Ugh. That attitude you have of seeing him simply as a victim is actually one that the US moved on from a long, long time ago. It's really odd to encounter people in the UK who bleat "but he's sick" like that's the end of the conversation. Addiction becomes an illness but addicts are not helpless victims. It starts as a choice. Anyone who becomes an addict now knows exactly what they're doing.

This guy was not someone who was overwhelmed with family and work responsibilities and had no access to information or resources. People in his circles knew very well (even back in the 1990s) the dangers of prescription medication and other drugs. There was a well-established rehab culture and he could have afforded any amount of help.

Celebrating someone who had every privilege in life and yet was selfish and did nothing but feed his addictions is odd and troubling to see. I'd feel like a failure as a parent if I raised someone like that. I've said my piece though and if you don't want to hear it, that's your decision. Like I said, I get that people are sad he's gone because he was a large part of some people's youth.

I'm not entirely sure you understand what addiction is if that's what you think.

As a family we watch Friends all the time, we dip in and out when there's nothing else on, we know all the jokes and they're still funny. It's sad news.

people in their twenties have also discovered Friends,
many generations will have watched and enjoyed friends,
i was in my 30s when i started watching friends, in the late 90s

Yeah of course people from all generations have loved Friends. I just think it hits a bit differently when you grew up watching it ever Friday night, everyone was saying the catchphrases at school and so on.

It’s a sad day, he was amazing on friends but god knows he had his struggles, I hope he’s at peace now. Thoughts with his poor parents 🕊️

Reported for stating facts ?

What is the world coming to hey !

There’s stating facts in a respectful and empathetic way, given the circumstances. And then there’s your post. Perry was a gifted actor and comedian, but like so many others in that profession, struggled for years with alcohol and drug addiction. Your post dismisses the person he actually was and reduces him to a statistic. Sad.

Absolutely. There is no need to kick him now. Alcohol and drug addiction is very complex especially for those in Hollywood. He spent millions on trying to get better.

God rest him.

When a member of the gang that no one wants to be a member of passes, regardless of circumstances, it is always sad. I’ll remember him as someone that tried to spread awareness of addiction.

@Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot same, I cry every single time, I imagine it will be even worse now.

I think he was a wonderful actor, one of the funniest, just natural comedic timing as well as being so handsome.

I know on MN it can be frowned upon to have any feelings about someone you don't know passing away but he was a big part of many peoples lives/growing up for 10 years plus ever since, I still watch Friends ever day and laugh and cry at it.

RIP Matthew Perry, you were one of a kind.

Lentilweaver · 29/10/2023 08:46

I felt a similar way when Robin Williams passed. Yes, only an "overpaid" actor. But a wonderful one who touched many. I am not devastated. But I am sad about it.

The arts are just as important as any other field, in these dark times.

Devastated? I'm devastated over my mums imminent death. I'm sorry for this guy and his family but sorry you didn't know him. How can you be "absolutely devastated" as in severe overwhelming grief?

You clearly have no idea of how addiction works if this is what you really think. And you also clearly haven’t read his book, otherwise you would know how his addiction came about, how it almost killed him, and how hard he worked at trying to beat it. He also tried to help other addicts while in rehab/recovery. Unfortunately access to information doesn’t stop addiction, and for some, all the money and privilege in the world is useless trying to overcome it. They are driven by things only understood by other addicts. The man has just died. Your post is disrespectful, unpleasantly judgemental, and unnecessary. So many people just waiting to put the boot in.

I think people can feel anything they want to. We fortunately don't live in a country where our feelings are controlled. Thank heavens!

Why be so rude?

Some people are deeply affected by celebs deaths, especially if they have been someone who is a big part of their lives, even if they’ve never met in person.

I’m very neutral when people die, especially people I don’t know. Yes it’s sad but death is a part of life.
But there was only 1 celeb that I was really devastated by and that was because he was my idol for 20+ years.

There we’re multiple people ‘devastated’ about the tree that was cut down, and that was literally just a tree.

People have the right to feel how they feel.
We don’t need to feel the same way but it’s not fair to invalidate someone else’s feelings.

So sorry about your mum, but this is just a figure of speech. Maybe this thread is triggering for your circumstances.💐

He said he spent millions on trying to get clean / sober.

$9m dollars apparently.
it is really sad - waste of a talented life.

I loved this guy, my favourite Friends character

I was only watching him on Friday night on YouTube

Very sad

Freshair1 · 29/10/2023 08:58

What are the recent Instagram posts about? Batman?

43ontherocksporfavor · 29/10/2023 09:00

Very sad to wake up to this news. His Friends character is very familiar to us as a family, probably my favourite and it was my adult DD that text me the news this morning. Im 52 and watched it when it was first shown over here in U.K. I think it was Friday night. DDs watched it in their teens and still do. We often have it on Comedy Central and the jokes never get old for me. A sad loss. Rest in peace.

Legendairy · 29/10/2023 09:01

Unbelievable in 2023 that people still have such a lack of understanding about addiction. I thought we had moved on from this old fashioned attitude. Same people who probably think kids with ADHD just need to be parented properly.

We have more than one family member with addiction and don't get me wrong, there are times we feel angry and resentful towards them when they upset us, and feel like they are selfish at times but we know deep down they would not choose this, they are just too unwell to get better.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 29/10/2023 09:01
