Taylor Swift

Please can somebody explain the hype?

I have friends (I am 50) who were seriously sad when they didn't get concert tickets (not in UK) and others who did, who were practically celebrating.

I don't get it. Don't want to ask for fear of looking like a twit.

For context, I have a 16yo DD and she just rolls her eyes and says wouldn't be caught dead at a TS concert. So no help there.

A lot of people aren’t actual Taylor Swift fans at all but are going so they can say they were at the Era’s tour. This has meant lots of genuine fans who have supported her for years haven’t been able to get tickets.

restingbitchface30 · 13/02/2024 18:46

I don’t get it myself. Her songs are mediocre. But she is a good role model to young girls. Maybe not with the amount of fellas she’s had but everything else

Here4thechocs · 13/02/2024 18:47

Kendodd · 11/02/2024 21:08

I couldn't name a single song of hers but am really hoping she runs for president this year.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 president, you say? Seriously? The office of the leader of the free world?

Oh no, a woman dating. 🙄 Taylor herself has talked about attitudes like yours and I agree with her, they seem much more harmful. Is there an ‘ok’ number of men for women to date before people like you see her as bad?

mandlerparr · 13/02/2024 18:57

The companion question is this to ask people if there are events that they regret not going to. How many people wish they had a story about that night they went to some concert or art show or whatever. As to the hype around her? Who knows. Some artists that just happens with them. I am sure we can all name a few.

WTF. Do young girls need their pop stars to have an acceptable number of boyfriends? What's the acceptable number?

The internalised misogyny in this statement. She owes us nothing. I am looking forward to menopausal less polite TS.

Er.... Donald Trump?

She's certainly a better business person with better values. I don't think she'd want to, mind, she likes what she's doing now.

I don't think 'Murica is all that free either.

TheTwirlyPoos · 13/02/2024 19:15

I'd take Swift as president over Trump or Biden if that was my choice. We all know the system is fucked!

Moreorlessmentallystable · 13/02/2024 19:16

Because people are sheep and youngsters are so easily impressed, in the times of social media you get a good marketing team and even people with zero talent are now celebrities, at least she writes, plays instruments etc...

TheTwirlyPoos · 13/02/2024 19:16

Im enjoying making this list though of all the things that have been levelled at her from these two threads, all from posters who claim that the swifties are the fanatical ones who make crazy claims

I can now add
She's had too many boyfriends
And - I think my favourite
She's no Christina Aguilera
.

What a disgusting attitude you have. Maybe sort your internalised misogyny out. Embarrassing.

Lovely13 · 13/02/2024 19:25

Podcast on bbc sounds, good/bad billionaire, has just featured her. It is interesting

MadMadaMim · 13/02/2024 19:45

Love her.

She's an excellent role model - works hard, all her own stuff, doesn't take shite from anyone, makes people accountable and stands up proudly for what she believes in. She's not afraid of being true to herself. Gives loads to charities.

It's not even about her music (I only knew about her because may daughter loved her when she was younger) - it's the person. In today's reality celeb famous for nothing in particular culture, she's like a breath of fresh air. Sje seems genuine. The music is great pop. And the messaging is better than most

I always try and get tickets. Never managed it. Gutted each time.

Smilingthroughtears · 13/02/2024 20:24

It took going to a theme park and seeing a Taylor Swift tribute act 10 years ago for me to start listening to her music.
Now my daughter and I are total Swifties, my eldest not so much.
For me there’s the catchy pop songs, the beautiful ballads, and her music spans country, hip hop, pop, rock and jazz.
For my daughter I know part of the attraction is how she writes, we are both heavily into literature and poetry and the characters she paints, the stories and the way she uses words are very poetic and powerful. They also reflect how we feel in many ways, insecurities, love songs, songs to make you feel like a strong woman, they are all there. Yes there are pop mainstream songs, some we like some we don’t, most we like, but there’s so much more to Taylor Swift than that. So it’s not easy for people to quite grasp her popularity from the few songs that get radio play.

She was a 15 year old who started in country and wrote about what she loved. She hasn’t stopped writing and recording. There’s a massive catalogue of work there to listen to before you can truly make a judgement I think.

She is hardworking, writes all her own songs, plays guitar and piano, collaborates with lots of other artists, her concerts have become more and more elaborate and beautiful. The Eras tour took my breath away with the way they put together the dances, costumes, backing dancers/singers, scenery, the acting involved too in certain songs, her singing as she has such a strong voice which is getting better, it’s not Christina Aguilera strength but it is beautiful, and over 3 hours of artistry. She surrounds herself with good people-she gave bonuses to all her crew and drivers, she has had many of the same guitarists since she started who are older guys who seem to love being on stage with her and look after her. Her backing dancers and singers are all different shapes and sizes too which is amazing to see!
In every city she has visited she has given food and clothes to local charities.
Ultimately she loves music and writing music, she is extremely talented with words(Please listen to folklore, evermore albums and even speak now to hear that).
Her fans give friendship bracelets to each other for goodness sake and are so supportive and lovely-they are also as she is very supportive of cultural differences and also the LGBTQplus community. It’s so inclusive.
When I went to see the Eras tour with my daughter and friend at the cinema the majority of the cinema crowd went down to the front and danced together-we also swapped friendship bracelets.
So yeah I am proud to be a 42 year old swiftie. It’s a little bit of light and positivity in a dark world.

I hope you’re joking. What a revolting thing to say.

Sonora25 · 13/02/2024 20:40

@Smilingthroughtears that was a lovely summary. I know some songs but never listened to a full album buy will start now.
would definitely love to see the Eras tour, watched the film with my daughter on Amazon Prime.

TS is a pretty big deal in our house at the moment, but it's a stage that will pass I imagine.

It's her talent + decency + weird self deprication in songs ..like a strange relatability to a billionaire..that make her hyper-popular I believe.

This current boyfriend comes accross as a boorish , toxic male 'banter' bully. Typical 'jock' and I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't last much longer. Doesn't seem the type to accept being Mr Taylor Swift long term.

Have you watched much at all with Travis Kelce in? All in all he comes across a decent bloke, he seems to worship the ground she walks on and is very deferential to her and what she has achieved. He acknowledges that a lot of his current new popularity/fans is due to the woman he is dating and he doesn’t try and claim it as his own. A recent podcast with him and his brother had them musing how they were the highest selling NFL jersies in the U.K. Travis was like ‘really? Man there must be a lotta swifties in the uk’, his brother was equally respectful about it.

He doesn’t try and put her down (see Simone Biles husband) and he seems to really champion her and everything she has achieved.

threatmatrix · 13/02/2024 20:42

She is being used for political purposes.

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 13/02/2024 20:43

And let’s be clear. She could shag a different bloke every single day of the week and write a song every single time and that wouldn’t make her a bad person. The misogyny on this thread is revolting.

I would love to go with my daughter but I know I am unlikely to get tickets. The tour movie is out on Disney plus next month so I am sure we will watch it time and time again after a rough day at work/school to pick us up.

I actually work in a secondary school and have come across a good few Swifties from year 7 to 6th form and they are all really great students working hard.

MrsPetty · 13/02/2024 20:52

I am not a Swiftie but my two teen DDs are. So I know an awful lot about her. She seems like an amazingly good role model for young girls! I’m so happy my DH agreed to take them to the concert 😂 three hours 🤦🏼‍♀️ and he has to make his own friendship bracelets 🤣

T1Dmama · 13/02/2024 21:18

lavagal · 11/02/2024 20:58

She writes her own songs, has excellent values, is very smart and genuinely is kind and a decent person. So different from all the Kardashian's and fake people out there at the moment - I'm hoping my daughter grows up to appreciate someone like Taylor swift

This
my daughter (13) likes her, as does my 19 year old niece.
I don’t do concerts, but if Taylor Swift concerts fell in my lap I’d be pretty chuffed!
I wish we’d gone and seen her concert at the cinema when that was an option !

TheaBrandt · 13/02/2024 21:28

We went as a family to see Reputation remember Dd2 then about 9 turning to me and saying “this is the best night of my life” 😀

Funnywonder · 13/02/2024 21:58

I think people are a bit 😲 when there are comparisons to Shakespeare and serious discussions around whether Taylor Swift would make a good President. Most fans don't talk about their favourite pop singers in these overblown terms. I absolutely and utterly disagree with those who resort to comments about her appearance, her love life, whether she's a 'proper' feminist and other such irrelevant nonsense. But I also think it's perfectly ok to find her music unappealing. It's just an opinion and doesn't need swarms of fans rushing in to quote lyrics and list her attributes. I know there are people crying into their cornflakes because they missed out on concert tickets, so she's exceptionally popular, but there are plenty of artists who fill stadiums and I think they're godawful. I'm pretty sure they and their fans don't give a toss what I think. Which is fair enough.
