The media are quick to say no drugs because the powers up don't want anything affecting the Friends brand

Surely the reason they're quick to say no drugs is because it would have been the first assumption many would have made. Many people would have thought "Matthew Perry died? I wonder if it was an overdose." So by saying that, the press are answering that question.

Not much point trying to protect the friends brand from his drug use - he's been extremely open about it, including his use while on friends.

@Mytattooisbiggerthanyours is quoting something Matthew Perry said!

I think it was quite widely reported at the time and he did issue quite a public apology.

I haven’t read the book either so not sure if it’s mentioned in there.

There was a well-established rehab culture and he could have afforded any amount of help.

And rehab culture doesn’t work, beyond physical detox. The thing that’s been proven best to work is long term ongoing support and care in the community. Which is hard when there’s a massive level of shame and blame attached to addiction. I think this is another reason people feel it when a rich or famous person comes to harm through addiction. Because of views on this thread that if you have enough money you should be able to cure yourself and they decided to carry on.

Anyway it’s all speculation. As far as anyone knew he was sober when he died.

Zonder · 29/10/2023 08:18

Has anyone here read his book? Can anyone explain the last Batman chapter and if it seems relevant to his recent Instagram posts?

IvorTheEngineDriver · 29/10/2023 08:19

Sad news. I thought he was very good in The West Wing (Couldn't stand Friends. Always wanted to slap Phoebe).

Dery · 29/10/2023 08:20

This is so sad. I have read his book and it opens with him saying it’s amazing he’s alive and when you read the book that’s certainly the feeling you get. He was horribly ravaged by addiction and made loads of attempts to beat it. Such a shame.

Zonder · 29/10/2023 08:20

He said he spent millions on trying to get clean / sober.

Dreamymama · 29/10/2023 08:20

This is so so sad, I was just watching friends last night and laughing at his jokes. Gone to soon. 💔💔

MyCircumference · 29/10/2023 08:22

he did apologise for the keanu reeves comment, he said he picked the name out of the air

Dery · 29/10/2023 08:22

@SofiYol - yes, he addresses the Keane Reeves comment in his book.

MissChanandlerB0NG · 29/10/2023 08:24

I'm so upset. Absolutely gutted

RudolphTheRedNosedSpaniel · 29/10/2023 08:26

So sad.

RunningAndSinging · 29/10/2023 08:27

I have read his book and enjoyed Friends and am really sad but not surprised because he had put his body through so much.

When he was writing the book he was sober and doing what he could to help other people become and stay sober. He had an addiction which look over his life. He was a good and funny man. It is so sad.

ShirleyPhallus · 29/10/2023 08:27

MN is a fucking horrible place sometimes. Some posters feel very sad about his death, and that’s absolutely fine, it doesn’t need this over-competitive “who???” / “never heard of him” / “he’s just an overpaid actor” / “it’s not sad he’s an addict” / “how can you be sad about someone you don’t know”

so pathetic, it isn’t up to you to police anyone else’s feelings fgs

He needed a better book editor. One who could have substituted “axe murderers” or something.

I must be missing something. He was just an actor and a very well-paid one at that !. Bizarre reaction from some ppl.

I think it's probably people of a certain age, around 40, who grew up watching friends. It was so long running and popular, with so many catchphrases, it became part of our psyche.

MyCircumference · 29/10/2023 08:32

people in their twenties have also discovered Friends,
many generations will have watched and enjoyed friends,
i was in my 30s when i started watching friends, in the late 90s

VisaWoes · 29/10/2023 08:33

Yes, my 22yo is obsessed with Friends.

user1471538283 · 29/10/2023 08:33

He was my favourite Friend. He struggled with addiction for so long but I really hoped he'd turn it around and become like Robin Williams (even though we lost him too soon as well).

I had visions of him doing campaigns against all addictions.

I hope he was sober at the end because he wanted it so much.

xogossipgirlxo · 29/10/2023 08:33

I’m gutted. This is the end of an era in popculture for me. Very sad news

Lentilweaver · 29/10/2023 08:35

I am sad. about his passing. Yes, an actual genocide is happening, but I can still feel sad.

He was always my favourite Friend, and I think he had incredible comic timing. In the reunion last year, he looked ill and lonely. I think he said something like " nobody calls me", and tried to make a joke of it, but it was apparent he was alone.

EvelynKatie · 29/10/2023 08:35

Absolutely gutted. Friends got me through some very tough times and Matthew Perry did such a good job of playing Chandler. RIP Matt.

Lentilweaver · 29/10/2023 08:36

Correction: the reunion was 2021.
