This bloody emergency alert

It's going to be like when they test the fire alarm at work, isn't it?
You get more and more tense waiting for it, then three minutes before it is due to go off you forget all about it. Then it does go off and you scream like a lunatic and jump so hard that you dislocate something in your neck.

I'd rather just get fried in a nuclear attack and avoid all the stress.

I’ve turned mine off but I’m going to be at Wembley when it happens so there’s no way of avoiding it and I’ll hear it regardless.

Mine is turned on but I am waiting for the moment when half the stadiums phones all blare at the same moment!

Needmorelego · 21/04/2023 21:24

The actual alarm sound is just 10 seconds.
It takes most people longer than 10 seconds to find their phone when it rings.

noeverrest · 21/04/2023 21:20

Honestly I think people are making a massive fuss about nothing. If you don't want it on turn it off on your phone and get on with life.

Some people can not turn it off. Options to do so on my phone are greyed out.

I've turned the alert off, although DH hasn't and as we'll be home together I guess I'll still be aware of it happening. I'm afraid he's gone a bit conspiracy theorist and seems to think there's something sinister afoot.

Chances are he's correct

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 21/04/2023 21:25

Get a grip ffs. You know it's coming . Just get about your day . Have you actually heard it? I have .. It's not that bad.

Put headphones on , embrace it, , scream into the wind ! . Whatever. You can't change it
Like a PP said about a child going missing 😢. I'd rather a test alarm for something that may never happen to potentially a child go missing forever

I saw a video of an emergency alert going off about a missing 5yo, and directly because of that she was spotted and saved before any harm came to her.

So much moaning and worrying about this, but they do so much good elsewhere in the world.

This. Why do people love to make drama out of nothing.

aberlot · 21/04/2023 21:27

@VisionsOfSplendour

Exactly, I heard the sound on the radio, it wasn't even terribly alarming

It's not the sound that bothers me. I have switched it off because of the invasive nature of it. When you live with hyper vigilance you take a lot of steps to keep your home life as predictable and therefore as calm as possible. Unexpected alerts do the opposite. Being aware that it could happen just makes feeds hyper vigilance.

Zizz · 21/04/2023 21:28

I can't see it on mine. Where is it on an android phone? Do I need to download an app, or what? Or will our landline phone ring?

xabia · 21/04/2023 21:28

Pathetic!Grin Find something serious to get worked up about ffs

Yeah, way to make people feel shit for having genuine fear in their lives. Every. Fucking. Day.

moonspiral · 21/04/2023 21:29

Hahaha love this op

I can assure you there is nothing pathetic about c-PTSD.

There will be multiple other conditions people suffer from which will be relevant when considering how they feel about this
.
You are fortunate to be flippant. But you don't have to be rude.

So it's not an issue for you, youve turned it off and it's not unexpected , sorted

WellPlaced · 21/04/2023 21:33

I’m excited!

I would say I should get out more but I already get out loads

CC4712 · 21/04/2023 21:34

My husband had 3 of these alerts over the past few months already. No one else seems to say the same- but he showed me them and the initial alert was alarming as we weren't expecting it.

Are you sure? In the UK, this is the first national test of the system isn't it?

I'm not sure I was saying it wasn't sorted. Just trying to get people with small minds and bad attitudes to think a bit. To be a bit more considerate when they post. But hey, tell me it's sorted in an attempt to shut me down Hmm

AllIeveknewonlyou · 21/04/2023 21:37

MeinKraft · 21/04/2023 21:19

I'm quite excited about it. Love a bit of drama even if it is only pretend Blush

Me too! It's a novelty and just imagine, loads of us will be connected all over the place 😁

You seem determined to take offence

You have a solution to something that's an issue for you, how is that not a good thing?

xabia · 21/04/2023 21:38

@aberlot I'm not being rude. Just surprised that it's still an issue when you have it TURNED OFF.

HaggisBurger · 21/04/2023 21:12

I had never heard of it until this thread so I googled it. Thanks Mumsnet and OP!
