Please can somebody explain the hype?

I have friends (I am 50) who were seriously sad when they didn't get concert tickets (not in UK) and others who did, who were practically celebrating.

I don't get it. Don't want to ask for fear of looking like a twit.

For context, I have a 16yo DD and she just rolls her eyes and says wouldn't be caught dead at a TS concert. So no help there.

TS is a pretty big deal in our house at the moment, but it's a stage that will pass I imagine.

It's her talent + decency + weird self deprication in songs ..like a strange relatability to a billionaire..that make her hyper-popular I believe.

This current boyfriend comes accross as a boorish , toxic male 'banter' bully. Typical 'jock' and I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't last much longer. Doesn't seem the type to accept being Mr Taylor Swift long term.

To be fair if you saw his old tweets he seems quite sweet 🤣

Crucible · 13/02/2024 09:19

If you've ever seen the film Sing, the best bit is Rosita singing Shake It Off. That might help explain.

Startingagainandagain · 13/02/2024 09:22

I like her.

Catchy songs, as sense of humour, came out strongly against Trump, has been successful since her teens, writes her own songs, never went off the rails with drugs/drink, supports other women (lots of female friends), doesn't feel the need to dress like a Kardashian...

Frankly she is not a bad role model for teens!

I wouldn’t go to a concert. I don’t know why anyone wants to be amongst big crowds. But the Eras Tour movie at the cinema was really enjoyable. Massive spectacle, catchy songs, lots of variation.

Don’t have any views on Taylor herself, but how her parents have manufactured and managed her career is amazing!!

TheTwirlyPoos · 13/02/2024 09:24

She hadn't talked about Palestine?

Are you on glue?

Lol at people thinking her act is genuine. About as real as her titties.

What a twattish post. Yuck, I feel like I need a shower now.

I didn't hold her responsible, I said it demonstrates what views she finds tolerable. Her dating Matty indicates that she finds his level of racism acceptable, which isn't an example of upstanding values in my opinion. We all make mistakes, but no I haven't knowingly shared a bed with a nazi.

Other things, not at all tied to her dating life, which I find problematic are:

  • her excessive private jet use (not just one-offs for the Super Bowl) she uses it like normal folk use taxis
  • the crickets on Palestine - she has used her power to have bills in congress in DAYS when she spoke up about AI porn (which she did only because it effected her) but about genocide? Nothing. And, no, popstars aren't obligated to be activist but she used it as marketing to dress up in and sell albums and promote herself in the Lover era so her going quiet on things that matter is disappointing.
  • the incitement of fans to speculate about the private life of someone no longer associated with her who is intensely private barely a month after a press release saying how damaging that is when it happens to her.
  • her in her queen capitalist era at the cost of taking advantage of fans, I believe there are now 11 versions of Midnights, and not a single one has all tracks on it.

She is a racist because she “dated” Matty Healy for 5 minutes. Get a grip!
Why does she need to speak about Palestine? Last thing wr need is more celebs speaking about world issues they don’t understand/have no connection to.

TheaBrandt · 13/02/2024 10:17

See Bono who became a laughing stock for pontificating on world issues. Obviously don’t feel particularly sorry for billionaire super stars but they can’t win on this ! Damned if you do damned if you don’t!

BeeDavis · 13/02/2024 11:13

Don’t mind her songs, sick of seeing her face everywhere, she’s very good at getting herself noticed that’s for sureeeeee.

TheTwirlyPoos · 13/02/2024 11:37

Yeah Grammys and awards and concerts are quite good at getting you noticed.

Actually LOLed at this. Bravo.

Yes. She's not bloody Bono.

Oh give over. Don’t pretend there is no difference of literary form between a major novel and pop lyrics, even if you choose to read them as poetry. Swap in Zadie Smith or Chimamanda Ngozie Adechie if it makes you feel better and drop your lazy accusations of misogyny.

I wrote my dissertation arguing that Bob Dylan was a poet.

I don't agree about Travis Kelce. I admit I'd never heard of him before the TS connection but I've seen a bit of his podcast with his brother and a few interviews and he doesn't seem boorish in the slightest. Comes across as smart and funny. I completely get the attraction.
She was 'with' Matty Healy for about 15 minutes and I'm not sure it was ever really a thing.

Agree, he seems quite sweet on the podcast, close to his parents and family.

Then you will know that serious academic consideration of his work as poetry started in the late nineties, and we might therefore expect something similar for Swift in the next fifteen years or so. I read the Christopher Ricks book at university and found it convincing.

Have you actually heard him speak? That is not the impression I have of him at all.

TheaBrandt · 13/02/2024 12:59

I am still hoping my TS phase will pass but it’s been 10 years now am nearly 50 and it hasn’t yet abated….

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2024 14:16

I caught a bit of an interview with Travis Kelch ( might be wrong spelling there , sorry ) on tv at the weekend and he seems ok, but I'm sure that someone on mn will be along to say he isn't very soon!
I admit I know nothing about American football and don't watch it

Absolutely- I'm agreeing with you.

I wrote my dissertation in 1996!

A drop in the ocean to her. Is our bar really that low?

So you routinely get a $100,000 bonus?

I first heard her in 2008, while driving a beautiful mountain road in WV, USA. It was a hauntingly beautiful song about how we remember first loves. I was 58. I'm still a fan at 73.

annemac101 · 13/02/2024 18:29

My 7yr old granddaughter said yesterday, "oh I'm so glad Taylor Swift made it to the super bowl" I said she wasn't playing in it just watching. I don't know anything about her but had seen her the night before on the news. My granddaughter knew her boysriends name and lots about her. I was gobsmacked.

Just saw this on Twitter. Chapeau.
