If you don't like tattoos

Can you say why?

I'm fed up of people who think those with tattoos are rough arsed bikers, thick or common.

Drawings on skin is why I like them. I like beautiful drawings, I like them hanging in my house and I like having one on my body. Nobody else can really see it, it's for me. My children like to trace their fingers around it or colour it in sometimes. I much prefer it to my stretch marks, c section scar, burst veins, burn scar and all the other permanent things adorning my body.

I really, really don't understand why people have something that can't be changed. It becomes part of their 'history' and they have to live with it, so for me it would be like having to live with that awful haircut I had when I was 15. Why not have a painting, item of jewellery, etc?
It's a fashion statement today, so presumably it'll fall out of favour - if parents have them, the kids won't?
Re the 'social scale' thing - on holiday in France I took the dch to a swimming pool and I sat on the side, watching. Half the people had tattoos, and I realised that they all belonged to Brits and the French didn't have any (that I could see). French so much more effortlessly stylish than the Brits in general, so why would they want to draw on their skin?

My French friend (but she lives in London) has a huge tattoo.

TheMurderousGoose · 14/11/2023 09:24

According to this chart the Italians are the most tattooed Europeans, and the French aren’t too far behind the UK.

But maybe people in the UK people are more likely to go in for statement tattoos like sleeves, giving the impression they’re the most heavily tattooed?

Being "effortlessly stylish" doesn't automatically make someone a better person. That's all very superficial. Personally I don't aspire to be effortlessly stylish, I aspire to be kind, empathetic, helpful, etc.

Absolutely you are right that being a good person is more important than your choices about e.g what clothes you wear, and getting tattoos. The problem is that we, humans and animals, are programmed to constantly judge from looks alone - we have to make judgements about our personal safety, how to react to someone, etc. You can see on here that tattoos are divisive. Unfortunately people will be judged on their appearance and choices until we get the chance to know them as a person.

coollam · 14/11/2023 15:16

Honestly? I suppose I just think skin on its own is much more beautiful. I've known a few people quite well with a lot of tattoos and they all had issues and were pretty unstable, lived chaotic lives and used the tattoos as a way of making up for a lack within themselves. Either that or they are not very bright and just act impulsively or felt they needed tattoos to portray a certain kind of persona. I know not everyone who has tattoos is like that but those I've known with a lot of ink are.

One or two discreet tattoos I probably wouldn't relate to such deficiencies and ultimately it is up to other people what they do to themselves my opinion is just that, my opinion which I keep to myself unless specifically asked as I have been now.

I think some of the work of the tattoo artists is impressive but not as a permeant mark on your skin and to be honest most tattoos are not impressive at all. I've seen too many "Only God can Judge Me" or "Justify Your Existence" in large black gothic script to think there is anything special or deep about the people they adorn.

I think no tattoos is classier, more beautiful, natural and more wholesome appearing. Sure people can express themselves with fashions, hair colours and styles, make up and so on but all of that is transient and can change back to natural if they want. Tattoos, cosmetic surgery and the like are all pretty much permanent.

So I don't like them but if you do it doesn't matter what I think.

I'm going to get a pasting for this but I went to a wedding where the bride had a huge tattoo across her back and wore a backless wedding dress. I'm trying to say it's none of my business but it was not my taste at all. Good for her and all that and she's a nice person but I thought it looked dreadful. Just my opinion and your milage may differ but I didn't get the beauty of it.

Why, because she is a woman, does there have to be beauty? She doesn't own anyone beautiful

This just assumes that any woman adorning her body in some way - makeup, cosmetic surgery, lip fillers, piercings etc etc is doing it to be beautiful, like that can be the only aim.

Maybe she thinks it makes her look fierce, or strong, or bold, or she just flipping well likes the picture. Maybe beauty isn't her main aim. Maybe she wants to be dreadful in a world where pretty is demanded from women, maybe dreadful is her form of rebellion against that.

RecoveringBorderline · 14/11/2023 21:17

They're just not my thing and I wouldn't get one myself. However, I believe it's wrong to judge people by if they have a tattoo(s) or not. I know some lovely inked people.

bippityboppity87 · 14/11/2023 21:21

@Beezknees the mind boggles. Plenty of successful working class people with clutch pearling god forbid tattoos. Get a grip

Total bullshit. My dad was the chief of psychiatry at his hospital in the States and he mentioned on numerous occasions how many new incoming residents had sleeves. He mentioned this to us because my brother and I both have a lot of tattoos. My husband is also heavily tattooed. We all have good jobs and make a lot of money. While my husband does come from a more common background, my brother and I both came from an incredibly wealthy upbringing, ie we will both get millions in inheritance. The only people "high on the social scale" who couldn't conceive of having tattoos are 80 year old white people. So either you are an 80 year old white person or are just severely out of touch with reality.

Not at all. Very few people where I live - nice town near London have tattoos, thankfully.
A few have the that smudge when you get them removed, luckily most people are too intelligent.

tillyandmilly · 14/11/2023 22:27

would never comment on people having them but personally I dislike them -

SinnerBoy · 14/11/2023 22:34

Many years ago, I was having some regular tattoo sessions in Newcastle and one of the customers was a Crown Court judge. What a shame such a thicko got into such a position, eh?

MissBattleaxe · 14/11/2023 23:01

@Neitheronethingnortheother wow. Massive reaction there. I just didn't think it looked nice. Nothing to do with feminism or me policing anyone. Just because I don't like a painting doesn't mean people shouldn't paint.

Can you explain how you giving your opinion is fine and me giving mine is a "massive reaction"

Also if you could explain where I said you specifically were policing anything?

I fully agree. Just don't think it looks nice. Surely can't force myself to think it does l? But it's not like I'd go upto a person with a tattoo and actually say so!

quivers · 15/11/2023 00:59

They aren't to my taste and I wouldn't want any, but I do admire the artwork of skilled tattooists. Some of them are amazingly talented.

I'm going back a long way now, but when I was a child, tattoos were something that people associated with sailors in the Navy.

RoseMartha · 15/11/2023 01:07

I dont like them. I know some people with them. I know people without them.
It is up to a person whether they have them or not. It doesn't matter if I like them or not, as that is that person's choice.

DeeCeeCherry · 15/11/2023 10:04

I rarely see a tattoo that looks good. I would'nt have one myself, why mark your skin? Looks rubbish when you grow older with sagging skin too. However DP has several, they're not really visible so I don't care. If he had one on his face or neck it would be a no-no for me. Aside from that its live and let live, surely.

NeedToChangeName · 10/01/2024 14:21

I prefer the look of unblemished / natural skin

And worry that, when tattoos go out of fashion (as I expect they will), then people will regret them. If you want to stand out, better to use a hairstyle or outfit ie temporary

Tartantatooes · 10/01/2024 14:43

Some of them are works of art . I don't like crude homemade looking ones . I don't like them on hands necks and faces .

Bluevelvetsofa · 10/01/2024 14:45

I prefer the look of natural skin.

I think some small tattoos look very attractive, but one of the things I don’t like, or understand, is the need to keep adding to them, so the original art is obscured and can become muddy looking. It feels a bit like having Botox or filler, where the person feels the need to keep getting more and more.

It doesn’t make me dislike a person, or judge what they do, but I think it’s a shame when an adornment ends up totally covering the skin.

Comedycook · 10/01/2024 14:46

I absolutely hate tattoos. I think they look absolutely vile. I mean I don't care whether someone has them or not as it makes no difference to my life...but I still think they look awful. What I think looks especially hideous is a bride with a strapless dress and a tattoo on show...

I simply don't like them in general. To me they can be attractive on slim young men (Harry Styles for example) but that's about it and even then I would think the man would look better without them. Its just taste I am surprised the need to question it, or indeed defend it.

I also don't like fake eyelashes, fake tan, blonde hair that looks dyed, long nails, very fitted clothes on men esp those jeans / jegging things that are in and especially I hate those skin toned shorts with a bum crack that young girls wear now. I dont like sports clothes for every day wear. I also don't like monochrome or very bright colours. I love jewellery especially dangly earrings, I like most piercings, I like eye make up but not strong brows, I like bold colours or paler patterns, I love floral, I like stripes but not spots etc etc. It's personal taste, that's all. It doesn't mean anything.

I doubt it, they've been around for thousands of years!
