If you don't like tattoos

Can you say why?

I'm fed up of people who think those with tattoos are rough arsed bikers, thick or common.

OP posts:
itsalongwaybackfromsorry · 12/11/2023 15:45

I dislike the way they look. I think most tattoos are ugly, especially as they fade over time and people's bodies age/change. And they're not like jewellery you can switch up, wear or not wear.

And why on earth would I want someone else's 'art' or words on my body for the rest of my life? Boring.

RampantIvy · 12/11/2023 15:46

I think @Stroopwaffels comment was tongue in cheek @catwithflowers.

I don’t currently want a tattoo, but I can see that I may in the future should I lose a loved one. It would be somewhere only I could see and would be a little piece of a memory of a loved one.

I don’t like most tattoos, I think that they age badly and think it strange to place them somewhere where you can’t see them yourself.

My feelings are contradictory, and I think that they are usually a bad idea as you change your likes and dislikes many times during your lifetime.

My brother died suddenly when he was 20 and I was a teenager. Horrific and devastating, and 35 years later I still miss him. But I can’t imagine how colouring an area of my skin would help in any way. I don’t need prompting to remember him.

"They can also be so pretentious - images of “significance”, like a random number , basically begging people to ask why they’re there, so they can bang on about something of no interest to anyone else!"

I might be wrong, but I generally find people who aren't interested in stuff don't tend to ask about said stuff 🙃

I don't like them.

  1. Mostly, it is undoubtedly inherited snobbery. That's mainly down to my mum's voice in my head and middle-class small c conservative views (I don't like the lip filler trend, blah blah). Now, I try and call myself out on being a judgmental snob, but it's hard to shift. My default is to not like it, and I have to tell myself not to be so judgmental.
  2. They are a bit scary to me - especially facial tattoos. I associate them with prisons, possibly the hard right, and definitely 'big drunk men' style violence. It can be hard to not view difference with fear - I barely know anyone with tattoos, certainly nobody heavily tattooed. So, I find it scary. If a man is heavily tattooed, I just find them scary. I might cross the street.
  3. I find it hard to not think 'you've ruined your body' - especially highly visible tattoos. Google the theatre director Jamie Lloyd. I knew him as a teenager. I can't believe what he's done to himself - it feels like it's mutilation, that he's addicted and god knows what rabbit hole of decision making he's gone down to think it was a good idea.

Caveat: I have an exception for henna / tattoos associated with non-Western culture on people of that culture, and I just accept that as part of their way of living. I might not 'like' it, but I don't 'judge' in the way I do others - I find it really easy to reconcile it in my head for them - I wish I could be the same with everyone.

I'm also probably very similar in thinking to the above.

Changedmymind99 · 12/11/2023 15:47

I just feel like they they are somewhat attention seeking.
I also think most people will eventually regret then.

Hippidyhop · 12/11/2023 15:47

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 12/11/2023 15:44

Why is it 'judgemental bullshit'? For a start, it's an opinion that was asked for by the OP. The fact that it doomday's opinion is one that is widely shared, even if people don't openly judge, means that the person with the tattoo has considered that their choice may limit them and/or that their personal display isn't validated.

I mean, they must on some level know this and think, "don't care what you think' or they'd be really foolish, wouldn't they? I have every respect for people who do what they want to their own bodies, not so much for people who do this and then need to keep canvassing opinions on it.

Own your choices and accept that other people may or may not like them.

The person you quoted didn’t mention tattooed, they were talking about the phrase ‘an unfortunate birth mark’ - reread what they’ve said…

I would - I'd get one saying 'My other car is a Skoda'

haha both very funny

DeadBugMountainClimber · 12/11/2023 15:48

I don’t like the way they look.

JamSandle · 12/11/2023 15:45

Honestly don't worry about what other people think. Just do what makes you happy.

No one has said otherwise. OP asked opinions.

SayingwhatIreallythink · 12/11/2023 15:49

The ones I’ve seen on young people mostly look like someone’s been at them with a Sharpie. To me it’s like someone doodling on a desk, then wanting to sell that desk in a years time, but on their body instead, so stuck with it for life.

I actually really like the watercolour ones, but I assume they’re too costly for most people.

MintGreenPolo · 12/11/2023 15:49

I just don’t like the way they look and think they are ugly (you did ask)

NovemberName · 12/11/2023 15:51

I don't care either way on other people. I've dated men with tattoos all over their arms. I have a discrete tattoo on my ass.

I would never ever pass a negative comment on anyone's tattoo.

But on my son - I HATE THEM.

Stupid stupid 19 year old with a full sleeve on his arm. I think he looks pathetic. Just following the herd. Hate them on him. Does he know how much I hate them? No. But he knows I'm not keen on them.

I reflect a lot about why it distresses me so much. But I can't come to a conclusion.

JuliansTrousers · 12/11/2023 15:51

While I've seen a few tattoos that really suit the 'wearer' and some that are really beautifully done even though they don't look great on the person.
The vast majority of them look just look a bit naff to me, especially when you see the fashion ones. Too many of them can look like the person is grubby. David Beckham and Robbie Williams for example look IMO as though they need a scrub.
One of my DC has a few tattoos. They're generally hidden by clothing but when I have seen them they just look really jarring although I haven't told DC that.
I came very close to getting a tattoo in my late teens and am so glad now that I didn't. My friend who did really regrets hers.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 12/11/2023 15:51

HippidyHop, it was about covering up 'an unfortunate birthmark', wasn't it? What's the difference? There would absolutely be stigma and censure to anybody expressing a negative viewpoint about a birthmark/scar - not so about tattoos.

Either way, your view is that any non-according opinion is 'judgemental bullshit'. My view is that if you (general) don't seek validation/opinions then most people are adroit enough to keep these to themselves and you'd be none the wiser.

Ahhh really Rampantivy? Then I apologise @Stroopwaffels 🙈😂. That will teach me to skim read a thread!!

Maddy70 · 12/11/2023 15:53

I have tattoos. But I do think altering your appearance forever is just daft.
I loved my perm in the 80s. Wouldn't want to have it now.

I actually like mine but hey aren't visible unless I'm wearing a bikini

What are you on about? Do I think it’s fucking judgemental for someone to feel they have to figure out if someone has an unfortunate birthmark or not? Yeah I do and I think it says a lot about them. I didn’t seek that opinion, that person just came out with it and in my opinion it is judgemental bullshit.

Baffledandalarmed · 12/11/2023 16:03

I don't mind them, but I think they should be something that mens something to whoever gets them. Tattooes for tattoo sake are just a bit chavvy.

BUT what I HATE are Native American tattoos/native African tattoo designs etc. on white middle class people. REALLY angers me.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 12/11/2023 16:04

I think it says more about you, Hippidyhop; you're aggressive about something that most people absolutely do not give a fig about, never mind bothering you with any opinion about it.

I don't like tattoos, not any. I almost never pass comment and you'd never know. The only opinion I ever give is fake, if it's somebody I really like, I give a positive comment about the artwork as they're so obviously proud. I do that because they care about what I think and I care about them enough to lie.

It is only people with tattoos who get upset about other people's views on them. That I really don't understand; stop asking and you won't get comments.

PlaidCushionProductions · 12/11/2023 16:04

You can pinpoint someone’s age by their tattoos and what was in fashion. For me it’d be like wearing an outfit forever, one that I thought was a good look when I was in my teens, twenties, thirties etc. To me Beckham style tattoos just look like toddlers have scribbled on them in blue marker.

EffinMagicFairy · 12/11/2023 16:08

Nothing more aging in my opinion, and may look ok on taut skin, but like everything fashions change and we get older and wrinkly.

For the third time, I’m not talking about tattoos. I haven’t even mentioned tattoos. I didn’t ask anyone for their opinion on tattoos I didn’t comment on tattoos. I haven’t said I have tattoos. I haven’t mentioned tattoos. You’re not understanding what I’m saying and attacking me. So if you can’t engage properly, don’t weigh in.

fuckssaaaaake · 12/11/2023 16:08

I couldn't give a flying fuck what other people think of my appearance, tattoos included. Anyone who has a strong opinion on other peoples bodies need to get out more

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 12/11/2023 16:10

Hippidy, feel free to ignore my posts, I'm done engaging with you, but I'll post where and what I want to.
