If you don't like tattoos

Can you say why?

I'm fed up of people who think those with tattoos are rough arsed bikers, thick or common.

OP posts:
Tighginn · 12/11/2023 16:11

They are never that good, always wonky, obvious mistakes. I never like anything long enough to commit to one, even your favourite clothing, gets old and is relegated after a while.

ThePoshUns · 12/11/2023 16:13

I have never looked at one and thought it looked nice or good.
When I see good looking young people girls in particular plastered in them I feel sad that they've chosen to deface themselves .

HippidyHop, it was about covering up 'an unfortunate birthmark', wasn't it? What's the difference? There would absolutely be stigma and censure to anybody expressing a negative viewpoint about a birthmark/scar - not so about tattoos.

Either way, your view is that any non-according opinion is 'judgemental bullshit'. My view is that if you (general) don't seek validation/opinions then most people are adroit enough to keep these to themselves and you'd be none the wiser.

It wasn't about covering a birthmark though

It was a post saying that tattoos are really ugly, and then saying from a distance it's difficult to tell if someone has a tattoo or "an unfortunate birthmark"

By comparing tattoos to birthmarks right after calling a tattoo really ugly, it then implies that birthmarks are really ugly which is quite a nasty thing to say tbh

Hippidy, feel free to ignore my posts, I'm done engaging with you, but I'll post where and what I want to.

And so will I? You’re the one who a)misread my post then b) tried to argue with me and is now c) acting like you’re above it. You got it wrong. Engage all you want but before you try and have a go at someone, at least make sure you’re talking about the right thing.

Isthisreasonable · 12/11/2023 16:15

The art work is often pretty naff
They don't age well - both the styles and as skin gets less elastic
It is rarely an improvement on natural skin
It marks you out as a sheep
Visible tats clash/distract the eye from whatever you're wearing which is a shame
Your personal style naturally evolves and your tats potentially will clash with your current style

But if you like them, knock yourself out

ladeluge · 12/11/2023 16:16

It is rare to see tattoos that actually look nice. I have never seen one and said "oh I must go and get one of those, they are gorgeous". Nope, but it is an individual's choice.

I actually shudder at the permanence of them. I probably would get one if I thought it would be temporary, but not a chance if it would be there forever!

Thank you, I think you articulated better than I did. It also annoyed me that someone feels like they have to spend time ‘working out if it’s an unsightly birthmark’. Who cares? Birthmarks can be different and in obvious places but to feel like you have a right to stare at someone and work out if they have a birthmark is so obnoxious to me. Just mind your own damned business!

fuckssaaaaake · 12/11/2023 16:08

I couldn't give a flying fuck what other people think of my appearance, tattoos included. Anyone who has a strong opinion on other peoples bodies need to get out more

OP specifically asked people to explain why they didn’t like tattoos. If you “don’t give a flying fuck what other people think” , then perhaps this isn’t the thread for you!

MrsMarzetti · 12/11/2023 16:18

My Nephew is a tattoo artist, he is very talented but i still don't like them. Many of todays styles of just a black outline look like you have let a child draw on you with a sharpie, so childish. Why do people with visible tattoos get upset if you look at them ? You tattoo your face and people are going to look and judge.

underneaththeash · 12/11/2023 16:18

Many of them are really badly drawn - no-one likes to see crap art.
It's also that they represent poor judgement, that tattoo if going to fade over time and your skin will sag it will look even worse that it already does.

YesItsMeYesItsMe · 12/11/2023 16:20

A mum on the school run has pennywise tattooed on her calf (massive full-calf tat), and wears pedal pushers (yes) in all weathers to fully show it off. Genuinely scary for these little reception kids 😂!! And also what was the thought process there for that tat? I don’t like pennywise, therefore I don’t like a pennywise tattoo, that’s my reasoning.

Q2C4 · 12/11/2023 16:21

I don't like them as I think they generally look ugly and fade over time even if they were colourful to start with. They look grubby / dirty. I also don't understand how anyone can decide they want a particular pattern etched into them forever. How do you go about choosing the pattern? How can you know you will still like it in 50 years' time?

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 12/11/2023 16:21

I don't morally judge people for having tattoos, or think they are 'rough or thick or common', but I would never have one myself and don't think the majority of them look good. Some of them are poorly done and some are just unappealing designs, silly slogans or awful sentimental bollocks. Occasionally I see one and think it's aesthetically a nice design. I just wouldn't want it on my skin!

I have a horror themed tattoo on my leg with Jason, Freddy and a couple of others. I wouldn't wear pedal pushers in all weathers though 😆

My thought process is I love horror films and I wanted it basically!

People do notice 'marks' on other people. I've noticed what I thought was an enormous bruise on somebody in the pool. When they got closer I realised it was a tattoo.

I think it's unrealistic to expect people not to notice marks on other people but at the same time, it's not unreasonable to expect people not to comment and surely, most don't, whatever they privately think?

I personally don't see any correlation between birthmarks and tattoos; one is something you're born with, the other is elective. Neither need to be commented on.

glitterfinder · 12/11/2023 16:27

I think people can do what they like with their bodies. I have seen some tattoos that are beautiful works of art in their own right and suit their owners as well as having meaning to them.
I think Henna tattoos done for traditional/cultural reasons are gorgeous and I have seen a fabulous nipple tattooed on a friend who had reconstruction after a mastectomy for breast cancer.
Aside from the above, I don't like them because I think they're generally tacky. The generic trendy-today ones date people. They fade and smudge and then look dirty. What might be a fun design at twenty looks stupid at forty. You'd be hard pushed to find any tattoos that look classy even if the person might be.

If you agree with me that they shouldn’t be commented on then why have you had a go at me?

KaarijasBowlCut · 12/11/2023 16:32

I don't like the idea of having something forever - if I'd been asked to choose something as insignificant as a necklace I had to wear every day for the rest of my life, I know I wouldn't always be happy with the decision I'd made, however appealing it seemed to me at the time.

If DH had tattoos all over his chest like many people do these days (he has none, nor do I), it would be like an item of clothing he could never remove and I prefer bare flesh!

ButDaddyILoveHim · 12/11/2023 16:32

Obviously you can do what you like with your own body but...I cannot for the life of me understand why you would do that to yourself. I can guarantee you that 99% of people who see it think it looks fucking awful.

onlyconnect · 12/11/2023 16:32

For me it's the permanence of them. I just can't see how anyone can decide how they want to look from now on until they die. People don't do it with anything else- like choose a pair of jeans and stick to the same style, or commit to a hairstyle. I just sort of can't believe that people do it.
Young people having them just makes me think they haven't got the maturity to decide by definition. If they understand permanence, why not wait a few years?
I know that it's none of my business and not up to me. Of course I accept that fully. I just have an opinion about it.

Exactly. Hence why a post calling birthmarks "unfortunate" and comparing them to something the poster thinks is "really ugly" is quite unreasonable.

But loads of people do that with a wedding or engagement ring all the time and the assumption at least is "until death"

HRTQueen · 12/11/2023 16:36

Sounds so self indigent to ask why something like my teenage son would ask

most people will give passing thought on what they see

Oh now, I wouldn't say 99%. Perhaps around 80%? 😆

I don't care if people think it looks awful, I didn't get it for other people!

RandomUsernameHere · 12/11/2023 16:37

I just don't like the look of them, I can't tell you why. Different people like different things. I certainly don't associate them with "bikers, thick or common" people though.
