I don’t think he was ill. It seems to have been sudden.

stomachameleon · 13/02/2024 18:53

If you google Steve wright it brings up an article In the Oxford mail about Johnny Irwin. I wonder if that's where the confusion lies.

canttellyouwhereorwhatido · 13/02/2024 18:54

I will be honest and say he wasn't absolutely my cup of tea after about 1994..but I'm old and prefer the Archers omnibus on Sundays .. BUT .. I l turned to Sarah Cox this evening when the news broke on r4 and all I can say is that he sounds like a fabulous human... when I die , if they say nothing other than she did .. ' he was a very very kind and lovely person' .. what else needs to be known ?

Kindness in my mind is the very greatest and undervalued character trait of the truly wonderful...

Daisyislazy · 13/02/2024 18:54

@Daisypod so it was, why did I think that was Steve Wright ?

Daisypod · 13/02/2024 18:43

Wasn't that Simon Bates 'our tune'?

Yes you're right!

jackstini · 13/02/2024 19:04

Felt really sad when I saw this pop up on my news feed

Massive part of my life growing up and still so young
Seemed a lovely bloke too

I think iit must be something to do with Radio 1 in the '90's. I am still shocked that Simon Mayo is a granddad, when I remember his son being born and being disappointed that he took time off! Just goes to show how big radio was with all of them in those days.

BloodyAdultDC · 13/02/2024 19:32

Today is the second anniversary of my mum's death. I was doing ok until I put the radio on and Bobbi Traffic broke down mid-report.

Sound of both my youth and throughout my adult life.

Love to anyone missing a loved one this evening x

louderthan · 13/02/2024 19:32

Just listened to a wonderful hour of Five Live with calls from people like Tony Blackburn and Bob Harris talking about how much they enjoyed working with him and what a lovely person he was.
Really bloody sad.

Mochudubh · 13/02/2024 19:35

RIP, I used to love him and all the daft characters. Mick & Keef, Mr Angry and later on Ask Elvis would often have me in tears of laughter.

Such a shame.

Zonder · 13/02/2024 19:41

This is so sad. One of the voices of our youth. RIP Steve, and thanks for all the fun.

CrushingOnRubies · 13/02/2024 19:49

RIP

I used to love his afternoon show and love songs. It is a bit of a shock

Thought all his love song shows were recorded. That's why messages had to be in by 4pm on the Wednesday before

I've just seen this, I don't think he was ill, he was working last Sunday.

I'm really shocked.

Rest in peace Steve.

I understand that show was pre recorded

ArmsofMine · 13/02/2024 19:50

I have read he had type 2 diabetes and has previously had a stroke but don’t know if either are related to his passing.
RIP Steve Wright

LoveAHamSandwhich · 13/02/2024 19:53

RIP to a wonderful, wonderful DJ. I used to listen to his Radio 1 afternoon show, it was genius. He was like a family-friendly Kenny Everett.

MoonWoman69 · 13/02/2024 19:54

Very very sad and shocking. I grew up listening to him on the radio. Consummate professional. Nobody was or will be like him. RIP Steve Wright. You will be missed ❤

CrushingOnRubies · 13/02/2024 19:55

I really hope radio 2 plays the closing music to his afternoon show in full at some point. I love that piece of music

Willmafrockfit · 13/02/2024 19:58

it seems he only recorded the sunday show last thursday, so very recently

EachandEveryone · 13/02/2024 20:02

Is he still married to his American wife?

I loved him when I was at school? Was he always in the afternoon or did he ever do the breakfast show? Im just wondering how I heard him so much if I was at school. Such a shame.

It was 'Our Tune' with Simon Bates and the music was the theme from Romeo and Juliet

I think the split a while ago. His kids live in America I believe. He used to go to see them

Avatartar · 13/02/2024 20:05

His laugh was such a naughty, infectious giggle, it used to make me laugh and just the sound of him setting the studio off always made me feel happy.
RIP Steve, true legend

Drapion · 13/02/2024 20:10

So devistating, he felt like an old friend, I actually looked forward to my evening commute with him on the radio. Such a lovely, funny, talented man x RIP

RandomForest · 13/02/2024 20:13

Total Legend.

RIP Steve.

I don't think he was. The family said it was a very sudden death. The poor bloke probably had a heart attack.
