The particular Ukrainians I know in the UK grew up speaking Russian as an equal mother-tongue with Ukrainian.

They have now stopped speaking Russian in favour of Ukrainian.

(I didn't ask: they made a point of telling me. It really matters to them.)

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 11/12/2023 17:04

Their president was a Russian speaker who now speaks only Ukrainian. I think?

Yes that's correct.

It's a very sad consequence of the war. The Russian language is getting entangled in all of this. I was at the primary school production another day and they had to write "welcome" in as many languages as possible. I counted 38 languages but Russian was absent. Really sad.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 11/12/2023 17:42

This is not unakin to being sad if Jewish refugees and their hosts in 1936 and 1937 were disinclined to speak German, isn't it.

backtowinter · 11/12/2023 18:00

@Tulipsroses Are you Ukrainian ?

DancesWithDucks · 11/12/2023 18:28

I do think it's sad that Russia has acted in a way that makes them outcasts in any civilized society. It's sad they destroyed Chechnya and Syria. It's sad that their guarentees towards Ukraine were broken into little smithereens. It's sad that they have slid into a mafia society and encouraged that slide in other societies.

But I'm afraid they did, and it's other people are paying the price - a price that couldn't be higher. I can't care in the slightest about Russian language not being provided as an option.

L1ttledrummergirl · 11/12/2023 18:32

No Ukrainian would refer to Kyiv as Kiev. That tends to be a Russian bot thing (not saying this poster is, but if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck you can draw your own conclusions).

The posting style in reminiscent to me of the conspiracy theory language I waded through trying to extract a family member. A tiny grain of truth, distorted to fit a narrative.

The Ukrainians I know in the UK are not pragmatic, and the Russians are sad about what their country has become.

@Tulipsroses Are you Ukrainian ?

I was born in USSR to Jewish mother and Ukrainian father.

I would agree with you 100% Russia is a mafia state with terrorist methods. Thats why the west should mobilize all the resources to crush Putins Russia on the battlefield in Ukraine. The price is very high with China and the global south are all looking at this and weighting their chances. Look at Venezuela!
I am totally against the petty sanctions which accomplish nothing. But the worst of all is the culture war where apparently now the Russian language is somehow guilty for the war.

DancesWithDucks · 11/12/2023 19:05

But the worst of all is the culture war where apparently now the Russian language is somehow guilty for the war.

The worst is the war where people die.

I can't understand where on earth you are coming from when you see a very understandable turning away from the Russian language by Ukrainians as worse than the thefts, rapes, child kidnappings, torture, murders and destruction of towns and Mariupol.

Igotjelly · 11/12/2023 19:09

It’s interesting they just entirely ignore the accusations of being a bot….. πŸ€–

DancesWithDucks · 11/12/2023 19:09

For example, Mari'inka, Bakhmut, Grozny, Mariupol,

I just can’t take anything Tulips says seriously. The posts are full of holes and questionable content, and that’s being generous.

I help to accommodate Ukranian refugees in the UK. The language is never an issue, I haven't met an Ukranian who doesn't speak Russian. It's just a method of communication nothing else. I don't understand why on this thread it becomes a political issue?

Greenshake · 11/12/2023 19:41

I hosted a Ukranian guest. She didn’t speak Russian.

Tulipsroses · 11/12/2023 19:42

@DancesWithDucks
Am I in any way questing Russian war crimes or their ariel bombing, or their tactics? They behave like a terrorist state that's why they should be stoped and defeated!

Tulipsroses · 11/12/2023 19:49

I'm sorry maybe I'm trying to look at the war objectively and faced with some petty criticism about misspelling or language preference.
You won't see me here again.

Greenshake · 11/12/2023 20:13

Feel free to correct me, but wasn’t it you that raised the language issue?

DancesWithDucks · 11/12/2023 20:20

Tulipsroses · 11/12/2023 19:39

Because Russia wants to exterminate Ukraine and the Ukrainian language by forcing people to speak Russian in occupied territories.

By destroying by burning books in the Ukrainian language.

By teaching only in Russian, in the occupied territories.

By the state-sanctioned propagandists calling Ukrainian a village language invented by others.

If you don't see that language has been made into a political issue by Russia, just as being Ukrainian has been made into a political issue by Russia you do not understand how the destruction of a national identity is achieved.

Destroying a language is one of the good ways of erasing an identity. That's why in Cornwall, Ireland, Wales and Scotland the native languages were erased or nearly erased by the English govts in the past. Many other languages have been deliberately destroyed by conquerors.

That's why it is respectful for people to call the capital city Kyiv, not Kiev, because that is what Ukrainians call it, and disrespectful not to. They are the ones whose culture Russia is eradicating.

That's why language is political.

DancesWithDucks · 11/12/2023 20:23

And you're right, this thread is partisan and pro-Ukraine. Because this invasion was absolutely unjustified and because Russia is behaving appallingly and attacking not only Ukraine physically, but the West and its political institutions generally.

Howpo · 11/12/2023 20:24

Igotjelly · 11/12/2023 19:09

It’s interesting they just entirely ignore the accusations of being a bot….. πŸ€–

I was called a bot etc, avoided the "donations" crap though... its pretty disgraceful that when anyone has an alt view, such as i did and Tulip has, we get called bots... yet when you and others (on here) agreed with me over Brexit, i was pretty much applauded..

Ukraine is in the shit, it always has been, we didn't supply anti missile and anti ship missiles when they'd have made the biggest impact and now they are facing a Trump victory next November and if that happens, probably will be over run, as i said earlier (which also caused so much shit) Russia can produced dumb munitions forever more and has a huge pool of young men and women it will sacrifice.

Its very sad that posters on here have such little tolerance & believe the pro Ukraine propaganda unreservedly.

DancesWithDucks · 11/12/2023 20:26

You haven't? I have; or at least only rudimentary Russian.

And yes it's extremely an issue in all the people who left Ukraine that I've come across / heard about here. Frankly I don't believe this sentence of yours. Some people used to speak Russian as their first language and now they are struggling to learn Ukrainian fluently - but they are keeping going, because they don't want to speak Russian any more.

Greenshake · 11/12/2023 20:31

@Howpo given your clear disdain for this thread, the content and the contributors tell me….why are you here?

DancesWithDucks · 11/12/2023 20:42

@L1ttledrummergirl the Russians you know are generally anti the invasion then? I only knew one though he was anti war. We fell out when he kept on telling me to kill and eat my ducks.
