Jack Monroe and the missing money.

Anyone been following this madness? A thread popped up on my feed today about how JM asked for people to PayPal her cash donations last year to take 3 people to court for slander and libel. It’s now passed the date of when she was able to bring this to court and no sign of any money being returned.

Just seems completely bizarre to me, and now I’ve fallen down a rabbit hole and seems this is in no way the first time.

I think it's in Leicester next week. Does anyone live near enough to be in the audience and ask about the money?

Never happen. QT audiences are more hand picked than OJs Jury.

No silly, she found most of the designer clothing in a puddle.
The gift from a friend was the Tracy Emin she kept in her loo.

Isn't the "found a designer scarf in a puddle" directly lifted from Marian Keyes character??

Her recipes are really, really bad. She doesn't seem to understand anything about how flavours go together or the actual science of how it all works.

Or about how many calories the average adult need just to maintain breathing-in-and-out, let alone if they are physically active or have a physically heavy job. The portions sizes would be barely adequate for a family of four white mice, let alone adults and a couple of kids.

I tried one of her recipes for the slopalong on Tattle. It was that inedibly foul even the dog turned his nose up at it- and he will eat anything.

It was a huge waste of ingredients and cost an absolute fortune. Nothing like the 20‐oddp per portion she said it would. I'm by no means a pile it high type but one portion of the foul slop I cooked up would have been just right for my toddler, not a fully grown adult.

I donated to the local food project that runs classes on budget cooking from scratch and not a Monroe cookbook in sight

Our dog was the same with the recipe I tried, and she eats her own excrement.

I lost all faith in JM on two things - a) buying what looks like a 'designer dog' while simultaneously moaning about being poor and b) the nasty attack on Jamie Oliver when he was awarded the budget cooking series.

Unfortunately with people like JM, #BeKind only works in one direction (the one which benefits and deflects all criticism from them). As a PP mentioned above, she has a deck of sensitivity cards (disability, neurodiversity, mental health) she pulls out at will to shut down any criticism or as excuses for why she can't be accountable for her behaviour. Awful.

I don't like the way she breadcrumbs mental health disorders, and hints at self-harm, and then goes quietly for a few days sending people into a frenzy of concern.

I think this is one of the ways she's managed to avoid scrutiny - people are worried that she really may be on the edge, when in actual fact she's probably not even anywhere near a cliff.

Ostryga · 26/05/2023 16:45

Her cancer breadcrumbing was the last straw for me. My mum had just finished treatment for breast cancer and her tweets sent me over the edge. Just a completely vile thing to do.

It was disgusting @Ostryga - the cunning way, too, that she didn't actually say it, but hinted and nudged and implied - she is appalling.

Yeah for me it was the breadcrumbing about pregnancy and miscarriage last year.....having lost a lot of babies I found that incredibly vile.

Can someone please send me a Tattle code 🙏

Lunde · 26/05/2023 19:06

I read a few of the slopalongs and the thing that gets me is how little she seems to know about cooking and food. She seems to steal her recipes as some of them use American terms, translates the measurements badly and then swaps out any expensive ingredients for cheap ones and expects it all to work out.

But the thing that really gets me is just hown many of her recipes start with a cold pan - throwing in onion/garlic/veg etc, then pouring some cold oil over the veg and putting the heat on to "fry" - no wonder everything comes out as a greasy mess 😡

Yeah, I remember watching her a few years ago live on something or other and was screaming at the tv as she didn’t heat the oil first - went in as same time as onions 😱

Florissant · 27/05/2023 07:45

She did a segment on Lorraine during which she threw some curry powder into a pan. One of the cameras had a close-up showing that most of the powder ended up on the handle of the wooden spoon she was using.

The camera crew knew what they were doing, even if Jack didn't.

Her entire grifting career has been the result of people not applying critical thinking and taking everything she says as fact.

That's it, really. We somehow seem hard-wired to believe what people tell us about themselves, even in the face of contradictory evidence.

usernother · 28/05/2023 14:05

I bet she's glad that the Schofield stuff has taken the heat off her on Twitter. Just in time for QT on Thursday

By being a pretty, charming middle class woman who is happy to peddle the narrative well off middle class people want to believe, i.e. that if you are on your uppers, all it takes is clever budgeting and you’ll be fine.

It’s soothing to be told that poor people have issues because they are being poor ‘wrong’ because it means if the lives of her well off audience go to shit, they’ll be fine because they will do it right.

I’d be very interested to know what percentage of her audience are actually poor. If she’s selling tickets at festivals, it’s probably not to people who are having difficulty finding money for food.

If you realise that despite what she says, her performative poverty isn’t actually aimed at the poor, her whole performance makes a lot more sense. It also means the gaps don’t show as much because her audience don’t have the life experience to realise some of her hacks are bizarre (if they want an egg ring, they’ll get one off Amazon or pick one up in John Lewis next time they stop in).

@Talia99 Your post is probably the best on the thread! It doesn't matter how many 40p pasta meals you make if you are homeless or can't afford your rent. Being able to cook well on a low income is obviously important but some of the recommended frugalities are patronising, even insulting (draining beans in tomato sauce).

I speak from experience. E.g. when rents for 2 bed properties where I live are minimum £1200. Is fish paste on pasta really going to help me pay the shortfall in rent?

I don't particularly care what Jack of Liz or any of these media people do or don't do.

However, I think its interesting that no media "stars" e.g. Gary Linkekar or all the other liberal politicos in the public eye EVER campaign or criticise the lack of decent, affordable housing in this country. I mean they just NEVER do. I wonder why - couldn't be that they support the status quo fully when it comes down to it??!!

Meanwhile so many homeless families, so much poor accommodation, so many renters shafted, so many greedy landlords. Nobody says a word.

ONLYAIBU · 29/05/2023 11:27

Though Jack Monroe did actually face a shortfall on her housing benefit when renting for a short period, which she mentioned. However, its interesting she ended up simply recommending cheap food as a remedy.

SmallSoupcon · 29/05/2023 12:13

I'm both fascinated and appalled by her total lack of conscience. I've been recently diagnosed with ADHD and I can recognise the coming-up-with-great-ideas-but-failing-to-execute behaviour pattern, followed by creative excuses.

The difference between us (well, one of many) is the scale and audacity of her schemes, with no apparent desire to put things right.

I get wracked with paralysing guilt over missed deadlines, then the stress-induced cortisol kicks in and carries me over the finish line, usually in a period of hyper-focus. This never seems to happen for her.

I also care about other people and my reputation, so tend to over-deliver to compensate for any shortcomings. She seems to possess none of these scruples.

Is it narcissism? Lack of emotional intelligence? An insatiable desire to live on the edge and take risks? Who knows. But it's been going on far too long and the minimal consequences she's faced don't seem to have touched the sides - she's out of control.

I do supremely believe she is doing work on herself as reflected in this absolute guff post.
Oh Jack, give it up.

Crashingly unprofessional to stay up at "raves" till 3am if you have a work commitment the next day. She makes no sense

True 😆

Endlessly flip-flopping from “My life is perfect, my life is wonderful, I’m so lucky” to “I’m so depressed, I’ve dyed my entire wardrobe black to match my mood, why must my life be SO HARD” every couple of weeks/months.

In her defence though that is what depression can be like.
