Happy New Year, everyone. Whilst we don't have the results we were hoping for 12 months, neither does Russia. As it stands, NATO has expanded, Ukraine can export via the Black Sea and it's started the accession process for EU status. Russia may still have the Donas region but it has lost over 300,000 troops and 73 billion roubles on a war that was supposed to last less than a week. Here's hoping 2024 brings more positive news for Ukraine.

Do you know, I could wish the same for Russia too. If ever there's a culture that needs a huge amount of healing and improving, it's Russia.

Someone I knew used to say that the words "I will pray for you", when said in the right tone, were the worst insult in the English language, implying as they did that you really, really needed the intercession.

I missed the newest troll attack. The thread went up by 2 pages since last night and I thought maybe something significant happened Ukraine-wise, before reading the new messages only to see it’s another incarnation of LieBig making an appearance.

Generally I do agree with not engaging with the trolls, on the other hand I do think it’s important to address points that they make that risk peddling the Russian narrative unchallenged. More for those silently reading than anything else.

Agreed. In particular, I think it's utterly vital to point out the outright racism of the idea that the Ukrainians are somehow being controlled and put up to it all by the West. Because even if someone's trolling, it's an idea that has the potential to spread if it isn't set out very clearly that it's pure bigotry and stems from a view of Ukrainians as lesser.

I agree @Igotjelly. I would be surprised if it's someone being paid, if it is, their employers are spending their money badly because they aren't very good at the job.

I meant to add that they must be a very sad, badly educated, lonely, gullible individual. We obviously play on their mind if they keep going to the trouble of fake accounts to post their crap here.

I think sometimes we (and I include myself in that) write off people with those views as extremist, uneducated and in the minority. There are a good few otherwise sensible, educated individuals who think we’ve wasted good money on a lost cause in Ukraine. You only have to look at the Brexit referendum to see in the UK that otherwise good people can be duped by lies.
