Is this outfit TOO much for a retail interview?

I have an interview next week, although I have some retail experience it's not really my work background.
And the retail job I had before I didn't really have a proper interview as such.

Is this outfit too much?

TIA x

Is this outfit TOO much for a retail interview?

What retailer?

Hadebough · 14/10/2023 20:16

it depends what kind of shop it's for

LapinR0se · 14/10/2023 20:16

This is not suitable for an interview, it’s too evening-y and also too summery.

It doesn't look like an interview outfit at all sorry

MrsSeveride · 14/10/2023 20:18

If don’t want to say specifically, is it fashion? If so, is it fashion forward or classic? Any e name some competitors?

for what it’s worth, I think you look great, but having worked in retail for 20 years, id be better able to give a view if I had a bit more info.

Purplecatshopaholic · 14/10/2023 20:18

Probs be fine with a plainer top - might depend on the ‘vibe’ of the retailer though.

IveHadItUpToHere · 14/10/2023 20:19

If it's for a clothing retailer and all the items are from the shop - then it's ok. Otherwise, the top looks a bit too dressy.
But tbh I can't even tell from that photo whether that is a black skirt or cropped trousers/leggings. A skirt would be fine. Cropped trousers/leggings wouldn't.

theduchessofspork · 14/10/2023 20:19

It would be odd in late October

If it’s a young clothes store - dress in their style.

Otherwise go and have a gander and wear a smart version of what the staff are wearing. It’s an interview so you’d be expected to take it up a notch from the day to day.

renthead · 14/10/2023 20:20

It looks like a "going out" outfit. Regardless of the type of retail, it's not an interview outfit.

LubaLuca · 14/10/2023 20:21

I'd wear a plainer top and tights.

princesspeppax · 14/10/2023 20:22

Sorry op but yes I think so! Top looks to party like i think

I work in a retail clothing store. I wore black trousers and blouse if thats any help Smile

BigBrothersLittleSistee · 14/10/2023 20:25

The store sells books, crafts, toys, games etc... maybe you can work out the store from my description.
And it is a skirt that I'm wearing, I would like to wear the skirt but I don't want to be too black and boring 🤔

The top says 'wine with the girls on Thursday night' not 'interview'.

It's lovely but not an interview outfit imo.

beatrix1234 · 14/10/2023 20:26

Depends on the retailer, it’s good for Marks & Spencer but awful for urban outfitters. In any case it’s too summery for right now (would have been a good outfit two months ago). How do people dress at said company? Look what staff wear at said retailer or the clothes they sell and find a similar outfit, something that will make you blend in right away.

bookwormcrazy · 14/10/2023 20:28

Slightly off topic but I love your shoes!! Where are they from?

bookwormcrazy · 14/10/2023 20:29

And wear what you feel comfortable in for an interview. I think this is fine.

Sorry I didn’t read your last post. Then you need to wear something fun, smart and playful so your outfit might be right. Add a coat and a “fun hand bag” so it doesn’t look too “wine with the girls on Thursday night”.

inappropriateraspberry · 14/10/2023 20:31

You'd be better off with just black trousers and a shirt or even just a smarter looking t-shirt. Retail interviews at high st level don't expect you to be too dressy!

Loubelle70 · 14/10/2023 20:32

Personally id wear black tights..the skirt is fine..the top not so. Id wear a crisp white or blue tailored blouse or a fitted jumper x

cocksstrideintheevening · 14/10/2023 20:35

That is not an interview outfit, I don't care what sector but you'd be binned.

Unicorn2022 · 14/10/2023 20:37

I say wear it. It's smart, looks nice and fits well and if you feel comfortable in it then wear it.

SuperA1982 · 14/10/2023 20:39

I would say the outfit is fine - except for the trousers. I think it would be perfect if they were full length.

You need to change those glasses.

theysaiditgetseasier · 14/10/2023 20:42

The Works?

It's more of a going out outfit, put a blazer / tights with it and will look more appropriate.
Good luck

Olika · 14/10/2023 20:49

To me the top looks more like going out
