I had no idea he was ill. Condolences to his family.

Sara Cox is so gutted

LunaNorth · 13/02/2024 17:58

He didn’t half make me and my friends laugh in the 80s, with all his characters on Radio 1.

What a shame. I’m glad he worked on BBC radio until the end, though. He really seemed to love it.

So sad.. only 69.. I'm 65 so grew up listening to him.
Think it was sudden.
R.I.P Steve ❤️

I think they just said on the radio that he was working this morning so very sudden, I guess a heart attack

TrustPenguins · 13/02/2024 17:59

Wow, I'm shocked by this. So sad.

He wasn't pulled from the BBC, he was still doing Sunday Love Songs and has recently taken over Pick of the Pops and was advertising another one off special show.

He had retired from his afternoon show and he made it clear it was his choice.

Yes, I think that's how it went. Even if he was 'pulled', he really did do that slot for a very long time. There is always a need for change, and he still had a lot of shows on radio 2. You can't just not change just in case someone dies. I enjoyed him on Pick of the Pops and Sunday Love Songs, long after I had got bored of his afternoon show.

Sara Cox is so gutted

It's quite upsetting listening to Sara and Bobbi.

BarelyLiterate · 13/02/2024 18:02

That’s such sad news. 69 is no age these days.

I used to listen to his R1 show back in the day. It was often hilarious, and I really enjoyed it. My tastes may have moved on, and I can’t say I was a fan of his R2 show, but hearing his voice always reminded me of my youth. I believe he was quite an eccentric chap when not on the radio, and I hope his personal life was happy.

Condolences to his family.

gillybombilly · 13/02/2024 18:02

So sad to hear this news - it brings back memories from my youth listening to his afternoon show.

Characters like Mr. Angry and Mr and Mrs Sauna were so funny - The Steve Wright show was one we never missed.

Yes same here. I loved his radio 1 show when I was young. Although I got bored of it on radio 2, it reminded me of being a kid.

Topseyt123 · 13/02/2024 18:06

Such sad news. 😥. RIP Steve.

I used to love Steve Wright in the Afternoon when I was younger.

MumofSpud · 13/02/2024 18:06

Steve Wright in the Afternoon got me through my teen years in the 80s - I think I am right in that he was the pioneer of that radio style of the main DJ having a 'posse' in the background

He always sounded as if he loved what he did
Sad

Dexterrolledoffthesofa · 13/02/2024 18:07

He was like that big bowl of stew and dumplings you have after a freezing cold walk - a comfort and something to look forward to.
I used to love listening to him.
RIP.

Paul2023 · 13/02/2024 18:09

I’m sure on Sunday just gone he said something like , see you next Sunday, good bye. He did Steve Weight Sunday love songs didn’t he ?
Im quite surprised .

He was a constant in my radio listening life

NooNakedJacuzziness · 13/02/2024 18:10

Aw, my grandad always had him on and cracked up at Sid the Manager and the raving mad man. RIP

Sasqwatch · 13/02/2024 18:11

Very Sad indeed. Thanks for the memories Steve.

LakeTiticaca · 13/02/2024 18:11

Loved him in the 80s on radio 1.
He'd just taken over pick of the pops from Gambo. I try and listen every Saturday.
I'm gobsmacked

cakeorwine · 13/02/2024 18:15

Quite young really

Definitely a part of my childhood - and also on trips in the afternoon in the car.

LindorDoubleChoc · 13/02/2024 18:18

I'm really sad. Lord knows I've started some threads moaning about R2 over the years, but I never had a problem with Steve Wright. I was enormously annoyed when Scott Mills took over his show. SW was superb with his guests and did some great celebrity interviews.

I was genuinely happy that he got the Paul Gambaccini gig. Hell, I'm even someone who loved Sunday Love Songs.

RIP Steve. As someone who has recently lost a parent aged 92, 69 seems so young. And I feel sorry for Sarah Cox who is having to steer the show through the news.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 13/02/2024 18:22

End of an era. I wasn't even a fan really, but he's been a constant and his shows have been memorable. He pioneered the US zoo style of radio programme in the UK.

oh Bobbi was also devastated

Eachpeachpears · 13/02/2024 18:24

I've listened to Sunday love songs when traveling to my grandparents weekly, and as an adult while I've driven to my parents on a Sunday. I'm heartbroken at this.
I missed factoids as it was but was loving him on pick of the pops and love songs as always. Heartbroken for his family, friends and colleagues. Hoping there is plenty of music for him while he rests in heaven

Willmafrockfit · 13/02/2024 18:25

i did miss him in the afternoon, not getting on with Mills and his music at all

LindorDoubleChoc · 13/02/2024 18:26

He had retired from his afternoon show and he made it clear it was his choice.

Recollations may vary on this.

soupfiend · 13/02/2024 18:26

I like Steve Wright, he always seems to get slagged off but I liked his show
