I have no idea how this is going to play out, but I will be very surprised if both Putin and Prigozhin are both still alive by the end of the year - and stunned if they are both in their current roles.

If both are weakened then that is good for Zelenskyy I guess. But the end does not seem to be anywhere in sight. Who or what really turned things around today I wonder?

There’s probably some level of maskirovka involved in the currents events.

Surely there is always some level of maskirovka in these type of events ? Especially when you think about Prigozhin and what he has at his disposal ?

I have to admit that I was worried about Ukraine and it using this event to push forward and being lured into a trap, but then they have some of the best intelligence at their disposal, so that is reassuring.

Could China have said something?

There's definitely a feel of misdirection about the whole thing, it seemed to end so abruptly. I wonder what earth he has been offered if it was all legit.

It's damaged both of them though, Putin shown up as weak and Prigohzin scared to follow through. Gorbachev survived a coup but he was gone shortly after. Who is going to explain this debacle to the families of the dead Russian pilots

BBC R5 Live has had continuous cover of this all evening, with lots of highly informed commentary. General consensus is that Maskirovka is featuring heavily.

One Russian commentator said that Wagner Group is actually run by FSB, who hold everyone's strings.

I have seen someone say it's the start of Putin's campaign for the election next year. It's possible if he thought it makes him look good, most people wouldn't have 12 of their citizens killed to start an election campaign but he has done worse

Who is going to explain this debacle to the families of the dead Russian pilots

They are Russian pilots so will be hailed as heros and that will be that, no explanation or an inquiry into how,why,what, inquiries are against everything the Russian state stands for.

Oh God. Oh first thought it seems very possible doesn't it.

This kills two birds with one stone. Finally Russia can take over Belorus, and Wagner can attack from the North.

I don't suppose any more fucks will be given about the dead Russian pilots than any of the other Russian soldiers who've been killed during the war. They might get given a shit car or some meat or something.

This could be one of those rare occurrences that happen without any plotting. Maybe Prigozhin just lost his shit after yesterday's strike and went on the mother of all rampages.

Because it seems to have had zero planning and the only intention was essentially "I'm going to kill those bastards".

I wished he had! That seemed to be his main intention. I guess Putin with his threats of death to anyone who opposes him, will summon others and draw a circle around Prigozhin.
