Is this still a tea time favourite or left in the 1970s?

I am a foreigner, and no way. That's the reason why English food get such a bad name. Protein and carb. No veg. Horrible.

Agree. Yuk. Sorry. There's a reason cooking has moved on. Sad if it's towards the microwave though.
I love jacket potatoes woth allxthe stuff which is a pretty English dish though.

Don't get me wrong, I love English food, especially English Breakfast. Jacket potatoes too.
Just no for egg and chips for a dinner.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/07/2023 21:49

Sometimes , with triple cooked chips or skin on wedges .
Eggs have to be very very fresh , and for me well cooked ,no runny yolks, crispy edges . I only eat eggs that I have cooked and only occasionally .
Add a ladle of beans and you're on Grin

Not had egg and chips for ages (thanks acid reflux). But I’ve got some local lovely eggs and a big bottle of gaviscon so thats tomorrow sorted.
DH had a boss who had egg and chips every night, even Christmas dinner. He did have a huge heart attack in his 50s though.

heidihigh · 09/07/2023 21:58

I haven't had egg and chips for ages.. my grandma used to make it for me and my brother when we were kids though so i do hold a candle for it Smile

Dontfencemein · 09/07/2023 21:58

It’s lovely with spinach.

IKnowItsNotMine · 09/07/2023 22:09

FOOD OF THE GODS.

Girasoli · 09/07/2023 22:23

DC don't like fried eggs but like scrambled egg, oven chips and cherry tomatoes for a quick tea/lunch (the veg is token/decorative in DS2s case)

I like fried eggs but only in a toasted sandwich.

dubyalass · 09/07/2023 22:55

Went to a pub for dinner last night and noticed they had ham egg and chips on the menu. It was a fairly regular meal during my childhood and I was torn between that and the burger last night.

If I have leftover potatoes I'll sauté them and eat with a fried egg, maybe some mushrooms, spinach or beans. A delicious lazy breakfast.

Egg and Chips ♥️

Absolutely perfect

artishard · 09/07/2023 23:04

Egg has to be declared as singular regardless of the number (always 2) on the plate! Never 'eggs and chips'. Incomplete without a slice of cheap buttered white bread.

Make sure you don’t go to France or Belgium where moules and frites is order if the day, not a vegetable in sight 😂

Your loss. It’s lovely

best not pass your disgust of carb and protein on to the Italians with their spaghetti carbonara or the Belgians with their moules frites, or the French with their croque monsieur, or the Mexicans etc etc. Shall o go on? You know brits don’t only eat egg and chips right?

A 'big side salad' with egg and chips?

Peak MN.

😄 😄 😄 😄 😄 😄 😄

LibertyLily · 10/07/2023 01:28

We love egg and (homemade, triple fried) chips and have this for dinner once, maybe twice a month. Always with ham or gammon, usually with a slice of white bread and butter. If we've had a roast the previous day and there's veg left over we'll sometimes have bubble & squeak too, probably with a pickled onion or two. I put cheddar in my bubble & squeak, then smother it in brown sauce...yum! My late dad liked his fried eggs on top of the bubble & squeak.

I don't like egg whites so our ddog gets those.

Not a fan of baked beans with it personally, although DH is, so sometimes he'll have those with the egg and chips too.

Flymetothetoon · 10/07/2023 03:06

Thanks to this thread I know what we're having for dinner but with the addition of gammon steak 🥩

A classic and it’s demise is the ultimate example of how we have lost touch with proper food in the UK. It’s cheap, relatively nutritious and quick to make but people would rather order a takeaway or eat some rubbish they’ve heated up in the microwave.

I actually get it delivered from the take away.

ABugWife · 10/07/2023 06:41

Not had this in ages but love it with mushy peas and a slice of bread and butter.

Absolutely love egg and chips. We sometimes have this as a cheapo tea and sometimes we have egg and beans on toast as well 😂

I love egg and beans on toast. One of my favourite teas!

SpringSummerDreamer · 10/07/2023 07:11

If you eat chips and egg, do you also enjoy chips and fish?

trulyunruly01 · 10/07/2023 07:15

Egg and beans on toast with a little cheese under the beans, lush 'three days till payday' dinner

Tintackedsea · 10/07/2023 07:23

A favourite here! Sometimes with sausages or ham.

Also love a cheese and mushroom omelette and chips which isn't too much more hassle.

Sorry to break to you, but I am a foreigner too and guess what? We eat the same dish here. We should all be ashamed of ourselves!

It's absolutely delicious! On my list for next week's dinner!

It's funny how that happens.

I was eating beans on toast for lunch one day, and my flatmate, who'd recently moved to the UK from North Africa, struck up a conversation about what I was eating. I'd seen people (mostly Americans TBH) commenting online before about how weird it is that British people consider beans on toast an acceptable meal, so was about to go with the "haha, I know it's a bit weird" thing. But instead, she started telling me how similar it was to a dish she grew up with, a thick bean and tomato stew soaked into toasted leftover bread. She told me the name, but I can't remember it now… there's similar dishes online, but all much more complicated.

We seem happy to denigrate low-budget British dishes while lauding similar stuff from elsewhere 🤷🏼

A salad with egg and chips?! My grandparents wouldn't have been doing with that and in any case their salad was cucumber and sliced onions in vinegar. Egg and chips is a favourite vintage tea in my house, along with toad in the hole and mash. Not a dot of green.
