Whether it’s personal or well known, which unsolved case makes your brain sound like dial up?

@BeverleyMacker I am not convinced that Elisa Lam's death was foul play it seems she was in a manic state.due to bipolar and possibly thought she could jump off the edge of the water tank and fly. I have a friend with type 1 bipolar disorder who has a permanent injury and walks with a cane because during a severe manic episode she believe d God was telling her to jump out the window and angels would catch her. Quite a common delusion in bipolar disorder.

Jonbenet Ramsey. Poor poor child. 😢

This one fascinates me. I've read so many books about the case. There definitely was NOT an intruder.

Throwncrumbs · 02/09/2023 22:15

There’s a good YouTuber/podcast on ‘missing’ cases, Trace Evidence

What really scares me is, for all the above people someone knows what happened to each victim. It makes me wonder about the murderers daily lives, their family, their friends, their guilt, do they relive the day they took a life, how often do they think about their crime. They are someones neighbour or work colleague. They walk amongst us

A girl I went to high school with was murdered in the 90s and this is what freaks me out the most and still keeps me awake at night when I’m stressed about other things. Small town, she went to a party and never came home. The group of classmates she was last seen with said she ran away and she was calling them from pay phones, so police didn’t look for her really. Months later she was found just over the fence from the path she would have walked home from the party, so she was so close the whole time. And all the stories of her calling from pay phones didn’t add up, as she was long dead when they said she was still calling from the road. So they obviously know something at the least and did something at the worst, right? But no one has ever been charged. One of the group is dead from health issues now but the others all seem to have gone on to lead quite normal lives with Facebook profiles and such. (Sometimes FB suggests them as someone I might know. No thanks!)

They were in their first year when I was in my last, so it’s not like they were my close friends or anything, but my town and school were so small that everyone knows everyone at least a little, and knowing someone at school was murdered and it was probably someone else at school who killed her… that is so creepy.

Thankfully I live a long way from my home town or I think it would creep me out every day.

But what was Elisa so scared off on that landing as she was about to get into the elevator? She was looking at something - or someone, and was clearly desperate to get away. That mystery was never solved...

And it was assumed she climbed into the water tank, (and drowned by accident,) as no other explanation was given or proven. I say 'assumed' as we will never know if she was killed by someone else, or if she took her own life, or if she died by accident. Hence, it's still a mystery.........

Edited

The toxicology report showed she hadn't been taking her psychiatric medications. She was meant to be on several; she'd taken only the antidepressants and not the anti-psychotics. The plausible answer is that she wasn't looking at anything or anyone, she was having a psychotic episode which for her was very real but didn't have any outside aggressor.

The death of Cindy James. Was it suicide or was she telling the truth about being stalked and harassed for years? The police thought she was making it all up and then staged an elaborate suicide to make it look like she was murdered, due to her having 'hysterical personality disorder'. An inquest wasn't able to determine what happened and her manner of death was put down as an unknown event.

Completely speculative, but a while ago there was a thread here of people who had ‘left’ their lives and one poster had me convinced it was Ruth Wilson. I would never have the balls to directly ask because she was very clear that she would never ever reveal her identity to anyone in real life, let alone on mn. But I read all her replies carefully …

It's probably in very bad taste to ask this but I'm curious as to what the poster shared which made you think it might be RW? I find that case fascinating and it seemed she had an "interesting" home life to say the least, wasn't her mother dead and her father suspected of being involved with it ?

I'd give anything for poor little keith Bennett to be found. It's something I've always thought about. He needs to be brought home. My brain goes into overdrive wondering where he is on the moors

I agree. I was desperate for him to be found before his mother died.

The Putney Bridge jogger. He didn’t kill this woman, but what else has he done - before, and since? There’s a theory about him being an off duty police officer apparently and the investigation closed in 2018. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-44639208

Someone/some people know who this piece of shit is and have kept schtum.

Cruise ship missing persons fascinate me. This is a rabbit hole I have fell down before and was utterly shocked at the amount of incidents on cruise ships. There is no centralised database of missing persons and due the lack of jurisdiction on ships and the smoke and mirrors around flags of convenience - it is impossible to say how many people exactly go missing from cruises. But it is thought to be at least 1 per month.

Pretty easy to disappear off a ship, that's a fairly vast watery grave right there.

Georgeandzippyzoo · 02/09/2023 22:22

Lots already mentioned by pp..
A local story as in NE England was a consultant/doctor who went missing, car and wallet etc found, never heard of again. His wife was expecting their first child and I can remember thinking how could he do that.
Reading after I think i can remember he was struggling wether or not to accept a new position .
Believe his wife moved to Australia yrs later.

@WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps I think Elisa was having a psychotic break. What she was scared of may have felt entirely real to her while not actually existing.

Possibly. But I don't think anyone knows for sure. Not 100% anyway.

Simbaiamyourfather · 02/09/2023 22:24

Damien Nettles, none of it makes any sense. There was CCTV footage that was deleted, evidence lost, the same names came up over and over etc... On a very small island where everyone knows everyone how can a teenage boy just vanish after buying a portion of chips.

Same. Have you listened to the recent deep dive podcast on this? Called “Lost in Panama”.

I think about the Caylee Anthony case sometimes. I remember seeing advertisement for a Crime+Investigation show a few months ago, that was an interview with Casey Anthony and I couldn’t watch it as I have my thoughts about her involvement.

UneFoisAuChalet · 02/09/2023 22:27

Brian Schaffer - I think he died in the bar. Maybe drugs? because he didn’t seem like the fighter type, but something happened that night and he never left the bar - as In walked out. I can’t remember all that happened after, but I think his father died when he was struck my lightening a few years later. He dad blamed a friend of his who was around the night he disappeared and that leads me to believe it was drug related. Friend gave Brian drugs, he ODs, friend and others panic and get rid of his body.

Brian’s girlfriend at the time, Alexis, was supposed to go to Florida, I think, with him, the following day. I use to read her blog after he disappeared. She became a doctor (they were both med students) and later married and had kids. We are similar ages and I was worried, as much as you can be for a stranger, that she would never move past his disappearance.

Stephen Clarke in Saltburn. I live in the area and word on the street is that he was never even on the pier that day. The story is a stinking pile of shit and his parents are guilty as sin. See recent interviews and docs on his case. Something happened at home that day and they’re responsible.

bookworm14 · 02/09/2023 22:28

I’ve remembered another one - the murder of Alistair Wilson in Nairn. Deeply strange set of circumstances.

Gh12345 · 02/09/2023 22:29

There was a young man who went missing in a dead end after a night out. Was on cctv and there was no way out the street but he went missing

tenyearshavegotbehindyou · 02/09/2023 22:29

A personal one: My Dad went missing 24 years ago, Without a trace. They then found his body on the side of a road in rural France. He was found on what would have been his Birthday. He had been murdered and left there for all this time.

Asha Degree, 9 year old girl who left her house in the dark, in the rain, and walked for miles down an unlit road at 3am, Was seen by motorists, She has never been seen since. Her backpack was found 26 miles away but no trace of her. Why did she leave her home at that time in the morning in the pitch darkness on a stormy rainy windy night, What could get a 9 year old to do that?

The Yuba County five has kept me up many a night, Five young men went to a basketball game, took a wrong turn on the way back and got stuck in the snow, Decided to walk towards a cabin, All found dead in and around the cabin, One of the men was never found but his shoes were. It was later found that there was enough food to keep them all going for a while, Spare winter clothing to keep them warm and also a generator they could have used, none of them were used. Each had 'mild intellectual disabilities' (as desciribed at the time they went missing) but were able to drive to the basketball game (something they did often) Nobody knows why they took the wrong turn as they had made the trip many a time, and nobody knows why they decided to walk to the cabin in freezing temps or why they didn't even attempt to eat the food etc One of the men died in the bed in the cabin and had been wrapped up in blankets to try to keep him warm, A watch was found on the side table that didn't belong to any of the men.

Rolypops · 02/09/2023 22:30

Some really interesting cases here and some I had never heard of before.

What I want to hear are peoples theories on the disappearance of Andrew Gosden. I have followed the case for years and there just seems to be nothing. The idea that this poor vulnerable little lad could be seen on CCTV leaving a major train station and then just seemingly be swallowed up by the city never to be seen again is just terrifying. He was a rocker and a gamer and reminds me so much of the boys I would hang around with when I was at school and I desperately hope he is found someday for the sake of his family. I know they have their theories that he went to see a gig with someone etc but there has never seemed to be anything solid.

Rolypops · 02/09/2023 22:31

Terribly sorry about your dad @tenyearshavegotbehindyou
