I just had a rummage in my freezer looking for inspiration for tonight's dinner and found a plastic container containing leftovers of some sort. I always write on the lid what things are, and it clearly says:

CEDRIC GROSS

What in the wide world can it be? Do I have to thaw it so I can find out? It looks like it may be something with rice, but what? 😂

Could you have written it backwards? So it's actually SSORG CIRDEC?

Happy to help!

This is the only entry on the internet for this word. So I doubt it haha.

Was a German footballer

now he’s in her freezer 😆

That made me snort my wine up my nose. Thank you! 😂🤣

Badgrief · 09/11/2023 22:19

Sometimes I label things in the freezer but then I get them out a week later. It's the unlabelled things which lurk for months. The most fun is when we take 2 random boxes and mix them for a meal

TheFireflies · 09/11/2023 22:23

Maybe the German footballer inexplicably lives in your neighbourhood and you accidentally got his order from the Chinese takeaway, but equally inexplicably didn’t realise…

This is the only possible explanation. When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however unlikely, must be the answer.

I once grew a ridiculous amount of tomatoes, and had loads of takeaway boxes of them in the freezer.

Decided to make dinner, having forgotten to defrost them, chucked a box full into the pan still frozen.

They happily defrosted, I chucked in all of my normal ingredients to mingle and once everything was looking lovely had a spoonful to check the seasoning.

It was at that point I discovered it was not tomatoes. We had also grown a LOT of very hot chillies. Which apparently DP, having been left unattended at some point, had diced and frozen in huge bloody blocks, unlabelled, that were no use to anyone and looked exactly like cooked diced tomato. Which I did point out was somewhat foolhardy after I had scraped myself off the ceiling and put my head underwater for an hour.

I have just informed DH that I'm feeding him a surprise out of the freezer again tomorrow evening. Brace yourself love 😂

Thank You, OP and OP's DH, for the update!

CatSat · 09/11/2023 22:49

I am pleased to note that I am not the only one to have confused red cabbage with red berries.
Obviously that was also the time when being in a rush, I didn't bother to defrost it first before throwing the crumble topping on top and baking.

Lesson learnt, everything now gets clearly labelled and defrosted 😆

I had cheese sauce for lunch once thinking it was leek and potato soup. Cedric Gross sounds like a Harry Potter character.

Cheese sauce is deceptive! I froze some in an ice cream container, and either didn't label it or the label came off. Some time later we spent ages wondering why the vanilla soft-scoop was a hard as a rock.......Grin!

  1. Root vegetables in... something brown
  2. Minced hedgehog

Surprisingly 2 is really nice. It looked blummin awful but I broke a little bit off and heated it up and realised it’s parsnip soup with coconut milk and Thai curry paste. I’d forgotten I made that but it’s a lunch for tomorrow.
1 I still don’t know but it’s in the fridge and we will either use it or chuck it tomorrow. I think maybe a veg curry I’ve put leftover everything in.

I defrosted short crust pastry last Christmas to make mince pies, was really difficult to roll out. Turns out it was fresh pasta dough..

Telling my friend about this & she said she had defrosted stuffing and some gravy - which turned out to be falafels and some toffee sauce.

Well done to your DP for taking one for the team.

A few Boxing Days ago I had the gravy ready for the meal and I also had made the toffee sauce ready for the sticky toffee puddings, OH was tasked with carrying things through to the dining room and I just managed to stop someone pouring toffee sauce onto their pork.

For 2 years we had a giant snowball on the freezer, which my kids had stowed away for use on a hot summers day. My mum was very surprised when the chicken she got out and left to defrost on the draining board ran away in a puddle.

LipbalmOrKnickers · 10/11/2023 01:33

Sympathies OP, I was looking forward to a hearty curry the other day and I ended up with piping hot swede instead. 😑

hadrianswallsycamore · 10/11/2023 03:13

I once defrosted 2 portions of cheese sauce and made macaroni cheese. Everyone was happily eating it when I sat down to start. It tasted weirdly sweet. That's when I realised I had defrosted one cheese sauce and one custard!! It was awful but everyone e else ate it and said it was ok. I'm not sure what that says about my cooking!!

sep135 · 10/11/2023 06:47

I made fish fingers with crumble topping which I'd assumed was breadcrumbs. It was slightly grim but we ate it as the cod was expensive.

OP - when I write my Great Booker-Prize-Winning Novel please may I name one of my characters Cedric Gross? I have a feeling it could mean the difference between being merely shortlisted and actually getting the prize.

He could be the arch-nemesis of the Rev'd Dorien Pygge, Curate Extraodinaire, and his crustacean sidekick, Barry the Prawn .

I'll mention you in my gracious acceptance speech.

ArthurbellaScott · 10/11/2023 08:49

Imagine Cedric Gross is going to get a bit of a surprise the next time he vanity-googles himself and finds he's been eaten.

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 10/11/2023 09:35

Shrimply irresistible 🍤

Oh please do - be my guest.

And that footballer with the same name... well lets just say he won't be troubling you. 😂

This reminds of when a woman I know froze some left over chicken casserole in an old caramel swirl ice cream tub,but didn't label it as being chicken casserole. I think you can guess what happened a few weeks later.....

RusClark · 10/11/2023 18:09

Cedric Thompson recipe? Gross, large?
