Is this outfit TOO much for a retail interview?

BigBrothersLittleSistee · 14/10/2023 20:15

I have an interview next week, although I have some retail experience it's not really my work background.
And the retail job I had before I didn't really have a proper interview as such.

Is this outfit too much?

TIA x

It's a lovely top but it looks like you're going to a wine bar, not an interview.

Go with the black skirt but a smarter top and you're golden.

Needanewlifeasap · 14/10/2023 23:19

Oh my gosh the replies are horrendous! Sorry not everyone wants to wear black trousers and a white/navy shirt, or some ugly blouse with something stupid like a necklace attached to it from the 70s. You look fine OP, trendy and smart and you're saying you're born in the 90s, so am I so maybe it's a generational thing, must be if they are saying it looks like a going out outfit, don't think anyone from our generation would be caught dead in that on a night out, it's clearly a work outfit

@user1846385927482658 no I wouldn't wear these shoes to work in, why?

If they have lots of applicants, bluntly they might use that as a sift - how far/close is this person from automatically meeting our dress code requirements if we offer the job?

If you're there neat, smart, practical and wearing suitable shoes/clothes/hair for carrying out the job you're being interviewed for, it makes you an easier option because they know they won't have battles with you turning up dressing incorrectly/inappropriately.

Smart busines wear is only interview clothing if you're being interviewed for an office business role.

Add tights op and maybe a smart jacket?

greenbeansnspinach · 15/10/2023 10:15

I was one of the people who said the top is lovely but probably pick something a bit plainer (but still a nice colour, doesn’t have to be drab) for the top.
I honestly don’t think a tattoo is a problem. I wouldn’t have said that 20 years ago but they are totally acceptable now.
I used to interview lots of people for jobs. Nearly every single woman’s neck will redden up in an interview situation! I always suggest to my daughters to wear a high neck or at least not one exposing the top of their chest, which almost always goes red too. It doesn’t matter at all, but can affect your confidence if you glance down and notice you look like a robin !
Good luck!

Oh look. A bit of casual ageism! How lovely!

I think I’m uniquely qualified to respond to this because I’m mid 20s, used to work at Topshop (ie used to be fashionable at work, but also have a good awareness of style & trends) and now work in a corporate environment in finance. So I learned when to be stylish and when not to be stylish. I had to learn what connotations a certain outfit might bring. Sometimes it’s best to dress in a way that’s familiar with others you come across. Eg a khaki suit might look great on me, but maybe it’s best to stick to black or grey if I’m going for a job interview as I want the interviewer to picture me slotting right into their company. I don’t need them to picture how I might dress on a night out or lunching with friends…but that’s sort of the vibe your outfit gives off.

I think the 1st photo of you looks better than the 2nd. In the 1st photo the top says “look at me”, in the 2nd photo the top just looks awkward. Peplum is outdated and just looks fussy imo, excess material in the wrong areas. Don’t show tattoos at an interview, and don’t have bare legs unless the dress/skirt is longer. Wear tights with that skirt, and wear different shoes that completely cover your feet. Loafers or brogues would look nice, or like those low rise Dr martens. Wear a different top.

westnorth · 17/10/2023 04:38

Overall, your outfit gives the impression you’re going for a “cute” outfit for interview but you need to go for purely “professional” instead.

I wore a cream turtleneck and grey checked blazer at an interview recently (got the job - am now on a v high salary at a young age.) For my Topshop interview years ago I wore a blue blouse in a silky material & got the job. It’s the kind of outfit I’d wear in finance now, black skirt & black blazer. Regardless of the type of industry or it “just being retail”, you dress to impress so it’s best to lean smarter.

MyCircumference · 17/10/2023 05:00

your figure doesnt matter at all, your mum tum is of no concern op

NoHeavenNoMore · 17/10/2023 05:24

I like it!! Just be yourself. Clothes let your personality shine through 😊

Turquoisa80 · 17/10/2023 05:49

I'm sorry but to me it looks dated, like an outfit from the late 90s, I'd go high waisted trousers and shirt instead.

In what world is that outfit trendy?

itwasdifferentinthe90s · 17/10/2023 06:26

@westnorth how incredibly patronising

Startingagainandagain · 17/10/2023 06:57

That's an odd choice for a job interview in late October...

Have a look at what sales assistant wear in the shop and go from there. It is usually better to go for something smart (it doesn't have to be a boring suit) for an interview.

BigBrothersLittleSistee · 17/10/2023 09:19

Okay, so I bought this blouse yesterday, I already had the trousers and shoes (shoes for my current job).
One picture is top tucked in and the other with it out. I'm thinking of putting a black jacket, which I've already got or blazer (if I can find one cheap enough). I was thinking a jacket/blazer to kind of die down the pattern abit and only have a little bit on show.
I haven't done my hair, but I'm thinking a low bun at the back. 🤔

Going for a completely different look this time 😂

You look great! I liked the first outfit too but this one is really smart. Good luck!

greenbeansnspinach · 17/10/2023 09:25

Perfect!

Paramummy3 · 17/10/2023 09:25

Yes the second outfit is lovely and pitched right for the interview I think 👍

Chewbecca · 17/10/2023 09:25

Tucked in is better. Blazer would be good but not essential, you look interview ready.
Good luck.

Sallyh87 · 17/10/2023 09:33

Great outfit, smart, tidy and professional. Best of luck in your interview!

BakedTattie · 17/10/2023 09:37

The second outfit for sure. The first one was too much ‘going out on the town’ vibe.

good luck!!

BigBrothersLittleSistee · 17/10/2023 09:44

Aww thank you, I feel much better about this outfit 😁

OP posts:
MrsSkylerWhite · 17/10/2023 09:45

A plain white shirt would be best.

SmileyClare · 17/10/2023 09:55

Thumbs up from me 👍

Good luck x

LubaLuca · 17/10/2023 10:22

I think you've hit the sweet spot there, and I agree it looks better tucked in. Good luck with the interview 🙂
