Rishi triumphs over the teaching unions!

He has managed to beat the teaching unions into submission and to call off strikes by:

Offering them a pay deal worth more than double the original government recommendation

Giving schools extra funding to pay for it.

Well done Rishi, you really showed them!

@Chunt

The Tories favourite line “there’s no money”. Yeah. Sure.

Well when you’re dealing with a load of shit day in day out you really should be financially remunerated for it. I don’t think any teacher here was dumb enough to truly think the Tories would solve all the woes in education right now. Pay is a small part of the reform. We all know that. Small steps add up. Personally I think the strikes made some parents aware of what an utter shit show education is right now for their kids. They HAVE woken up a lot of parents who might actually think twice about voting in these arseholes again. They haven’t been fruitless.

It terrifies me as a parent with a child who started reception this year. That is why I am disappointed that the unions are suggesting this offer be accepted.

I've never voted Tory.

BabylonianChild · 13/07/2023 17:17

So how are all these pay rises going to bring down inflation?

Yes well that's kind of my point. None of that is coming so the suggestion that these strikes were about anything other than pay was simply not true.

I don't begrudge pay rises at all. I do feel a little conned by some of the things posted here before though.

I've been posting about all the issues in education way before teachers went on strike.

If you've only just been hearing about them, why do you think that is?

I don’t think it’s a bad thing (I am a teacher) but I’m acknowledging it may bring other problems with it.

I think the unions have tried, as far as possible, to ensure that those problems are nowhere near schools.

Never voted Tory either. My eldest was born in 2010 he has only ever known a Tory government and he’s going into year 9 with no maths or science teacher. My daughter is going into year 7. It’s too late for my kids now.

Hereinthismoment · 13/07/2023 17:22

I don’t doubt that giraffe, and I’m pleased by todays news. But then to me the strike was always about pay.

noblegiraffe · 13/07/2023 17:22

I think if parents are concerned about the issues in schools, then STEP THE FUCK UP.

The Tories will keep on telling you public sector pay rises fuel inflation. Hunt even tried to explain how yesterday. They don't. Nothing like the private sector pay rises that the government can't control.

Good man. Now sort out the railways and hospitals! The next election could be closer than we thought....

They fucking did by supporting your strikes and turning up to fucking marches. They turn up to help out at school, they fund trips other children's parents can't afford, they volunteer for activities so they can go ahead.

@noblegiraffe wow. Enjoy your pay rise but don't pretend it's about anything but money to garner more support next time. I shall remember how dismissive of the assistance parents give you are whenever I read another post of yours.

The Tories favourite line “there’s no money”. Yeah. Sure.

Well, if there's any money in the system, it's certainly not coming my way. If public servants think they've got anything to complain about, I suggest they leave their jobs and security and pensions and become self-employed. Then they might realise that they're not that badly off.

MissPop · 13/07/2023 17:32

A lot of parents just don’t care. A lot think it doesn’t affect their child or school (when schools are masters at deception and keeping up a good front). I think the penny is slowly dropping though.

Chunt · 13/07/2023 17:33

@kirinm It was only ever about money. Noble Giraffe has become the self-proclaimed saviour of the teaching profession, but other views are available.

If it’s so rosy you can end your self employment and come and join us? 😄. Security and pension awaits you……

What else did you want the strikes to be about that they are actually allowed to be about?

Grin I'm not self-employed (I haven't worked for more than 20 years, since having PFB, thank God). But I have friends who are teachers, and friends who are self-employed, and I know whose job I would rather do, all things considered. My ex husband is a teacher, btw.

Tbf as glad as I am re the pay rise I remain as cynical as ever about the NEU and I won’t apologise for that. And giraffe shouting and swearing at people generally isn’t effective at winning them to your cause.
