with 2 of them on 1 contender while the other gets an easier ride.

Get your point..Am, thinking it's because a giant hulky glad can't charge and skip around a powerball court in the same way as a sprightly athletic contender can. Particularly evident in the men's PB event where the glads are ofter 20stone of solid muscle. No way they're going to catch an 11 odd stone contender if it were just one vs one.. The 3rd glad means the contenders have to be far more cunning and also creates more heavy tackling opportunities for the glads themselves..Which is the main reason we enjoy this event...right? :)

GemmaC50 · 26/03/2024 13:46

@JanewaysBun I might add she says that seeing the likes of Bionic, Giant, Nitro etc on occasion from close quarters is infinitely more spectacular than seeing them through a TV screen so I'm defo tempted to take that short day trip to Sheffield! A lot goes on that isn't shown on screen as there's lots of down time between setting up events and the Glads take turns to entertain the audience :)

noblegiraffe · 26/03/2024 13:51

The old fashioned cheese works, though, my kids love it.

Having sporty presenters who could probably have a go at some of the events themselves would change the dynamic The names! The costumes! The music! It’s not a show that can take itself seriously, and neither do the presenters.

I’m glad it’s not Ant and Dec though.

I like Alex Scott but I find her really wooden. Nicola Adams is lovely but not a natural presenter. I wouldn't be surprised if Adams and Jill Scott turn up as slebs!

I’m not sure about that. Nitro and Fire are ridiculously quick. Not all of the Glads are bulky walls although those that are have to be almost impenetrable.

I find Legend amusing, the most convincing baddie as Viper in his attempt to mimic the Wolf of old fails every time and looks like a complete dick acting that way, not even convincing imo. Neither are amongst the bigger sexier gladiators . Love Nitro's polite sporting mannerisms, love his big bouncing pecs even more! I forgot to name Phantom amongst my faves, he's pretty luscious yep! lol :)

vincettenoir · 26/03/2024 21:17

I have a soft spot for Legend but he’s not much of a convincing baddie. He used to have a YouTube channel called Mattdoesfitness all about him and his family and his bulking regime. He is clearly a pretty sweet guy, who loves spending time with his two sons.
