I think Victoria is well aware of the many misconceptions abounding about Shane & this was her last moment to honour him before burial. I think they had a remarkable bond to have weathered such a long life together. They very clearly loved each other.

Abhannmor · 09/12/2023 15:36

I used to fish and swim in Dalkey when poor people still lived there. No accounting for the property carousel. I met lovely people from Ballymun too. Bally-er had its problems back in the day. I'd love to live in Glasnevin tbh. None of those places is a 'war zone' by any stretch. But of course Gono was trying to imply that he was caught in some sectarian conflict , in another part of the island perhaps?

LlynTegid · 09/12/2023 15:39

Whether or not you loved his music, you should admire his lyrics and what they captured.

ChristmasTreeMagic · 09/12/2023 15:47

When / where did bono claim he was in a war zone?

As we're giving Glen Hansard a bit of love on this thread,

I have to remind everyone of how his mum took his Oscar off him and carried around in a plastic bag, taking it out to show the women at Bingo.

That cracked me up 😃

Some people aren't too keen on Glen Hansard due to his past with Markéta Irglová, his co-star in the film One - she was 19 and he 37 when they were public about their relationship but he made some comments that people were disturbed by (see pic)

I knew she was his collaborator on Once, I didn't know that was the age difference!

JaneJeffer · 09/12/2023 17:24

Are they still together?

That's so grim isn't it. She was 13 and he was 31 when they met and he had to keep telling himself she was a kid? Well yes, yes she was. I've gone right off him now, despite his amazing performance at the funeral.

A quick Google states they were together 2 years.

Feels a bit dodgy alright, she has said he was respectful and her father blessed the relationship and the two of them have toured together so I don't know

I have to say, I don’t think there has been a year of my adult life that I haven’t listened to the Pogues.

My Ex from many moons ago used to sing a Pair of Brown Eyes at me when he was full of the drink.

We had a pint with Shane when we went down to that London to see them. A magical night and a treasured memory. Walking back to our hotel all you heard was folk singing. A night of camaraderie, joy and love.

Me? I love so many of their songs but the one that I listen to most is Thousands Are Sailing.

I can’t hear Rainy Night in Soho without thinking how beautiful it is.

As so many have said, it wasn’t just music but sheer poetry.

ArcaneWireless · 09/12/2023 18:07

@JaneJeffer

Merry Christmas. 😘

Touching to see how emotional the people taking part are. Camille O'Sullivan struggled to sing, and Aiden Gillen had to keep stopping to sniff in his reading.

Camille was being Camille and her and Aiden Gillen are a well matched pair.

I'm from Dalkey and poor people still live there.

Also Imelda May, Liam OMaonlai and Declan Orourke were sublime at the start of the funeral.

Liam O's tin whistle was beautiful, Really haunting.

There was just something very moving about the artists gathering round their fallen comrade.

ArsenicInTheAppleTart · 09/12/2023 18:20

I have so many memories tied up in the songs of The Pogues as my Dad loved them and I feel I grew up listening to them. The Broad Majestic Shannon is particularly special to me.

ArsenicInTheAppleTart · 09/12/2023 18:21

I found the funeral really moving. Beautifully and fittingly rowdy. A true celebration of Shane's life.

Do you know them? I'm sensing some tea...

I loved it when they clambered over the pews to dance! It was joyous.

As for his wife, she has just lost her soul mate of 35 or so years. Critiquing her eulogy is, to borrow your phrase, cringey.

Edited

I don't share your view. The funeral was a huge tribute to him. Some of the behaviour wasn't.

All I'll say is Shane was always the real deal. No pretensions but ended up surrounded by fake dom. There were moments of real genuine emotion, Spider singing The Parting Glass and Cait singing was just lovely and Jesus, poor Maurice.

Gotcha.

Yes his poor dad. He looked so frail and grief stricken. You feel for any parent burying their child.

RallySooney · 09/12/2023 18:59

Arsenic, I love that his ashes will be scattered in the broad majestic Shannon. I too, like your dad always loved that song.

ChristmasTreeMagic · 09/12/2023 19:30

I think Shane would have 100% enjoyed people dancing to his music. I can hear his funny laugh now!
