Jack Monroe and the missing money.

Anyone been following this madness? A thread popped up on my feed today about how JM asked for people to PayPal her cash donations last year to take 3 people to court for slander and libel. It’s now passed the date of when she was able to bring this to court and no sign of any money being returned.

Just seems completely bizarre to me, and now I’ve fallen down a rabbit hole and seems this is in no way the first time.

She lived with Allegra whatsherface whilst she was writing the first book, which has the better recipes in it. Wonder why!

Did she? I'd missed that bit of the Venn diagram. The Allegra of Economy Gastronomy?
Priceless. 🤣

WTF? Where did she talk about her labia?

Twitter of course.

Twitter of course.

Poor wee love. Does she need a donation to have them lifted, or plumped, or bleached or something?

HatchetJob · 21/05/2023 08:46

She stretched the story out over the years to make out she also grew up in poverty and her parents were poor. It’s blatantly not true though. She makes out there wasn’t enough food even though the were foster parents. It makes them look bad. (They built a £30k extension to take on more foster children, so I think they were fine).
The funniest thing I saw was she made out she grew up on food stamps in reply to an American tweet, we don’t have those here.

It was a small lie she has allowed to snowball and has made a career from. It’s very damaging to people in real poverty though.

I have never understood how or why she fell into such extreme poverty after being brought up in a decent middle class family. Her dad received an MBE for his services as a foster carer and also works as a firefighter. I find it hard to understand why a pillar of the community like that would let his daughter and grandchild struggle to the extent she describes.

The name change was probably to distance herself from the truth and spare the embarrassment to her family. She is basically an actress playing the part of Jack Monroe.

She’s tried to explain her parents not helping her as a young mum as oh I was so embarrassed by quitting my job that I was forced out of through no fault of my own, in the same sector my father was senior in, that I didn’t want my parents to know I was licking the inside of tins for my meals, so instead I paid for the village newspaper to run an ad for my garage sale. And as the ad inexplicably detailed how poor and pathetic I was, my parents found out and brought me some cocoa pops!

It sounds so mental laying it out as she describes it.

I would take anything she says and reports on Twitter with a pinch of salt.

A huge pinch of salt.

I heard someone the other day talking about people reporting what they believe to be their truth. That they aren’t straight lying as such, but they are saying what they believe happened. And they genuinely believe it.
I think this might be the case here. I wonder if she genuinely believes all this. If she actually thinks it’s true.
Perhaps she honestly thinks that after the Grenfell fire she really did stand their with firefighters and architects looking at the building blue prints trying up work out what happened.

I feel her grip on reality is not all that tight.

Unicorn2022 · 21/05/2023 09:39

Everything is fictional. Even if her parents weren't able to help her for some strange reason, why did the father of her child apparently leave them destitute? What about her siblings, grandparents, friends? She wrote an article in 2019 saying the father of her child was the best man she had ever known, so that would assume he had been a supportive presence and at least paid child support.

She amassed a number of tattoos during her time in severe poverty (she said at one time she had 37 and was about to book more). Nothing wrong with that, but tattoos certainly aren't cheap or a necessity if you can't afford food or shower gel.

Most of her recipes are utter crap - there was one where she took a jar of fish paste and melted it into pasta and called it restaurant quality. The woman annoys me so much. I can't stand grifters.

Ostryga · 21/05/2023 09:55

The infuriating thing with her recipes is that the base ingredients she uses are actually decent, and if she had even an ounce of actual food knowledge, she could make some lovely meals.

But instead she rinses hoops and boils everything with no seasoning to make slop. And has made SEVEN (7) books out of this.

Hmm. The person who wrote that long thread about Monroe has deleted it due to an inaccuracy.

Isn’t it weird she’s got all these friends gifting her Burberry scarves, Tiffany earrings, Tracy Emin original art etc etc….where were they when she was using solar light bulbs and melting soap?!?!

She’s a disgusting liar and I’m enjoying her getting a bit of pushback now.

CharlotteRumpling · 21/05/2023 10:37

That melting down soap bars to make shower gel was the worst poverty cosplay ever. Why would you not just use the soap in bar form?

Well, I guess we know where the legal funds actually were being spent.

Hilarious, isn’t it?

She flew too close to the sun with that one. Writing a sob story blog and waiting for the PayPal cash to start flowing was a well-worn path for her. Her mistake that time (it was less than a year ago I think?) was to make the lies too big and dramatic.

Hmm. It's not really an inaccuracy is it? A person tweeted that they had sent her a tenner when they have a very limited income and now has backtracked on that. And now she's going to delete her Twitter altogether? Hmm

WisherWood · 21/05/2023 11:00

I wonder. If you were living on £69 per week and had tweeted something, how much money would you need to be offered to retract that tweet? I am just idling pondering this of course.

Not sure, but I can't imagine very much.
I've lived on that in the past and would have done that for £100 without hesitation.

No silly, she found most of the designer clothing in a puddle.
The gift from a friend was the Tracy Emin she kept in her loo.

IClaudine · 21/05/2023 11:53

She has a memoir coming out soon, hasn't she? If I was her, I'd use it to tell the unvarnished truth, whatever that may be. I reckon it would sell really well and make her famous. A bit like the James Frey affair, where he did a massive mea culpa on Oprah.

There Jack, if you are reading here, that is my advice to you!

PriamFarrl · 21/05/2023 12:12

She could turn it around entirely and say she is shoring how easy it is to fool people, including the rich and influential.

And yes the person who posted on Twitter says that they didn’t ever send money, but there is a poster on this thread who did, and they won’t be alone.

And I agree. That the ‘I’m deleting this whole thread and my twitter account’ post sounds very like the result of a legal threat.

AutumnCrow · 21/05/2023 13:17

I can imagine her defence of this: in her mind she's thinking of a time when every parent received child benefit regardless of income, therefore child benefit = 'on benefits' = food stamps. She was just doing her US fans a favour really, kinda translating it for them, y'all.

I was under the impression that her son lived with his dad most of the time.

Jellycats4life · 21/05/2023 13:55

I was under the impression that her son lived with his dad most of the time.

My impression is that Jack’s son lived with her when he was younger (when Jack moved in with Allegra McEvedy, her son came too) but there was some crisis point (possibly rehab related) after which it was decided that he’d be better off living primarily with his father.
