I had no idea he was ill. Condolences to his family.

It's sad, he's not much older than my Dad so it's a bit of a reminder that time is precious. Sara did really well, it doesn't sound like she had long at all to prepare herself.

Onacuctustree · 13/02/2024 21:49

Listening to Sara this evening was hard. Her and Bobbie were in bits. He must have been a nice man. He came across as such, but you never know with media people.
I used to hear him on the school bus home. Then in the afternoons when cooking tea for children.
Love songs was not my cup of tea.. but he did it well.

Gutted for him. Was awful when he had to leave his afternoon show, he’d had it for so long and I absolutely loved it. Can’t believe he’s gone. Was loving his new Pick of the Pops show too. He was really making it his own. Was lovely to think he might be presenting that for a few more years and now that’s it, he’s gone.

Much love and respect to Sara and Bobby and Jo Whiley that had to keep working and hold it together for their shows, they did such a brilliant job and it was a lovey tribute to Steve, playing so many of his favourite songs and artists. Jo did sound very tearful at one point.

Such sad news , I very much remember him from being a teenager in 80s and show R1 .. the afternoon show and Mr Angry oh and the pub singer as well .Oh and TOTP .RIP Steve.

Jemimapinotduck · 13/02/2024 22:11

I'm so incredibly sad at his death, have grown up listening to him... In fact was listening to him on Sunday, can't believe he's gone!

Fernticket · 13/02/2024 22:23

So sorry to hear this. I have fond memories of him on Radio 1 in the afternoon. He made my colleague and I chuckle with all the different characters.
Elvis has left the building and Mr Angry has slammed the phone down one last time.......
R.I.P Wrighty and thank you for the music.

Cocolapew · 13/02/2024 22:26

I loved his Radio 1show, I remember laughing so hard one day I couldn't start the car to leave work.

Daisyislazy · 13/02/2024 18:29

What was the bit he used to do with the sad stories?

That was Simon Bates .

PermanentTemporary · 13/02/2024 22:35

I felt included in his show on R1, I wasn't cool enough for a lot of the others. I wouldn't class myself as a particular fan or anything but I've realised tonight there's a couple of stupid catchphrases I still say that are from his show a few decades ago. RIP.

donteatthedaisies0 · 13/02/2024 22:42

Gosh I can still remember his "Steve Wright in the afternoon" jingle from the eighties . I can remember when R1 early nineties R1 decided have a shake-up of all their DJ's cos they were 'too old' apparently . I was pretty pissed off at the time . I kind of stopped listening at the time .

Likeateddybeard · 13/02/2024 22:59

Sara Cox was in tears at one point. She said she was speaking to him last weekend and he was really enthusiastic about the new venue they had moved to. It sounds like a heart attack as someone else said.

This is really sad news! I feel like Steve Wright in the Afternoon was on my whole lifetime. RIP Steve.

Yes, same here - I remember listening to him all the time at university, and then again during my maternity leave. He was just always there 😢

CrushingOnRubies · 13/02/2024 23:14

The ending of newsnight tonight has me reeling a bit weepy! They played the starting music to his bbc 2 afternoon show. And it was a really lovely segment with Gary Davis and Tony Blackburn

Emily1583 · 13/02/2024 23:16

The BBC acting like a bereaved even though they booted him off his weekday slot not long ago...

Reddog1 · 13/02/2024 23:17

Paul Gambaccini said they’d been emailing earlier in the day 😞

Such a shock.

FancyJapflack · 13/02/2024 23:22

I very rarely give a toss about celebs/people in the media dying because I never knew them.

Of course I didn’t know Steve Wright either but he’s kept me company so often over the years. Having the radio on was the norm when I first started work and that continued for years and years. The many car journeys spent listening to him. Recently it was mostly his Sunday slot.

I grew up listening to him. I’m gutted.

Appalonia · 13/02/2024 23:23

Really sad news. There's been so many lovely tributes to him on Twitter, no one had a bad word to say about him. I was sad when the BBC got rid of his afternoon show, he had great guests on and was such a good interviewer. RIP Steve, feels like the end of an era.

CurrentHun · 13/02/2024 23:34

Happy days listening to Steve Wright in the afternoon.. condolences to his friends and family.

Missfelinemoo · 13/02/2024 23:38

This has really upset me. I don't know why I feel so affected. It's shocking.

Rockschooldropout · 13/02/2024 23:40

Steve Wright in the afternoon was the best thing about Radio one in the eighties .. I can’t believe he’s gone

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 13/02/2024 23:43

Like Sara said, I hope he knew how much he was loved. All this outpouring of love is just so brilliant but I hope he already knew how much people thought of him. All his colleagues are describing him as such a close friend so hopefully he knew how much he was appreciated.

Waitingfirthephone · 13/02/2024 23:57

Too too sad for words 😞

Nanny0gg · 14/02/2024 00:05

His son lives in Camden

Unfortunately a lot of people had a lot of bad words to say about him when he was still doing the afternoon show. Past it, embarrassing, overstayed his welcome. That sort of thing. It made me cross as I really loved his show and thought they didn't know what they were talking about - they're probably being sycophants now.

Cnon · 14/02/2024 02:03

RIP, good sir!
