This bloody emergency alert

It's going to be like when they test the fire alarm at work, isn't it?
You get more and more tense waiting for it, then three minutes before it is due to go off you forget all about it. Then it does go off and you scream like a lunatic and jump so hard that you dislocate something in your neck.

I'd rather just get fried in a nuclear attack and avoid all the stress.

At least we will all know when it is happening though. It actually happened whilst we were on holiday in Germany last year and it was alarming because we didn’t know it was going to happen, but it’s not that bad

XenoBitch · 21/04/2023 21:09

I will be turning my phone off. Seems extreme, but I can't turn off the alert on my phone. It wont let me.

Okunevo · 21/04/2023 21:09

I've turned the alert off and will be turning my phone off to be sure

DrMadelineMaxwell · 21/04/2023 21:11

Could be worse - one was set off accidentally at 4am in Florida recently and scared people somewhat!

Whiskers4 · 21/04/2023 21:12

I'll be working so will be oblivious to it. Phones have to be in locker

HaggisBurger · 21/04/2023 21:12

When is it? Sorry sure I should know?

EmmaEmerald · 21/04/2023 21:13

I was about to post the Florida thing!

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 21/04/2023 21:14

I'll be working and surrounded by other people's devices anyways so even if I switch it off on my phone I'll be aware of it. Plus I don't actually care. I think it's quite a good thing to be aware of dangers around you. If there was an active shooter in my town centre for example or some terrorist activity then at least I could avoid walking into danger.

LibertyLily · 21/04/2023 21:15

I've turned the alert off, although DH hasn't and as we'll be home together I guess I'll still be aware of it happening. I'm afraid he's gone a bit conspiracy theorist and seems to think there's something sinister afoot.

EmmaEmerald · 21/04/2023 21:15

Acytually correction - deSantis confirmed this was a scheduled test, not an accident, and is investigating.

those with phones in lockers - I'd suggest you switch them off in case it drains your battery. I have deactivated the alert anyway.

ItsThePlayBusDingDing · 21/04/2023 21:17

I saw a video of an emergency alert going off about a missing 5yo, and directly because of that she was spotted and saved before any harm came to her.

So much moaning and worrying about this, but they do so much good elsewhere in the world.

Don't you want to know what it will sound like when it goes off for real?

Obviously a joke OP?

Heroicallyfound · 21/04/2023 21:17

I don’t see how it’s any different to having a fire alarm test at work/school.

Heroicallyfound · 21/04/2023 21:18

i.e. usual event, you know it’s coming, it’s really not a big deal

MeinKraft · 21/04/2023 21:19

I'm quite excited about it. Love a bit of drama even if it is only pretend Blush

noeverrest · 21/04/2023 21:20

Honestly I think people are making a massive fuss about nothing. If you don't want it on turn it off on your phone and get on with life.

MadisonAvenue · 21/04/2023 21:21

I’ve turned mine off but I’m going to be at Wembley when it happens so there’s no way of avoiding it and I’ll hear it regardless.

The alerts are turned off so it shouldn't go off for real.

LizzieSiddal · 21/04/2023 21:22

I’m really worried actually, as we will be driving on the motorway and whilst dh and I are aware and ready for it the surrounding drivers may not be. I suspect carnage may ensue.

carriedout · 21/04/2023 21:22

I agree, I am going to forget it is happening and then it will make me jump.

Is emarrassing our system is only just now being set up!

Exactly, I heard the sound on the radio, it wasn't even terribly alarming

People have had trouble finding where to turn it off on older phones

Embarassing in what way? Have I missed some national emergencies through lack of an alarm?
