Awful news. I didn't realise he was so young.

Soubriquet · 29/10/2023 07:56

This is so sad I'm actually devastated 😭 so many memories watching Chandler growing up

decionsdecisions62 · 29/10/2023 07:57

His Batman obsession was quite strange and the links to Batman in this last week on instagram. A tormented soul.

What an odd post. I’ve never heard of him being labelled as unpleasant to women or anyone for that matter. There’s no suggestion he was out partying as a rich kid taking recreational drugs. He became addicted to a prescription opioid like millions of other Americans. Stop trying to blame people with addiction. It’s so wrong to frame addictions this way. I thought given the opioid crisis in the US people were beginning to view addicts differently. Sadly it can affect anyone at any age from any background. Whatever his cause of death it’s devastating for his friends and family.

Ugh. That attitude you have of seeing him simply as a victim is actually one that the US moved on from a long, long time ago. It's really odd to encounter people in the UK who bleat "but he's sick" like that's the end of the conversation. Addiction becomes an illness but addicts are not helpless victims. It starts as a choice. Anyone who becomes an addict now knows exactly what they're doing.

This guy was not someone who was overwhelmed with family and work responsibilities and had no access to information or resources. People in his circles knew very well (even back in the 1990s) the dangers of prescription medication and other drugs. There was a well-established rehab culture and he could have afforded any amount of help.

Celebrating someone who had every privilege in life and yet was selfish and did nothing but feed his addictions is odd and troubling to see. I'd feel like a failure as a parent if I raised someone like that. I've said my piece though and if you don't want to hear it, that's your decision. Like I said, I get that people are sad he's gone because he was a large part of some people's youth.

He’s been a dead man walking for a long time now. I know I sound callous but I felt extremely sorry for him and I hope he is finally in peace.

MyCircumference · 29/10/2023 08:02

i agree that the reunion brought it home how he had changed so to read of his death is not a surprise
he was the best friend though in Chandler Bing rip

You said it better than I did. Just seems like a wasted, pointless existence and a relief for him it's over. It certainly has inspired me to get off the sofa and go and get some exercise.

FartNRoses · 29/10/2023 08:03

Incredibly sad for Matthew Perry and an end of an era for Chandler Bing. The only friends character who would ad-lib throughout the series and get away with it.
A true screen legend.
RIP MY Friend.

OdeToBarney · 29/10/2023 08:05

Like many others, friends has got me through some tough times in my life. Breakups, recovering from ivf side effects while convinced I would lose my baby, a recent distressing work matter. If ever I can't sleep or I'm upset, I put friends on Netflix, and the world seems slightly better.

Matthew Perry's wit and comic timing was second to none. I'm gutted this morning. 😢 RIP Chandler

It's awful isn't it? So sad. 💔

He was the crush of many girls as Chandler, me included.

RIP Matthew 💜

pink970 · 29/10/2023 08:08

I wonder what's the all the Batman references though in his last few Instagram posts

Mytattooisbiggerthanyours · 29/10/2023 08:08

Why is it that the original thinkers like River Phoenix and Heath Ledger die, but Keanu Reeves still walks among us?

User98866 · 29/10/2023 08:10

It starts as a choice. Anyone who becomes an addict now knows exactly what they're doing.

I don’t give a toss what the US thinks. Look at their streets, they are hardly at the forefront in the fight with addiction. The above may be the case for people willingly taking illegal drugs recreationally. Million of Americans like Perry became addicted to prescription drugs. Many were told they weren’t addictive. It’s absolutely not their fault. I always admired him talking so openly about his struggles. There are many celebrities in the same boat that would never talking publicly. Mainly because of idea of what an ‘addict’ is that’s so prevalent. Unless you’re an addiction expert or have personal experience I don’t see the need to make comments like you have. It’s very sad whether he died of his addiction or something else.

MorgainLeFay · 29/10/2023 08:10

I must be missing something. He was just an actor and a very well-paid one at that !. Bizarre reaction from some ppl.

His parents did fail him. That’s what created the horrible emptiness inside him that he could never fill but attempted to with drugs.

Dibbydoos · 29/10/2023 08:11

Wow what a high opinion you have of your values and self.

Noone chooses to get addicted, they just fall into it and even if you think he had choices, he clearly didn't.

We don't all live by your yard stick ffs. Find some empathy in your closed and judgemental mind!

I think that’s a bit harsh about keanu? Are you saying he should be dead. He’s meant to be one of the nicest guys in Hollywood.

plus what exactly did Heath or River do which made them “free thinkers”. I see no evidence of them being any different to any other actor. But of course they died young so it’s become very fashionable to spout that sort of stuff about them.

HeadAgainstWall0923 · 29/10/2023 08:12

Very sad news to wake up to.

I grieve for the humour and happiness he bought to a lot of people, including myself, for his wonderful portrayal of Chandler Bing. Such an incredible and intelligent actor, he was by far my favourite.

I do not know him as a man and I have never read his memoir and so I can’t comment on his character but I am thinking of all his friends and family who grieve him for the person he was to them and the person they’ve lost.

RIP Matthew.

@Mytattooisbiggerthanyours is quoting something Matthew Perry said!

Knitgoodwoman · 29/10/2023 08:13

When famous people die, I sometimes don’t care, but I don’t go on those posts saying I don’t care. I appreciate different people mean different things to different people.

Why come on here and say you don’t care? Just walk on by and have some compassion.
Matthew Perry and friends got me through some tough times during an abusive childhood.
I’m allowed to feel sad about someone dying. So bizarre when people feel the need to dismiss other’s feelings.

WickWood · 29/10/2023 08:13
