Is this outfit TOO much for a retail interview?

BigBrothersLittleSistee · 14/10/2023 20:15

I have an interview next week, although I have some retail experience it's not really my work background.
And the retail job I had before I didn't really have a proper interview as such.

Is this outfit too much?

TIA x

Not an interview outfit. We would look immediately and know before the interview you wouldn't get it sorry

SirenSays · 14/10/2023 21:34

Any chance we can see it from the front

BigBrothersLittleSistee · 14/10/2023 21:35

@SmileyClare that's a good point about showing I'm willing to get stuck in with stacking shelves. The skirt is actually so comfy and free moving for a pencil skirt, I think that's why I chose it. I have had pencil skirts in the past where I've not been able to walk 😅

And no tattoos?

It takes 30 seconds to form an impression of someone.
For all I know, you have a masters in business admin - but that outfit says mum on a night out, probably gets a bit raucous on the second bottle of the prosecco.
The tattoo doesn't help.

BigBrothersLittleSistee · 14/10/2023 21:39

@SirenSays I have got a picture from this angle... it is like a square neck style at the front.

Some really catty replies on here.

I'm betting a lot of these women saying snippy comments about your clothes are either, fat and jealous of your figure, snobs looking down their noses at you for working in retail on the high street or a combo of both. But then again you did ask, so they will call you out on that for feeling upset about their remarks.

The interview will hopefully be geared to finding out about more than just what you are wearing. It's good for a first impression but I think it will gee we fine for that. You could put a plainer blouse on but I think go with what you are comfortable in first and foremost. You look smart and like you've made an effort.

Confidence and warmth will help you come across as capable and someone friendly who will fit into a team.

It will all be about customer service and how well your personality will match to that.

Ignore the grumpy frumpy la de dahs on here.

SmileyClare · 14/10/2023 21:42

Ok sounds like the pencil skirt gets the thumbs up if it’s comfy and you can move!

I know what you mean. I tried on a really flattering pencil skirt in H and M was so happy- pretty disappointed the first time I wore it, and realised I was walking like a penguin and couldn’t actually do stairs 🤣

ActDottie · 14/10/2023 21:43

Skirt is fine but change the top to something more simple. I’d also wear tights.

Millybob · 14/10/2023 21:43

You've got a lovely figure - miles better than mine, but an interview is not the time to display it.
A man would wear a suit to an interview. Or at least a shirt and tie. Don't make life hard for yourself.

user1846385927482658 · 14/10/2023 21:47

It's a perfectly nice outfit but the top seems too fussy for an interview. Do you not have a plain shirt or something?

If you got the job would you work in those shoes?

LastNightIDreamtIWasAtManderleyAgain · 14/10/2023 21:51

15 denier black tights and a top with a more conservative neckline and softly tailored shape.

BigBrothersLittleSistee · 14/10/2023 21:51

@SmileyClare yes I think so! Will have to go through my wardrobe tomorrow for a top. And aww they are actually so horrible aren't they, even if they do look so good! 😄

@Millybob I'm not exactly trying to show off my figure, I actually just want to hide my mum-tum. And these men always look so smart! With minimal effort 🤦🏼‍♀️

@TwoBabas retail is not even my work background... due to my circumstances with regards to childcare since having my son I am not able to fully commit to do the hours I had done before. All I'm trying to do is to bring at least some pennies into the household and provide for my son.

Things for an interview I’d wear would be smart trousers, skirt and a top or smart trousers/ skirt and a shirt.

your outfit is nice for going out but wrong vibe for an interview.

gotomomo · 14/10/2023 21:52

Assuming that's a skirt, that's fine, the top is ok with a jacket or smart cardigan

SmileyClare · 14/10/2023 21:53

Well I suppose this thread is good practice for working in retail.

From experience the general public can be rude and talk down to you and make you feel like shit when you’re serving them 😩😂

namechange1986 · 14/10/2023 21:53

@TwoBabas The most judgemental person has been you...

I would go for a less fussy top.

Good luck Flowers

Starseeking · 14/10/2023 21:54

The skirt is fine, change the top for something a bit more formal and less going out with the girls style.

BigBrothersLittleSistee · 14/10/2023 21:55

@user1846385927482658 no I wouldn't wear these shoes to work in, why?

OP posts:
BigBrothersLittleSistee · 14/10/2023 21:55

@SmileyClare in retail.. the customers are always right 🤷🏼‍♀️😂😂

BigBrothersLittleSistee · 14/10/2023 21:56

@SmileyClare hopefully my next retail employer doesn't see this post 🫠

I agree with the others that a plainer top would be better. Good Luck with your interview.

funkyspunkymonkey · 14/10/2023 22:01

I don’t think people are being nasty just because they have said it’s not the right kind of top. I think it’s lovely, but I’d not wear it to an interview.

Just a thought, I have a mum tum and never wear that type of top because people think I am pregnant!

Good luck with the interview.

Its5656 · 14/10/2023 22:02

The skirt yes the top no. You'll be freezing, add some tights and switch the top to a shirt or fitted jumper. Good luck with your interview!

CandyLeBonBon · 14/10/2023 22:03

Top is lively and really suits you but probably a bit frou-frou for an interview.

Something less frilly. Pretty colour though.

CandyLeBonBon · 14/10/2023 22:06

And I wouldn't worry about your tattoo either - I've seen lots of retail workers with tattoos and it's a complete non issue
