A historic petition has been launched, potentially leading to the deprivation of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's voting rights in the Council of the European Union.

And not before time.

DancesWithDucks · 10/01/2024 12:57

It would be wonderful if people could get in touch with their MEP quickly to support this notion!

More than 800 pyrotechnics inspect the Kherson region every day, in comparison with 80 last March, said Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the Kherson Regional Military Administration. [not sure they actually mean pyrotechnics]

My licence to fire not-for-sale-to-the-public fireworks in displays describes me as a pyrotechnic, so it may be that it's the right word for people who set off explosions in a (more or less!) controlled way, as well as for the explosives they set off.

Re: Petition to remove Voting Rights from Hungarian PM Victor Órban

Mr Órban has consistently fought to block support for Ukraine using every dirty trick he can. He has moved Hungary itself to a more authoritarian, less democratic country and I believe he no longer conforms to guiding principles of the European Union.

These are dangerous times and the EU needs to hold together and for its principles. When a member is consistently destructive to those principles, and when they are actively blocking help provided to a country in desperate need of support, after attempts at negotiation have failed it is time to reduce their influence.

Ukraine is the bulwark against Russian aggression and it is vital they are supported. It is also vital that EU principles are upheld.
On Friday morning, Finnish MEP Petri Sarvamaa will submit a petition to suspend Mr Órban’s voting rights.

Please support this petition!

Unless we stand together against the actions of the Hungarian PM, the EU is badly weakened from within. It is in our interests to ensure that the EU can work together to support Ukraine and to support itself.

Here's some rather brutal (trigger warning) reporting from the front line last year that illustrates why Ukraine's counter-offensive failed to cut the land bridge.

Ukraine's focus now is on deep strikes, which I think is the right course of action currently, particularly hitting inside Russian territory and military targets in Crimea.

Ukraine’s War Effort Is Stuck. This Heroic Battlefield Failure Shows Why - Rout of elite Ukraine forces in counteroffensive is a lesson in why the war effort is stalled

Ukraine’s War Effort Is Stuck. This Heroic Battlefield Failure Shows Why.

The deadly rout of elite Ukraine forces in last year’s counteroffensive against Russian invaders is a lesson in why the country’s war effort is stalled after nearly two years.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Kremlin’s effort to use the mythos of the Great Patriotic War (Second World War) to prepare the Russian public for a long war in Ukraine is at odds with Russia’s current level of mobilization and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s rhetorical attempts to reassure Russians that the war will not have lasting domestic impacts.
  • The Kremlin may be instructing actors in the Russian-backed breakaway republic of Transnistria to set information conditions for a possible false-flag operation in Transnistria as part of wider Kremlin efforts to destabilize Moldova.
  • The Kremlin may also be reviving its efforts to leverage Transnistria to create instability in Moldova in order to undermine Ukrainian grain exports along the western coast of the Black Sea.
  • Iran has reportedly developed a new Shahed drone for Russian forces to use against Ukraine and is “close” to providing Russia with surface-to-surface ballistic missiles and systems.
  • European Union (EU) Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton stated that the EU will be able to supply Ukraine with one million shells by spring 2024.
  • Lithuania announced a new long-term military aid package to Ukraine worth 200 million euros (about $220 million) on January 10.
  • The very characteristics that make the Russian ultranationalist milblogger community popular – its perceived independence from and willingness to criticize the Russian government – likely continue to complicate the Kremlin’s efforts to co-opt the community as Kremlin mouthpieces.
  • Russian insider sources continue to discuss the reported removal of First Deputy Head of the Main Directorate of the Russian General Staff (GRU), Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, who was reportedly in charge of the Russian “Volunteer Corps” that was intended to replace the Wagner Group in Ukraine.
  • Russian forces advanced southwest of Bakhmut and Donetsk City and in the east (left) bank of Kherson Oblast amid continued positional engagements along the entire front.
  • Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov stated on January 10 that the Russian military plans to reorganize the five existing naval infantry brigades of Russia’s fleets into naval infantry divisions and the Caspian Flotilla’s naval infantry regiment into a naval infantry brigade in the medium-term.
  • Russian authorities continue to deport prisoners from prisons in occupied Ukraine to Russia and are likely using penal colonies as part of widespread efforts to collect data on Ukrainian citizens.

❗️ The occupiers hit two missiles near the hotel in the center of Kharkiv. So far, ten victims are known, among them journalists of the Turkish publication who lived in the hotel, said the head of the Regional Military Administration Oleh Syniegubov.

The strategic mistake of Germany, France, Italy, and Spain—the classic core nations of NATO—was underestimating the potential duration of the Russian-Ukrainian war and desiring a quicker resolution, as noted by Niko Lange, a senior researcher at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA), in a commentary for Euractiv.
Lange emphasizes the critical need for Ukraine to conserve artillery ammunition, pointing out that in certain frontline areas, they are unable to retaliate and are subjected to shelling simply due to a lack of ammunition.

During the Ukraine-NATO Council meeting, the allies pledged to provide assistance to Kyiv in enhancing its air defense capabilities in 2024. This support encompasses joint efforts, including the purchase of anti-aircraft missiles designed for Patriot systems. Additionally, collaboration is expected with Germany for the Skynex systems and with Britain for the procurement of anti-aircraft missiles.
