I had no idea he was ill. Condolences to his family.

The BBC orchestra playing the theme tune was very moving and Vernon always sounds lovely and genuine. Then we pass on to Jeremy Vine- I'm sorry but he always comes across as so insincere- the fake sobbing, but not missing a beat of the show! Really? Have turned him off! I can't stand him!

the80sweregreat · 14/02/2024 13:28

Liz Kershaw today in the daily mail has blasted the bbc for dumping Steve a few years ago ( her words)
I know he still did the love songs and started to do the Saturday pick of the pops , but he must have felt bad. I know it happens in all walks of life , but it's never nice after so long in one job and having to get the listeners on board

The Daily Mail would see the whole of the BBC shut down. People move jobs. They had to try something new. Otherwise no younger people would ever get the chance until someone died and left a gap. The Radio 2 line up went 'Middle aged White man, Middle aged White man, Middle aged White man... all the way through to 7pm. I mean, shame they went with Scott Mills, who's like a cut price not nearly as good Steve Wright, but there you go.

Argh, the BBC Concert Orchestra just played the theme to his show.....😞☹️😥

They played it at the start of Scott mills and because of he time that really cracked me up

RampantIvy · 14/02/2024 14:38

I couldn't have said it better myself @BeaRF75.

LindorDoubleChoc · 14/02/2024 14:52

How can I listen to the BBC concert orchestra playing his theme tune? Was it at the end of Vernon's show today? If anyone can link it, I'd be very grateful Flowers.

It's right at the very end, just before noon.

@LindorDoubleChoc it's on Instagram.

I think that a bit unfair on Jeremy, even though I agree he does come across at times as insincere. They were colleagues for over 20 years. I don't think Steve would have had the guy doing impressions of Jeremy on his show if they weren't genuinely really good friends. He is also a professional news journalist, whereas the rest of them are radio presenters, so he's trained to a different standard when dealing with upsetting news.

People/posts seem to be hinting at suicide :(

Daisypod · 14/02/2024 15:54

There really is no need to post such ghoulish stuff @YeahBrackie
What part of the family requesting privacy at this time is so hard to understand?

Poor Scott Mills, he’s just said he was really nervous about coming on today. I know people compare him to Steve and I think that’s a bit unfair, they’re totally different people from different genres and backgrounds. They’re not going to be the same and the point of R2 changing it up was because they wanted to go in a different direction. Obviously we all love and miss Steve because he’d been a part of our lives for so long. He was apparently very supportive of Scott.

There is something special about the intimacy of radio. I've been listening to Steve Wright, on and off, since the Radio 1 days 40 years ago. There is also a huge collective memory for our generation - we all listened to Radio 1 and watched TOTP. That was how we got our music. Hence the huge reaction to this sad news. I'm not so sure it's the same for today's teens - everything is so much more fragmented with streaming etc. In 30/40 years' time, I don't think they'll have the same kind of memories of radio DJs.
But radio is still my favourite medium - always on in the house and much better than TV!

Yes I agree.
The radio (Radio 2) is on here pretty much all the time though admittedly not in the afternoons anymore since Steve left.
I still miss Simon Mayo in the evening though Sara is okay.
I hope they ask Simon to do a slot.

Scott Mills, I hate to break it to you, is a middle aged white man. As is Vernon Kay.

Well, to be fair I thought the same…just going by the fact it’s being called an ‘incident’ his family will have seen that reported too.

Oh get off your high horse. I'm only posting what I'm hearing. The family statement posted "regret". What else is everyone supposed to think? 🙄

The family statement posted about regret and an incident. I'm hoping he wasn't suicidal. He seemed so happy last weekend. Hate to think of anyone suffering :(

Willmafrockfit · 14/02/2024 17:47

an incident would be a heart attack.

Edited

Yes I'm talking generally if no one ever left no one would have a chance. At least there are some women now and Scott snd Vernon are 20 years younger than Ken and Steve.

Daisypod · 14/02/2024 18:00

@YeahBrackie you hate to think of anyone hurting yet you spread malicious rumours about how someone's loved one has died 🙄

cavalier · 14/02/2024 20:41

Ridiculous24 · 13/02/2024 17:52

What will we do on Sunday mornings? 😢

😢😢💔💔💔💔

Cocolapew · 14/02/2024 20:56

So many of his colleagues seem genuinely upset and all have such lovely words for him. As pp said I hope he knew how loved he was.

LlynTegid · 14/02/2024 21:32

@YeahBrackie I expect there may be an inquest, and until then, I think we should not repeat speculation.

I was not someone who listened to his shows, though even so have thoughts for his family and friends as they mourn.
