What an awful thing to say about Keanu, he seems a true gent. I hooe he did apologise to Keanu.

He did publicly apologise, admitting it was a stupid thing to have written (and said he would remove it from future editions). You can google Matthew Perry and Keanu Reeves - all of the major newspapers talked about it.

"How do you drown in a hot tub?"

It's huge. His last insta post was a photo of him in it. In fact, his insta has gone from nothing all year to 7 very odd posts over the last week sending out bat signals and making cranberries references Sad asking followers if they know what he was trying to tell them.

Agreed. Making me wonder if he was back on drugs or perhaps having small strokes or something? Perhaps alcoholic dementia kicking in? So incredibly sad.

I have long been a huge fan of Friends and of his, from reading this and similar threads here and elsewhere I wonder if many people know he did a fair bit of writing on Friends too? And on other shows he was on? Incredibly talented and troubled man.

Had a huge crush on him and loved seeing him on chat shows etc too.

Similar to others my dd is also a huge fan, for both of us it's our go to comfort viewing.

Might watch some Friends or maybe one of his films later.

The ironic thing is that Friends DID help people as this thread shows.

Ilovepugs2017 · 29/10/2023 11:50

So sad about this news. He was one of my fave friends characters growing up alongside Phoebe. The world has lost an absolute legend 😢

Graphista · 29/10/2023 11:50

To those making idiotic, insensitive and as far as I can tell uninformed comments re addiction - aside from Matthew perry (who got addicted to legal drugs, addiction is a sneaky bastard and creeps up on you) please bear in mind that there will ALSO be on this thread people who are currently addicts, who like me have lost close loved ones to addiction.

HAVE SOME FUCKING EMPATHY AND TRY TO THINK BEFORE BLURTING OUT UTTER SHITE!

Personally I've never so much as smoked a cigarette but that doesn't mean I can judge or demean those who have and are struggling with addiction. I've seen up close and personal the devastation it wreaks, how incredibly hard it is for addicts to get and stay sober, it's not just a mental health issue certain drugs and addiction itself changes the brain/brain chemistry, it's an illness NOT a character flaw (which frankly applies more to those judging the addicts!)

Ugh. That attitude you have of seeing him simply as a victim is actually one that the US moved on from a long, long time ago. It's really odd to encounter people in the UK who bleat "but he's sick" like that's the end of the conversation. Addiction becomes an illness but addicts are not helpless victims. It starts as a choice. Anyone who becomes an addict now knows exactly what they're doing.

This guy was not someone who was overwhelmed with family and work responsibilities and had no access to information or resources. People in his circles knew very well (even back in the 1990s) the dangers of prescription medication and other drugs. There was a well-established rehab culture and he could have afforded any amount of help.

Celebrating someone who had every privilege in life and yet was selfish and did nothing but feed his addictions is odd and troubling to see. I'd feel like a failure as a parent if I raised someone like that. I've said my piece though and if you don't want to hear it, that's your decision. Like I said, I get that people are sad he's gone because he was a large part of some people's youth.

I could maybe see your point if it was a heroin or cocaine addiction. At some point he would have made a choice. But th8s was an opiate addiction from painkillers after he was prescribed them by a doctor following an injury. Maybe the doctors and pharmaceutical industries need to better at not prescribing such addictive stuff straight away or monitoring usage or explaining how addictive they are?

I was in hospital for a week after breaking my back and came out with a full on physical morphine addiction after only a week! I tried to stop taking it when I got home and felt awful, stomach cramps and sickness. I weaned myself off it over the next week. But my GP had happily put morphine tablets on a repeat prescription for me! Plus pregablin. I was like a zombie. It would have been very easy to carry on taking it all.

AutumnSolace · 29/10/2023 11:53

We all have flaws. Every one of us. Some more than others, and of course some people are truly awful. But no one has to be perfect in order to be missed and appreciated.

Yes and he spent approx $9 million on it so he did try. He would've probably gone into rehab again- but the addiction killed him before he went (I realise I'm assuming things by saying I assume he was out of it and accidentally drowned.)

Just leaving this here

It’s already been posted many times

VisaWoes · 29/10/2023 12:03

I also didn’t know about the Perry house, seems like he did also do a lot of good.

FMLWTF · 29/10/2023 12:08

It’s really knocked me sideways in a way that celebrity deaths don’t usually. I know it’s sounds trite and clichéd but Friends was a huge part of my life too (like everyone else, I know, nothing original there). It makes me sad to think that his death means it really is permanently over, no speculating over a future reboot (not that it was likely) or even imagining what those characters would be doing in a fictionalised future because Chandler’s dead now. It’s horrible. I won’t be able to watch it in the same way. Poor Matthew and his family and the other members of the Friends cast. I wish he’d been able to enjoy the fame it brought him and not resent the show as you felt he did. His acting and comedy was an enormous contribution to showbiz and truly brightened people’s day. How many of us can say that? It’s an incredible legacy. What a tragedy.

LaurieFairyCake · 29/10/2023 12:21

I haven't seen a response from the other Friends stars yet (apart from the actor who played Janice)

Anyone?

stayathomer · 29/10/2023 12:25

its horrible people talking about his demons etc when it looks like it could have been an accident, all the posts saying nobody could save him from his demons etc

LaurieFairyCake · 29/10/2023 12:26

Yes, I just mean people usually tweet very quickly and I thought I'd missed it

AutumnSolace · 29/10/2023 12:27

I expect they're all absolutely devastated.

WoollyBat · 29/10/2023 12:29

I think he's got his wish, because while I do see him as most famous for friends, he's really made a huge effort to talk about addiction and try to address it in a very honest way and make himself available on that issue, and he was good at that and made that mark. He didn't hide away despite sometimes being in a bad way. It must have been very hard to be one of the 6 glossy and famous friends stars and be the one who wasn't coping and who had issues like that.

I wonder if the other friends are preparing a joint statement.

WoollyBat · 29/10/2023 12:31

It's possible his history of addiction contributed to a medical issue, it's possible it was unrelated.

Cornishclio · 29/10/2023 12:32

I think it's sad. My kids grew up with Friends and although initially I shunned it I really enjoyed it when I watched it eventually. Matt Perry was so funny in it and seemed so witty in interviews. I thought he was better in Studio 60 a more serious role for him. I also read his biography where he was so candid about his struggles with addiction. I don't know how he died but he will be missed.

porridgeisbae · 29/10/2023 12:33

The Cranberries post on instagram IMHO implied he knew how he was going to go.

porridgeisbae · 29/10/2023 12:37

Sounds like it was a heart attack which isn't super uncommon at that age. Also, that's prob the only way you're going to drown in a jacuzzi. Sure it's sad, but it wasn't preventable or a "waste".

As PP's have said, Whitney and her daughter managed to drown in a bath, maybe via falling asleep due to drugs.

I also know of someone who deliberately drowned himself in a bath. Sad
