but Google his performance with the Dubliners or Nick Cave he can hardly stand or sing

Thats part of his charm. He couldn’t stand or sing because he was probably pissed. They all were all the time. This is why people loved them. They were rough and ready and vital.

Im sure Nick Cave had his moments with The Birthday Party

Missed it, seen some on news. Really moving to see how much respect has been given to Shane. Too many recent losses of decent people too early , Sinead, Shane, Zephaniah, others. RiP all of you.

JaneJeffer · 09/12/2023 10:25

One good song yes,
I recommend you listen to Rum, Sodomy & The Lash and see if you can find more than one good song

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/12/2023 10:29

One good song🙄

Rainy Night in soho was a masterpiece.

I remember an interview with Pete Shelley when the Buzzcocks were starting. They bought the cheapest guitar possible and l think they took one of the strings off. They couldn’t play it and were laughing about it. They didn’t care about performing well. That was the whole point.

Shane came from that type of thinking.

newnamethanks · 09/12/2023 10:30

Fairytale is the ultimate immigrant song, the other side of the success story. It's a great piece of writing and performance and understood by most. If you don't get it pp, you never will.

Janiie · 09/12/2023 10:33

'why do you think renowned musicians & performers were so happy to collaborate & perform with him? His list of admirers from the highest echelons of music is seriously impressive'

I don't know it's a mystery! Was it the irish rogue persona? . Nick Cave is utterly brilliant and his voice is just amazing so yes he must've seen something in Macgowan. Just what? (Other then the iconic FONY obviously). Or did they just bond over their well documented addictions?

I can't help thinking it's the anti English thing that made him so popular yet he was born and brought up in Kent. Nice to see Gerry Adams give a speech at the funeral.

Thedrownedprophet · 09/12/2023 10:35

Re his Irishness. He was born in Kent when his parents were visiting g family for Christmas. He was then brought home to Tipp for 6 years until they had to emigrate. He spent all his summers and holidays here until he was an adult and very much considered himself an Irish man. It wasn't an affected persona.

His dad spoke about this at length in the documentary I recommended down thread.

The Irish emigrant story is complex.

"The savage loves his native shore,
Though rude the soil and chill the air;
Then well may Erin’s sons adore
Their isle, which nature formed so fair.
What flood reflects a shore so sweet
As Shannon great, or pastoral Bann?
Or who a friend or foe can meet
So generous as an Irishman?"

newnamethanks · 09/12/2023 10:36

Well done for coming onto a memorial thread to trash him. Have some manners if you're acquainted with the concept.

Never heard of it. Proving my point tbh.

Thedrownedprophet · 09/12/2023 10:39

@Janiie I recommend you listen to Rum, Sodomy and Lash and if I should fall from Grace with God.

Or just read the lyrics.

He was a poet. As good as any poets we've produced, and we have some good ones.

It's the words that separate him from other lyricists.

EachandEveryone · 09/12/2023 10:39

I wished I’d gone to the Claddagh Ring yesterday to watch it. I think Shane would balk at the prices these Irish pubs charge now. Oh the student memories. The memories of having loads of Irish nurse friends at the time. I don’t know where they all went to. It seems like yesterday 😕

I bet he gave his family some sleepless nights especially in his teen years and, can you imagine if Victoria was on here?!! We’d be telling her to LTB every day!

Janii

Well aren’t you just a joy?

I can’t think of any other singer who had had their entire funeral on tv. Nor has any other provoked singing in the street to honour him.

Go and find another thread to piss on the parade.

Thedrownedprophet · 09/12/2023 10:41

"Never heard of it. Proving my point tbh"

It really isn't.

newnamethanks · 09/12/2023 10:43

It's definitely proving something pp but not what you think it is. To be clear, it's not something to be proud of.

ChristmasTreeMagic · 09/12/2023 10:44

@Janiie he was considered by those who collaborated with him to be a highly skilled & talented musician who reinvigorated the folk songs & music of a nation

I think you're letting your own ignorance (prejudice) guide you here. Perhaps you could try to take on board all the reasons so many of us have posted as to why he is so mourned now?

Just because you've never heard any of his music apart from 1 song doesn't mean others havent!

CuteOrangeElephant · 09/12/2023 10:45

I've been a fan of Glen Hansard (and the Frames) for years - his performance at the funeral was great.

Some of my favourite musicians are not great at singing, like Leonard Cohen. His lyrics however are some of the best ever written.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/12/2023 10:46

This!

I said to Dh last night, you sort of live in your own little world thinking you were the only one who really liked them. Then l saw the packed streets of Dublin and such a massive range of age and so many people.

Thedrownedprophet · 09/12/2023 10:48

Nick Cave tells a story of how they were collaborating together at Shane's house and he pointed to what looked like a pile of trash and soda "there's a few lyrics over there"

He said as he read through them, it was clear that every single word and been considered and was of the highest quality.

He was a mass of contradictions really.

ChristmasTreeMagic · 09/12/2023 10:49

It's an interesting question isn't it 'what.does great at singing mean?

Lots of the very best most beloved musicians have unique voices that are not necessarily trained- Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen etc and yet its the very human-ness of them that we connect to & their ability to be authentic & convey emotions that we respond to.

ChristmasTreeMagic · 09/12/2023 10:51

Shane McGowan was an incredibly intelligent & well read person.

I also think it's remarkable how the overwhelming commentary & memories as being shared all say what a kind, thoughtful.& humane person he was despite appearances. I can only hope to have people think of me that way

Togomalone · 09/12/2023 10:54

It was bloody amazing! All 3 hours of it. I can’t believe I spent my Friday night watching a funeral!

It had something for everyone… those of us who are second gen Irish immigrants, artists who are driven by their creativity and passion at the cost of an easier life (speaking from experience!), families of addicts. Even the religious!! Basically if you’re interested in humanity I think you will find it inspiring.

A complex man, a talented poet and flawed human with a beautiful soul. So many people there to celebrate his life’s work, but also his humanity. I can’t imagine being that popular, especially as he was written off as a drunk by the media (which he was, but he was so much more than that… Bruce Springsteen recently visited him at home, he must have some big draw!).

I’m feeling really inspired today to live my life to the full, embrace my flaws and keep contributing my gifts to the world as only humans can (AI doesn’t stand a chance against us- you need a soul to create beautiful, meaningful culture!).

Recommend to people even if you are not a Pogues fan.

I have been reading a bit about him, he went to a public school on a scholarship because he was so incredibly well-read and talented with words, he's not a "public schoolboy" like he was born into it.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/12/2023 10:57

He got expelled though😁His dad was a university lecturer l think.

And his dad took great pleasure in telling his teacher at Westminster to "Fuck off" the day he was expelled too 😀

I cried buckets! The Irish know how to do funerals ❤️☘️

This!

There were three types of potato, a whole salmon and a band at my MILs wake.

Loved the pogues. Sad at Shane’s passing
