In the voice of Cpl Jones.

"Don't panic Capt Sunak"

"Hold your nerve"

"They don't like it up em".

We have a choice between extremely bad alternative outcomes

The guy in that still from the link looks a bit like Mark Thatcher.

That link reminds me that she hasn't yet inflicted herself on Strictly, but no doubt it's on her list. I wonder if they would go for it? I guess if there's a professional who fancies a guaranteed exit in the first round they might just.

No minister, including Sunak, is able to identify which 'rip off' University degree need 'cracking down' on

The National Audit Office report confirms no 40 new hospitals will be built

By-elections on Thursday

Of course not. What can they say when apparently a degree in hospitality management is a qualification for being Foreign Secretary?

MrTiddlesTheCat · 17/07/2023 15:32

They were discussing the 'low value' degrees on LBC this morning. I can't remember the details but it seems that this info is monitored. Eg they mentioned a media type degree and a creative writing one where average salary 3 years after completing was £14k ish.

Piggywaspushed · 17/07/2023 15:32

The thing is apparently the 15 month measurement is quite arbitrary. After about 5 to 10 years, some of those alleged low calibre graduates catch up on and even surpass some of the prized degrees. Some of the worst paid graduates with the worst career progression are female scientists...

pointythings · 17/07/2023 15:34

At £14k surely that person is part time or self employed, since that is below NMW?

MrTiddlesTheCat · 17/07/2023 15:36

The problem is, how do you measure and decide a course is low value. Van Gogh never sold a painting when he was alive. So how can you say a fine art degree is low value because the artist is working in a coffee shop 3 years on?

I ended up chatting to a series of reps from Swiss Hospitality Management universities at a university event a few months ago. Either they were excellent salespeople or the courses are actually much better than a regular business or accounting degree.

Is this whole thing, not simply a reflection of the GCSE and A-level results that students achieve. Those with better school exam results go on to better paid careers. Now that may or may not be because exam results are a good measure of ability, but they are the measure that is used. Would it not be better if the government addressed why children from particular backgrounds are much less likely to get good exam results, than those that go to Winchester and Eton?

borntobequiet · 17/07/2023 16:56

I think university degrees that exist solely to catapult privileged people into jobs with the Conservative Party as SPADs (hardly a proper job with all that partying) should go. So bye bye PPE at Oxford.

Now that I can sign up to!

It's a dead cat story to deflect attention from the (damning) National Audits report in to the new hospitals.

There is already an Office for Students that has powers to censure course providers.

Partly this but I also think ‘they’ve’ looked at how many loans never hit the threshold for repayment/are paid off and this is their way of reducing that bill. The ‘Micky mouse degree’ appeals to a certain section of society.

Of course it means remaining blind to the fact that degrees, no matter what they are, are essential to get even jobs they’re not strictly needed for. It’s only the last few years I’ve started seeing job requirements start stating ‘degree or equivalent work experience’. They’ve nodded at that swiftly and moved on.

Cornettoninja · 17/07/2023 18:12

Oh and no comment on why there’s a significant portion of graduates who never earn enough to pay back their loans. it’s because wages have stagnated and they’ve been supplementing corporations shit wages through benefits

Yes good point.

Bent Sunak & compromised Chair of Culture Select Committee?

The Tory MP in charge of scrutinising the British media hosted a parliamentary drinks party for GB News, the Guardian has learned.
Caroline Dinenage sponsored an event for the rightwing television channel in a room on the parliamentary estate earlier this month.

Dinenage is chair of the House of Commons culture select committee, which is examining the government’s proposed media legislation, including changes to impartiality requirements.
In recent weeks her committee has questioned whether GB News should be allowed to employ four serving Conservative MPs as presenters. The Tory deputy chair, Lee Anderson, is under investigation for filming some of his £100,000-a-year show on the roof of parliament.

Unsurprisingly the right wingers turned out in force to support GB 'News'.

The Lords are now debating Illegal Migration Bill. Another late night ahead for them.

"Damn. We lost the first vote, on making the Bill obey the law. Content 200 Not Content 217.
That hurts. Even tho the Bill unworkable. Damn."

You'd think obeying the law should be a decent starting point...

RafaistheKingofClay · 17/07/2023 23:13

Depends whether you are breaking the law in a limited and specific way.

RafaistheKingofClay · 17/07/2023 23:26

Obviously you don’t want the primes being educated. They might vote for someone else.

proles not primes.

Notonthestairs · 17/07/2023 23:29

Nothing to do with the state of the nation then? NHS? Education? housing? Water? transport? Economy? Social mobility?
