I had no idea he was ill. Condolences to his family.

I must admit that any ' which celebs do you dislike' threads I often said SW because he sung over the end of the songs ! Dh liked him a lot so I did listen in , but I was never that keen on the format apart from the factoids bit. However, his show was different and he was clearly loved ( and the Sunday show) and I was really upset to hear he'd died and he did seem one of the good guys. He was such a huge star of radio.

howdyho · 14/02/2024 06:45

Only hit me this morning when I just heard Gary Numan 'Are Friends Electric' on Nikki Chapman Radio 2 saying it was one Steve Wright's favourite songs, brought back all my years growing up with him in the background.
RIP Steve 🌷🌟

I feel very sad about this news. Like many, I grew up listening to him. He was only on the radio on Sunday. I’ll miss Sunday Love Songs. He had such a recognisable voice.

Daisypod · 14/02/2024 07:35

Listening to Radio 2 and Nicky Chapman just cut off the end of Wichita lineman! The end of that song was the outtro to his programme and synonymous with him, I can't believe she did that.

Unfortunately a lot of people had a lot of bad words to say about him when he was still doing the afternoon show. Past it, embarrassing, overstayed his welcome. That sort of thing. It made me cross as I really loved his show and thought they didn't know what they were talking about - they're probably being sycophants now.

I was ine of the ones who thought they needed a change from Steve Wright in the Afternoon. I felt like I'd been listening to the same show since I was 12 snd it wasn't as good as it was, but I still listened. I regret that now as Scott Mills is so boring I dont listen at all, and take the opportunity to listen to a Radio 4 podcast, then switch back over to Sara.

the80sweregreat · 14/02/2024 08:40

I guess that after 12 years on the afternoon show it was a bit tired , but they always did move on with the presenters over time. I remember my mum being outraged that they changed from Jimmy young to Jeremy vine years ago and refused to listen ( she did in the end )
I don't mind Scott mills , but I admit he sounds bored a lot of the time as does Ritchie with Zoe ball. Considering what they earn on these shows they could show a bit of enthusiasm sometimes ! lol

TheAverageJoanne · 14/02/2024 08:40

I can't bear Sara Cox but I understand she did a fab job yesterday as it was during her show that the Steve sad news was broken.

I feel so weird about this news, so sad.

The afternoon show began much further back than 12 years. It was on Radio 2 from 1999.

the80sweregreat · 14/02/2024 08:44

I like Sara's show , but sometimes it is a bit crazy ! She seems a very happy person so hearing her so down yesterday was horrible
I did feel a bit sorry for her tbh
It was a shock

the80sweregreat · 14/02/2024 08:46

Gosh, over 20 years on radio 2.

the80sweregreat · 14/02/2024 08:46

Gosh, over 20 years on radio 2.

And for as long as I can remember on Radio 1. We used to listen to Rafio 2 at home, and then when I started getting the bus to and from school, I'd listen to him on my Walkman on the way home. That must have been in 1985 ish.

There is something special about the intimacy of radio. I've been listening to Steve Wright, on and off, since the Radio 1 days 40 years ago. There is also a huge collective memory for our generation - we all listened to Radio 1 and watched TOTP. That was how we got our music. Hence the huge reaction to this sad news. I'm not so sure it's the same for today's teens - everything is so much more fragmented with streaming etc. In 30/40 years' time, I don't think they'll have the same kind of memories of radio DJs.
But radio is still my favourite medium - always on in the house and much better than TV!

I was talking about this to a woman in the gym the other day! Everyone I know who was a kid in those days has the same music memories- the taping of the Charts on a Sunday, the Radio 1 roadshow etc.I can remember words to whole albums just from listening to them over and over again when I was young. My kids aren't really into music in the same way. I wonder if they will have the same anchoring in time when they listen to a song? Karma Chamelion takes me right back to my front room with my mum saying ' Is that a man or a woman? when we were watching TOTP. I also still have the radio on in my headphones all day when I'm working.

the80sweregreat · 14/02/2024 09:10

I loved the chart show on Sunday nights
Taping all the songs ! I had a few magnetic tapes of dodgy chart run downs.

donteatthedaisies0 · 14/02/2024 09:31

I remember so much about the radio in those days when I was growing up (70s & 80s ) My mother always had the radio on , and then at work . So I always listened to it until R1 decided their DJ's were all too old and got rid . I never really bothered again . I was a young mum by then in the early 90's .
I could be wrong but don't think radio has the same impact as it did back then with young people . I did like Gary Davies as well and used to listen to DLT on a Saturday too .

the80sweregreat · 14/02/2024 09:33

Radio is a great medium I think as your using your imagination and you can get on with things whilst your listening in! Music is great leveler I think

LoreleiG · 14/02/2024 10:16

23 years (not 12) in the afternoon slot at R2 - but he was on R1 for most of the 80s and early 90s in the afternoon too. I am not sure how old the jingle is but I am sure it was the same when he was on radio 1. Plus top of the pops!

I've got one somewhere with Steve Wright talking over the song!!

thelengthspeoplegoto · 14/02/2024 10:46

Such sad news. I missed him when he was pulled from his afternoon slot. He had been a part of my day for years.
I often hoped to meet him sometime, he seemed like such a genuinely good guy.
RIP Steve.

the80sweregreat · 14/02/2024 11:03

I admit that the singing and silliness over the end of the songs did drive me mad 😠
It was ' his thing ' though ..
His 'posse ' always seemed a happy bunch of people and enthusiastic, I do believe they loved their jobs on there

There really is.

The celebrity death that stirs me years later is Terry Wogan after years of starting the day with his gentle paternal voice and light humour. I was his Other Listener.
Ken Bruce evokes similar feelings gently chuntering along in my home each day.

I enjoyed Steve Wright in the afternoon. I have young memories of him in the car in his Radio 1 days and I enjoyed his daft energy through the afternoons on Radio 2. Scott Mills is dull, and I decided to follow Ken when he moved.

There's still a few shows like Sounds of the 80s that I listen to on BBC Sounds.

Radio at its best creates a sense of personal rapport which TV rarely makes. Radio tends to be more stable in a rapidly shifting industry.

It's a shock to lose such a distinctive DJ so full of life.

Willmafrockfit · 14/02/2024 11:43

I had tapes with him talking on the end!
Vernon

Played Elvis this morning which was emotional An American trilogy, ie glory glory hallelujah

Willmafrockfit · 14/02/2024 11:52

In fact I taped all around the world, Lisa Stanfield, who is a guest on Vernon today, and there was a crying baby dubbed on to the end!

Chocolatecoveredshitpig · 14/02/2024 12:01

Argh, the BBC Concert Orchestra just played the theme to his show.....😞☹️😥

Have to admit I filled up at that, and at Vernon's voice cracking, he was really struggling. Jeremy Vine sounded almost as distraught.

Riverlee · 14/02/2024 13:09

Jeremy Vines voice cracked up a few times.
