Are any flat earthers here?

I have a question that has bothered me all morning. If the earth is a disc then why is it nighttime in Australia right now?

If they're just on a different part of the same disc surely they would see the same sun as I do?

https://www.livescience.com/63648-flat-earth-explanation-for-the-equinox.html

I have found this which appears to be the most popular solution offered by flat earthers but it still makes no sense. It would only work if the earth was a dome, not flat, or else we would all just see a circling ball of light all the time.

NB: I may be procrastinating because I have a lawn to mow and a drain to unblock.

How Do Flat-Earthers Explain the Equinox? We Investigated.

Equinoxes would be physically impossible over a flat Earth, but that doesn't stop conspiracy theorists from trying to explain them.

There is no Sun.

You are missing the purpose and effect of the white surrounding disc in the picture. It is a huge artificial light and has been there for millenia, but normally only one segment is fully lit and it revolves continuously at 1,000 mph around our Flearth. That’s what gives us what the light we know. The Sun, as we see it, is actually an aircraft at high altitude drawing up some of the artificial light, concentrating it into a very hot beam which is reflected off a polished mirror.

The picture is an artists impression, but currently the only bright part of the disc is over Western Europe and the eastern part of the Atlantic. The part that is currently unlit is next to the portion that contains Fiji, Australia and New Zealand. People there cannot see the sun and the darkest portion, contains contrails collected throughout the day which contain particles that have a soporific effect. That’s why we sleep. Also, in Australia in particular, when it turns dark bars shut down so they have to go home and sleep because there is nothing else to do.

One of the reasons the Vikings had longboats was to ensure that if they sailed too close to the edge of the world they could all run back up the other end of the ship and their combined weight would stop them from tipping over the edge. That’s where they got the idea from for the bus scene in The Italian Job.

That makes more sense than the sun is like a spotlight that circles the north pole. I think I like your idea better.

It seriously bothering me, though. Without a plausible explanation for time zones and seasons, how can anyone possibly believe the Earth is flat?

My colleague is a completely converted flat earther, 'show me the curve' is frequently heard. We are covered by a dome, apparently. I asked, who made the dome? God was the reply.

He believes in every conspiracy theory going.

Comedycook · 11/07/2023 16:11

I do love a conspiracy theory but a flat earth is a step too far...one thing I really want to know is if the earth truly is flat, why are we being lied to? Like, what's in it for "them" to lie to us that the earth is a sphere?

blankittyblank · 11/07/2023 16:13

This is something which has always bothered me. I used to go down a rabbit hole of flat earthers, to try to understand how they explain things like the above - the change of day and night across the earth.

One guy was explaining something similar to the image above. But what I can't get past, is WHY?! Why would God bother with that random idea of light not being equally distributed? What's the point? Why not just have us all in day, then all in night. I mean, it's a really complex solution to something which could have been far simpler. And why then, have some countries suffer with extreme darkness for months, and countries which experience intense, deadly heat.

CinderRosie · 11/07/2023 16:15

I looked into how Flat Earthers explain planes/boats travelling around the world. One explanation I got was that they are teleported to the other side Hmm

blankittyblank · 11/07/2023 16:16

Oh yeah that's another one! That all Pilots are in on it, and all politicians. Again, no idea why this being kept from us though...

EmmaEmerald · 11/07/2023 16:22

And why don’t we fall off the edge, or is that where they think missing explorers have gone?

Frequency · 11/07/2023 16:24

@EmmaEmerald

Yes, that's something else that bothers me. If there is an edge why have we not seen it and how do ships and planes not fall off it?

I laughed out loud at this post but then thought omg some people actually believe this stuff??

Fallenangelofthenorth · 11/07/2023 16:41

I'm not sure about the sun but seem to remember something about the theory being that the sun is small and kinda on tracks.

The reason we don't fall off is that there's an ice wall the whole way round and then the firmament/dome.

Travel - you could still go anywhere in the world on a flat earth, it would just make some of the flight paths a bit odd perhaps. A lot would still work going either direction if you imagined all the countries in the middle and being surrounded by the arctic and antartic which now meet rather than being opposite ends of a sphere.

I did look into the theory years ago but it seemed quite complicated and also involved hours of youtube videos so I abandoned it. And I also thought, I don't really care what shape the earth is as I'm highly unlikely to ever want to circumnavigate it.

Brexit being a good idea makes slightly more sense than a flat Earth and spotlight sun on rail tracks if you drink a bottle of wine before you think about it.

Deadringer · 11/07/2023 17:08

I wonder if flat earthers believe that all the other planets are discs too? Because if they are spheres/round wouldn't it make sense that earth is too? And wouldn't a sphere be simpler for God to design than a disc surrounded by an ice wall, and covered by a dome. And then there's the phases of the moon to figure out. The mind boggles.

Fallenangelofthenorth · 11/07/2023 17:26

I'm not sure they believe in the existence of other planets @Deadringer - either flat or spherical.

Stars are on the firmament and rotate also. A bit like those nightlights you can buy that project stars onto the ceiling.

Fallenangelofthenorth · 11/07/2023 17:29

As for design, I'd have thought a sphere is a much harder project as then you also have to invent gravity and keep the ball spinning at a constant speed, whereas snowglobes are much easier to construct

I would love to drink a bottle of wine before thinking about it, but, thanks to Brexit, I am now severely limited as to how much I can bring back from France when I visit....

Namechanger1002 · 11/07/2023 17:37

This reminds me of the thread on here years ago about people who were convinced dinosaurs never existed 😂 I ended up going a fb group just for the laughs to see what people were saying 🤣
People get very passionate about this stuff 😂

MrsKeats · 11/07/2023 17:43

They are all over the globe.

Fallenangelofthenorth · 11/07/2023 17:46

@Namechanger1002 Flat earth theory and creationism are linked. Both, I think, are based on the fact the Bible doesn't mention dinosaurs and describes the earth as being flat with a firmament. I think that's where these theories originate anyway. So dinosaur bones are a Victorian hoax/bones of giants assembled incorrectly. I find these things quite interesting, but not interesting enough to watch 52 hours of YouTube videos explaining it all.

Blinkinbloodyhayfever · 11/07/2023 17:48

I used to be amused when Flearthers tried to troll Prof Brian Cox with demands of "show us the curve"! 🤣

MrsKeats · 11/07/2023 17:43

I don't think that got the respect it deserved 🤗

Bananas1350 · 11/07/2023 17:50

I do love the fact that they saw there is an ice wall around the edge. But no one has ever taken a photo. Or seen it from a satellite etc etc.

Heatherjayne1972 · 11/07/2023 17:51

Re the planets
they believe the sun and moon are ‘local’
inside the dome . There’s an ice wall which we aren’t allowed to go to because ‘they’ are lying to us. Beyond the Icewall is much land which we have yet to fully explore.
there is no space -we live in an enclosed system which no one has ever left - on the other side of the dome is water -therefore there are no planets stars or space
there’s no gravity either - we stay on the ground because of our weight ( I know. I know)

any footage from anywhere ie ISS live feed / nasa footage / that guy who jumped from the edge of space ( felix something?)etc etc is lies or cgi

it’s easy to believe any old nonsense if you don’t believe any official/ accepted / proven theories

you can’t talk them out if it. I’ve tried
