Rishi triumphs over the teaching unions!

noblegiraffe · 13/07/2023 13:43

He has managed to beat the teaching unions into submission and to call off strikes by:

Offering them a pay deal worth more than double the original government recommendation

Giving schools extra funding to pay for it.

Well done Rishi, you really showed them!

So go out and yell in a parents face tomorrow STEP THE FUCK UP. That’ll work 🤣

Mumtothreegirlies · 13/07/2023 17:51

It should never have been that hard to begin with. They never have trouble finding money for needless wars or millions of illegal immigrants.

noblegiraffe · 13/07/2023 17:51

Some people seem to be pissed off that teachers are probably going to accept the offered pay rise and end the strikes.

Like they want us to continue striking until all the problems in education are solved.

But teachers aren't allowed to strike about the vast majority of problems in education.

Striking about pay allowed a conversation about the huge numbers of problems in education. The media have actually started to pay attention to e.g. the falling down school buildings and lack of teachers and teaching assistants.

So if you are pissed off at those problems in education that you only found out about because of the teacher strikes - take that information and do something with it,

Teachers can't strike about it. We are holding the whole thing together on a shoe string so don't bitch at us about the problems either. We know.

Millions?? What on earth are you talking about?

Its one pool of money. If one gets more, the other gets less. Its just logic.

It isn’t. That’s why the guy has separated departments and budget lines. 🙄

Did you actually go on strike?

Hereinthismoment · 13/07/2023 17:53

That’s my point tbh Giraffe. If we want to improve conditions in schools, strikes aren’t the way to do it.

If we want to have a pay rise, strikes are the way to do it. I do think it was misguided to claim the strikes were about anything other than pay, I don’t think there is anything wrong with going on strike because we want more pay!

Hereinthismoment · 13/07/2023 17:54

No - wrong Union. No way will I join NEU, sorry.

I would have gone on strike with NAS though.

Translucentwaters · 13/07/2023 17:56

I am very much looking forward to all the thousands of young, talented and committed teachers that will now pour into the school system as a result of this pay rise, as you promised this was all that was stopping them over and again on MN. We can look forward to a bright new chapter of energised teaching now.
Excited by those suspending their retirement plans now they have everything they want.

No more whinging teacher threads because they will all be well paid, rested with much of the year as pure holidays, whats not to love! 🎉

Win win.

Bloody government even!

I dunno. You moan if he doesn't give you want you want. You moan if he does give you want.
It seems as if you just like moaning really.

noblegiraffe · 13/07/2023 17:58

That’s my point tbh Giraffe. If we want to improve conditions in schools, strikes aren’t the way to do it.

Teacher pay and the funding for them are part of conditions in schools. They're not two separate entities existing with no impact on each other.

If this pay rise keeps some teachers in a job, that's better for their colleagues and the kids. If the fact that it has got extra funding (guaranteed it wouldn't have without the strikes) means that teaching assistants keep their jobs, then that's better for their colleagues and the kids.

The teaching workforce is a big part of what makes a school.

Bollocks did I.

Me?

I think some people just like moaning about me.

The teaching workforce is a big part of what makes a school. I agree - but that makes the strike about pay!

I think one of the biggest problems is that it’s a bit of a feminist issue (sorry to digress for a moment) with so many women in teaching we tend to be far too apologetic about so called selfish reasons for striking . Much better to strike about pay and own it. But people don’t want to do that so it’s been made into a worthier sort of cause and now that we’ve sort of had to say oh more money, yes please, it does make us look a bit hypocritical. I’m not saying that we ARE, I’m saying I can see how some people might interpret it as such.

For my part, I don’t think that flinging money into endless snake oil campaigns and getting experts in improves life in schools. It’s good teachers and good teaching and I don’t think we should ever apologise for that and for being ‘worth’ it.

Snapdrag0n555 · 13/07/2023 18:04

Does it mean funding for TAs will be cut?

Translucentwaters · 13/07/2023 18:04

noblegiraffe · 13/07/2023 17:59

as you promised this was all that was stopping them over and again on MN

Bollocks did I.

You guys all said if you pay us properly you will attract new talent into teaching, and retain the current staff therefore ensuring the future success and academic prosperity for many years to come.

That’s why you are all striking remember? For the children you said. Not for your bank balance. Have you forgotten?

Probably! Because the loudest voices tend to win the day.

Hereinthismoment · 13/07/2023 18:06

I think it’s a possibility @Snapdrag0n555 . I also think it might mean given the choice schools may employ an inexperienced teacher over an experienced one even if the experienced one is better suited to therole, but that’s been happening since dinosaurs ruled the classroom.

Hercisback · 13/07/2023 18:07

I agree - but that makes the strike about pay!

What else can we strike about?

Better pay means more chance of retaining teachers, helping everyone.

I don't think we're going to be paid properly. But I do think it's the best deal we're going to get under these numpties.

Snapdrag0n555 · 13/07/2023 18:07

That’s great for kids with SENs who are already being let down hugely.

Your opening post was a sarcastic moan. You couldn't just say, great, I'm happy with what Sunak has done. You had to couch it in a gripe.

Hereinthismoment · 13/07/2023 18:10

@Hercisback

We can only strike about pay

The ballot explicitly asked ‘are you prepared to go on strike about pay’

We have now accepted or are on the verge of accepting a pay rise.

I have no problem with this - the exact opposite in fact, I am pleased.

But I do think to keep insisting it WASN’T about pay is, ah, a bit stupid, if that isn’t too impolite.

If we can’t strike about anything other than pay but the strike wasn’t about pay then we should not have used strike(s) as a way of resolving those issues.

(as an aside the plural of strike looks wrong - strikes? Struck? I should know this!)
