I had no idea he was ill. Condolences to his family.

in my head it was a given he’d always be around. It’s so sad to think no more.

thoughts with friends and family

Friedchickenrocks · 13/02/2024 20:20

Such a shock. I don't think he was ill so would guess at fatal heart attack.

A broadcasting legend. 40+ years on afternoon on Radios 1 and 2.

Aquarius1234 · 13/02/2024 20:20

I watched his interview outside Radio 2 studios was it a year or two ago now?
He seemed kinda ok with being told to step down but also didn't seem happy either.
Saying going from working 6 days a week to 2. 5 days.
Perhaps he should have left altogether and tried something new.

Sara Cox is so gutted

I know - she did an amazing job holding it together. Jo Whiley too. And the Bobster 😥

He wasn't pulled from the BBC, he was still doing Sunday Love Songs and has recently taken over Pick of the Pops and was advertising another one off special show.

He had retired from his afternoon show and he made it clear it was his choice.

It wasn't his choice. BBC Radio boss Helen Thomas decided she "wanted a change in the afternoons" He wasn't bitter and had only good things to say about the BBC.

RabbitsRock · 13/02/2024 20:25

I feel really sad about this - I grew up with “Steve Wright In The Afternoon”.

NotMyDayJob · 13/02/2024 20:25

I've listened to Radio Two for over 20 years, a friend and I used to listen where we were, work etc and email each other.

I was listening to the 5pm news when it was breaking news on radio 2. Credit to the news presenter and poor Sara and Bobbi, I was quite touched at how genuine they sounded.

JoanThursday1972 · 13/02/2024 20:28

He was the first one to do the zoo format I think. Remember Ask Elvis, the bloke that did the allotments, Barry from Watford, the Old Woman, Mr Angry.

CrushingOnRubies · 13/02/2024 19:55

I really hope radio 2 plays the closing music to his afternoon show in full at some point. I love that piece of music

Yes it's so familiar and comforting.
RIP Steve

tachetastic · 13/02/2024 20:29

How terribly sad. Steve Wright was part of my afternoon drive and Sunday mornings for as long as I can remember, and since October I had really enjoyed him taking over the Saturday afternoon Pick of the Pops from Paul Gambuccini.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

You need to ask for this to be deleted. There is no evidence it's lung cancer and family did not release it in their statement.

It's either not true (probably) or not been officially released.

ScribblingPixie · 13/02/2024 20:40

I used to listen to him at night on Radio Luxembourg in the late 1970s. He was so sweet, funny and relatable. I feel very sad to have followed his career right through to the end.

tttigress · 13/02/2024 20:40

I loved him in the late 80s and 90s, especially the characters, not many DJs even tried to do sketches.

I must admit I don't really listen to the radio anymore, unless I catch 5 minutes in the car, I guess times change, amazing that he used to get many millions of listeners on the hayday of radio 1.

JoanThursday1972 · 13/02/2024 20:18

I don't think he was. The family said it was a very sudden death. The poor bloke probably had a heart attack.

Paul Gambaccini on 5 luve said he was sending him emails this morning about a project, so it must have been very sudden.

Craftycorvid · 13/02/2024 20:45

His afternoon show on Radio one helped me through a lonely and difficult adolescence. I feel very sad he’s passed.

God yes I was in the car when Sara came on as I usually do and it was all jokey then by the time I'd got out of the car, did some stuff and put the radio back on it had completely changed. Credit to Sara and the Bobster for holding it together.

Just listened to Sara's link after the news broke and what she said was beautiful. You could tell she meant every word

ProcrastinationCentral · 13/02/2024 21:08

What a complete shock- and honestly, how saddened I am. I suppose its because I can't remember a time he hasn't been on the radio. Being daft and reliably cheerful.
Didn't expect to find myself having a cry in the car this afternoon.

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2024 21:11

Sara's show is so upbeat and crazy usually and then she received such sad news
The traffic lady was so upset too
I think Sara was relived when she had to hand over to Jo Wiley tbh , it was so difficult for everyone today :(

piscofrisco · 13/02/2024 21:15

I've Listened to Sunday live songs forever. And my kids grew up with it (they used to complain then secretly grew to love it). We are sad to hear of Steve's death.

Panastasia · 13/02/2024 21:16

I’m sorry to hear this. I loved him when I was growing up.

Panastasia · 13/02/2024 21:18

I’m shocked. 69 is no age these days.

Goatymum · 13/02/2024 21:32

Really shocked. I listened to him as a teen and a student.

Orla75 · 13/02/2024 21:37

What a loss ! Rest in peace Steve Wright.

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 13/02/2024 21:44

Such a shock, I thought I'd misheard the news on the radio.

I normally have sport radio on in the car but me and my mum went to the nec 2 Sundays ago and so listened to Steve, haven't really had radio 2 on since most of the oldies left.
