It is a beautiful service and Nick Cave was brilliant as ever but tbh I'm surprised it's getting the coverage it is. Many people love Fairytale of New York but I bet none of us could name any other Pogue hits. Sky news treating it like a VIP has sadly died.

You are joking!!! Soundtrack of my 20s and beyond. Listening to various tributes on the radio I've been amazed by just how many Pogues songs I know.

There'll be one almighty party going on in Dublin right now!

The Fairytale in New York performance was brilliant, the bloke singing was amazing as was the woman.

Listening to his sister's eulogy I had no idea they were born and brought up in England. Didn't he speak wirh an Irish accent?

And yes Depp's faux accent was weird.

I was surprised to hear he was a public schoolboy born in Kent. Famous people are generally very intelligent and well connected despite the persona. Great songwriter, RIP.

Thedrownedprophet · 08/12/2023 19:08

That funeral was cathartic. Have to say you wouldn't want to tell his wife your business though 😂

"We walked him to the station in the rain. We kissed him as we put him on the train. We sang him a song of times long gone, but we knew that we'd be seeing him again"

❤️❤️

Atethehalloweenchocs · 08/12/2023 19:12

It surely was an exercise in speed-communioning!

FeltCarrot · 08/12/2023 19:18

Dirty Old Town, my favourite Pogues song, was written by Ewan McColl, father of Kirsty and was actually about Salford!

RallySooney · 08/12/2023 19:23

The Parting Glass and the poem written by The Pogues drummer was very poignant.

Mama1980 · 08/12/2023 19:23

Loved his words, loved his music.
I always found the paradox of his life interesting, public school boy born in middle class England v Irish rebel...but he made it work.
May he rest in peace.

He started life in Tunbridge Wells?

3luckystars · 08/12/2023 19:28

Is there anywhere I can watch this back now, only caught parts of it and would love to hear the music.

megletthesecond · 08/12/2023 19:44

3lucky it's all on BBC iplayer news channel.

Thedrownedprophet · 08/12/2023 19:45

Look for. "The Great Hunger - Shane Macgowan". On YouTube . Really explains his roots and influences.

LadyEloise1 · 08/12/2023 19:50

Forgive me - it was Lisa O' Neill and not Cathy Davey singing Fairytale of New York with Glen Hansard at the funeral. 🙈

LuluBlakey1 · 08/12/2023 19:53

I thought bits of it were very moving. His sister spoke very movingly and well. Johnny Depp's Irish accent made me smile. The musical performance of 'Fairytale of New York' was magical as was much of the music. There was so much respect and love shown for him......but bits of the service were ...... unusual. I cringed at the behaviour of some of the crowds in the streets, and the women clambering over the top of the pews in the church to dance at the front to Fairytale of New York and at his wife's 'eulogy' - rambling, no boundaries whatsoever about talking about other people and what might not be appropriate to say/share...but perhaps that was just how they were together, eccentric to the last. There won't be another Shane McGowan. RIP.

She sang it well and even sang arse on the altar.

LuluBlakey1 · 08/12/2023 19:57

Glen Hansard was fabulous and the woman who sang with him really performed so well- she was spot on. There was a point another man tried to sing a verse and was struggling and Glen Hansard just stepped up and supported him without taking over. It was a performance, not a 'look at me, I'm performing'. It was about something being right, and a part of something bigger today, rather than attention-seeking. I thought a few people today were attention-seeking in their behaviours sadly.

Glen Hansard really was magnificent. I hadn't heard of him before but I've googled and he's touring I may even get tickets and yes when the younger man couldn't quite get enough oomph to his voice Hansard sang with him, really uplifting performance.

The wife I don’t think she was with it totally I mean it must’ve been nerves talking about Johnny and Amber in church my mother was aghast 😂

Really don't think it was nerves. It was a strange eulogy/performance.

She did say she had been up since 5am so maybe it was that - or perhaps she has no boundaries. But I felt for his father during some of what she had to say......... The music was amazing though, loved the choir and Fairytale was magic.

LouMorris · 08/12/2023 20:30

They sung the parting glass? Beautiful song. I think wife is an angel artist or something

LadyEloise1 · 08/12/2023 20:35

@Janiie
Glen Hansard won an Oscar in 2008 for the Best Original Song - Falling Slowly, from the movie Once, sung with Marketa Irglova.

It's beautiful.

Glen and Bono can be found on Grafton Street in Dublin on Christmas Eve where there is a Big Busk in aid of the Simon Community.
It's not guaranteed though that they'll be there.

I saw Bono and Hansard & co. in Grafton Street a good few years ago now. Dublin's getting a bad press at the moment, but there is honestly nothing as magical as Grafton Street (and the performers/buskers) on Xmas Eve. Then around to the Shel for an (expensive but worth it) pint and lots of people watching.

smileannie · 08/12/2023 21:47

Hope he is up in heaven where he belongs, having fun, making mischief and poetry with the recently departed Benjamin Zephaniah.

Born in Kent but spent first 6 years in Tipperary. Then summer holidays I expect like most UK based Irish. His accent when speaking is basically London with an admixture of Irish. I wasn't really listening to Johnny Depp tbh. But actors are a bit like blotting paper - they absorb accents I suppose.
I felt for Nick Cave ....he was obviously in bits.

When I saw the Pogues I was surprised at all the kids in Arsenal hats who seemed to know the lyrics. And this was a couple of years before Fairytale came out. But then he was the poet of the Diaspora I guess.

Newmum110 · 08/12/2023 22:17

Lovely funeral exactly how he would have wanted it I would imagine. Big credit to the priest, he dealt with it amazingly.
