Nick Cave on Shane MacGowan:

"I know I should be talking about the pure unbridled genius of Shane MacGowan and how he was the greatest songwriter of his generation, with the most terrifyingly beautiful of voices — all of which is true. But what struck me at that moment was the extraordinary display of love for this man, so powerful and deep, that poured forth from the audience. It was like nothing I’ve ever experienced.. and in that moment, it brought to mind the short poem by Raymond Carver:

And did you get what
you wanted from this life, even so?
I did.
And what did you want?
To call myself beloved, to feel myself
beloved on the earth.

Great Nick Cave comment, but what he (just) missed in that was that it wasn't simply an 'audience', it was a congregation, at Mass, in a church where hundreds of people, many of whom knew and loved Shane and his family, worship every week. What he was experiencing was being in a place full of prayers - always a special experience, at any funeral.

"Oh dear, was someone forcing you to watch the entire thing? That's difficult"

For anyone interested that hasn't seen it, lovely tribute to Shane on the Late Late show:

I can’t believe that poster is bothered about the coverage! If you don’t want watch turn it off and do something else in future!

I thought it was fascinating and moving. We had a sing song at my grandmother’s funeral and the memory of it still makes me smile.

^ he was talking about a gig he shared with Shane, not the funeral - and the audiences reaction.

ah, okay, thought it was a reference to the funeral.

Beautiful post @Chinhairsoftheworldunite !
There's a heartbreakingly beautiful book that really captures the hardships of the Irish men who emigrated to London in the 50s / 60s.
I can't read it without crying & yet I find myself drawn to it like a moth to a flame. It's called I Could Read The Sky by Timothy O'Grady & Steve Pyke with an introduction by John Berger. It's a collaboration of novel & photographs of Irish diaspora

John Berger said 'the photographs are a reminder of everything which is beyond the power of words....and the words recall what can never be made visible in any photograph.

I would add that Shane & the pogues made the sorrow & the loneliness & the joy & the celebrating & the drowning of memory & the longing for home visceral & immediate.

It's a truly unforgettable book & it will stay in your heart forever. I can't read it without crying.

People seem to be surprised that Shane and his sister spoke with an English accent. Victoria is Irish born and reared and has an English accent. That happens if you live in a place for most of your life. You could hear the adaptations in eg Terry Wogans voice too. Some ppl are impervious to the surrounding culture...not many I'd venture.
