The Cranberries post on instagram IMHO implied he knew how he was going to go.

I don't understand. The one where he said it was all he had eaten and some cranberries were placed on a table?

How are people reading so much into that? If I have the right one. I'm not being rude, but I'm not seeing the connection.

catnipevergreen · 29/10/2023 12:38

@OopsaDazy thanks for telling me how to feel. Stop being a twat FFS.

@excelledyourself Because the lead singer of The Cranberries accidentally drowned after drug use.

HurdyGurdy19 · 29/10/2023 12:44

I'm obviously being dim, but I don't get the reference/connection to Batman? Can someone explain please?

I know that part. But I still don't get that that post was foretelling his death.

Batman was the name of ‘the last chapter’ quite literally, in his book.

@Goodornot because I am! I've lost several family members in the last year and I can't get home to the UK at the moment so I fully understand grief.
It's posts like yours and a previous post that make me remember why I originally came off Mumsnet a few years ago. Why do you feel it's necessary to say anything like this or feel like you go police everyone's feelings ?? Just because this person who has died isn't real to me doesn't mean I can't be upset about it. Stop gatekeeping people's emotions ffs

@excelledyourself OK. I think it's too much of a coincidence and I'm not alone in thinking that. At the very least he thought of the possibility that that's how he might happen to go.

I think it's sad. My kids grew up with Friends and although initially I shunned it I really enjoyed it when I watched it eventually. Matt Perry was so funny in it and seemed so witty in interviews. I thought he was better in Studio 60 a more serious role for him. I also read his biography where he was so candid about his struggles with addiction. I don't know how he died but he will be missed.

Same , I liked him in 17 again.
It is sad.

I don’t know but as well as the cranberry post he posted under it something like “do you know what I’m trying to tell you”. Which kind of doesn’t fit with an innocuous post about cranberries. Plus who actually only eats three cranberries in a day?

The ironic thing is that Friends DID help people as this thread shows.

absolutely

JenniferBooth · 29/10/2023 13:23

So sad to hear this RIP Mathew, Flowers

There is a Thanksgiving episode of Friends (the one with Christina Applegate in) where they are all arguing over who would get baby Emma if Ross and/or Rachel died Rachel and her sister have a fight and a plate from the wedding crockery gets broken. Later Chandler tips the whole lot over and then quips "oh guess i will be the one who dies first"

porridgeisbae · 29/10/2023 13:31

@VisaWoes I think a lot of us have morbid thoughts sometimes and I can easily see that a recurrent addict who had a hot tub could have a thought that that's how he might go- whether he was currently using or not. And cranberries is so specific a food.

That last week of posts has cryptic Britney's Insta vibes or something, to the extent plenty of people were already posting concerned comments.

Thank you. So nothing to do with the Batman character/movies (which I've not seen, so didn't know if I was missing a connection)

Friends was my early twenties to me. And My girls grew up on friends and we still
Watch it now if we want a bit of comfort TV. This is really sad news, especially as he seemed to have turned a corner lately with his addictions, and opening his sober house etc.
I read somewhere that he once said he wanted his legacy to be that people remembered him as 'a nice guy', and that's exactly what it will be I think.

Starrystarryfight · 29/10/2023 13:41

If those insta posts had come from a friend of mine, especially one who I knew had struggled with mental health and addiction, I wouldn’t be leaving them on their own, especially not near a hot tub.
I don’t understand why no one intervened?

Bluewaterloo · 29/10/2023 13:47

This is sad news. It's hard to pick a favourite Friends character but he would be one of my favourites. It's sad but I am not devastasted and I am somewhat unmoved by this news and it's washing over me.

His character in friends was probably the most sarcastic TV character ever. Friends was able to turn sarcasm into humour. I find in real life when someone is sarcastic, there can be an element of bitter and abuse in it. There's something not right in the way some people are sarcastic. They are not funny. They are often rude.

i think he ‘daftly’ loved loved all the Batman movies but it was def the last chapter of his book. His last few Instagram posts were quite upsetting. Asking did anyone know what he was trying to say, posted cranberries… singer drowned, sent out the Batman sign which is apparently an SOS, posted a pic of himself in the jacuzzi he died in saying that apparently jacuzzis make you happy (I’m misquoting giving the gist) felt to me like the realisation that many decided addicts come to…. It’s too painful to live. That’s just what it felt like to me . X

I suppose we can only wait for an inquest or something. Sad

Or... we can mourn his passing and celebrate his life in whatever way suits us, and not be ghoulishly interested in the hows and whys of his death.

Intervened how? No one would die of it was as simple as that.

Livelovebehappy · 29/10/2023 14:32

It’s weird how some things can be like a punch in the stomach, when you wouldn’t expect it to. I heard this on the news this morning, and it knocked me sideways. Haven’t really seen anything else he’s been in on TV, apart from Friends, but the show is so iconic that it’s big news. I watched Friends when it originally started, so sat through all the episodes and series. Loved it. Every single character played their parts brilliantly. I never usually watch anything more than once, but I think I will be making an exception and will watch the series all over again.

Duckingella · 29/10/2023 14:33

Sounds as though he had a heart attack in his jacuzzi and drowned;how very tragically sad 😞
