‼️Significant Missile Attack on Kyiv: Consequences

▫️ The attack was a combination of Shahed drones followed by missile strikes.
▫️ Over 20 targets were intercepted and shot down above the city during the night and morning.
▫️ In the Shevchenkivsky district, debris fell on a business site, causing a fire and resulting in the death of two security guards.
▫️ In the Darnytsia district, debris landed on the roof of a commercial building.
▫️ In other parts of Kyiv, three individuals were injured, with two of them being hospitalized.

Despite this, the city's air defense systems successfully safeguarded Kyiv throughout the night.

Russia refused to investigate the plane crash with Yevgeny Prigozhin according to international rules.
Brazil offered its help because it manufactures the Embraer business jet on which Prigozhin was on board. Reuters writes that Brazil's Aviation Incident Investigation Service was waiting for Russia's consent because the accident "raises suspicions of the Kremlin's involvement."

Satellite images show that barricades from five sunken barges have appeared near the Crimean Bridge between the island and the Tuzlin spit. Presumably, they have to confront Ukrainian naval drones.
The distance between the barges is about 200 meters, which is enough for the passage of drones. Therefore, there is an assumption that special nets were pulled on the barge, which will prevent underwater and surface transport from reaching the bridge.

Sad

@MissConducUS do you have a take on this.

As Chatillion pointed out a while ago, those infographics are not always accurate but apparently 70 Republican senators voted against more help for Ukraine :s

I assume that this is the poll being referred to:

https://www.cnn.com/2023/08/04/politics/cnn-poll-ukraine/index.html

It's concerning, but it's only one poll at one point in time. I think that if Ukraine makes more progress in the counteroffensive, the numbers will shift and there will be less concern about this turning into another forever war.

Looking at the bigger political picture, Trump's support among moderate Republicans and independent voters continues to fall, which points to him losing the general election to Biden. That would provide support for continued assistance to Ukraine.

CNN Poll: Majority of Americans oppose more US aid for Ukraine in war with Russia | CNN Politics

Most Americans oppose Congress authorizing additional funding to support Ukraine in its war with Russia, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS, as the public splits over whether the US has already done enough to assist Ukraine.

@MissConducUS appreciate the explanation. Always grateful for the support of the US government and the US public and the fierce determination within many quarters to continue to do what is right.

Minister@DmytroKuleba
described how a group of 31 fighters made the liberation of Robotyne possibleThe Foreign Minister told diplomats in France that for several months a Ukrainian unit continuously stormed this front section. Due to exhaustion and losses, at one point, it lost the ability to continue the offensive – and then "radical decisions" were made: the unit's leadership was changed. The Minister explained that the new commander requested the assembly of motivated fighters ready for combat missions. A combined group of 31 fighters was formed, a third of whom had no combat experience, but all of them had the will to win. "In 18 hours, they crawled literally on their stomachs for kilometers through minefields, where the russians placed six mines per square meter. Finally, the unit reached the landing zone and ousted the russians from there, holding this position for two days until reinforcements arrived. A group of 31 individuals did the work of an entire battalion, which would typically consist of around 400 people. The losses amounted to 7 wounded, of which only one was seriously injured from stepping on a mine. Essentially, the efforts of this group enabled an entire brigade's advance on Robotyne and its liberation after weeks of sieges," the minister said.

Pskov (Pleskov/Pleskow) has a significant role in the Russian psyche for those who know their history. This ranges from its role in greater Rus’, Baltic Crusades, Nevsky & Novgorod, often on the frontier and an important base for operations.

apparently 70 Republican senators voted against more help for Ukraine

If this is the USA, that’s challenging. There are 49 Republican Senators (out of 100).

The next US elections will no doubt be important for Ukraine.

Well, obviously, some of them voted twice. 😂

Well done spotting the error. It was members of the House of Representatives. They were trying to amend the annual defense spending bill, knowing that the amendment had no chance of actually being adopted.

While Rep. Matt Gaetz's amendment was voted down by a wide bipartisan margin, it offered greater clarity around GOP support for Ukraine aid.

It was 70 Congress-critters. 11 Senators voted against. So basically about a third of the House Republicans and under a quarter of the Senate Republicans.

DancesWithDucks · 30/08/2023 20:03

Oh right ... glad it's not as bad as first seems. Still a larger proportion than one would like ... was some of it tactical voting, then?

It's political posturing when people vote for something that has no chance of actually happening. In this case, I think that those 70 representatives are from Pro-Trump districts, and they are trying to align themselves with that part of the party.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 30/08/2023 20:48

@DancesWithDucks I am in awe of the sheer bloody mindedness of those 31 soldiers. Imagine crawling on your stomach for kilometers through such a heavily mined area. It is this incredible fortitude that has to win the war for Ukraine.

Probably something like that...

The delivery system is interesting but the fact that enough of these drones got through to destroy/disable a number fighter sized targets with a small warhead is....well...even more interesting...

I suppose it might be that the Russians are slack and always park up in the same spot so if the Ukrainians were simply prepared to play the odds and rely on non-real time intel and good GPS guidance....

That’s Ben Wallace formally resigned, Cabinet Reshuffle imminent.

Sky seems to think Grant Shapps is likely to be the next defence secretary, god help us!

Agreed..

He's been about as useful as a chocolate fire guard in any of the previous roles he's held in government.

PerkingFaintly · 31/08/2023 09:24

Oh good lord.

Well I can't blame Wallace for moving on. It might not be much compared to the load the Ukrainian government have been carrying, but at the moment it's one of the more gruelling roles in UK government.

But Shapps? Please no. Cardboard would do a better job, on current showing.
