This bloody emergency alert

It's going to be like when they test the fire alarm at work, isn't it?
You get more and more tense waiting for it, then three minutes before it is due to go off you forget all about it. Then it does go off and you scream like a lunatic and jump so hard that you dislocate something in your neck.

I'd rather just get fried in a nuclear attack and avoid all the stress.

Why are people turning it off?

I’s rather hear it in a test for the first time rather than an actual emergency.

I just hope anyone with a second phone for safety reasons know to turn it off.

I wonder how many cheaters will get found out though.

Are you sure? In the UK, this is the first national test of the system isn't it?

Yes! 1st time we were watching TV and his phone went off with a fire alarm type sound in about Jan this year! We are in the UK. He showed me his phone and asked if I knew what it was about? My phone didn't go off though.

Its happened twice since then- but only on his phone. I have no idea if they tested a very small number beforehand or why/how he was picked?

Fizbosshoes · 21/04/2023 21:44

I'm wondering if the volunteers on the baggage lorries at the marathon will hear hundreds of phone alarms go off in people's kit bags!

mrsm43s · 21/04/2023 21:44

I genuinely don't understand the issue with this.

It's testing a system to give us advance warning if and when a national emergency happens. I'd like to be given the opportunity to get to safety if that happens!

We've been warned in advance of the test, and so know what to expect.

What problem exactly do people have with it? They'd rather NOT be alerted and have the chance to get to safety in an emergency or they'd rather the system was left untested and might fail in the case of an emergency?

I second this! It’s also happened to me once before. I was baffled.

@aberlot I'm not being rude. Just surprised that it's still an issue when you have it TURNED OFF.

It's not an issue?

I was explaining why it is turned off because I am sick of people acting like those who turn it off are fucking idiots. The language on this thread alone towards people who have turned it off is utterly disgusting.

A better person would have acknowledged what I said and been nice about it. Not come back for more.

If it's turned off you shouldn't hear it in an actual emergency either

aberlot · 21/04/2023 21:48

@VisionsOfSplendour

You seem determined to take offence

Maybe if you accepted my reasoning rather than having a go, again, I would be less 'offended' - what im actually doing is being goaded into this defence because rather than ignoring or accepting my reason you chose to comment in a negative manner, again.

You have a solution to something that's an issue for you, how is that not a good thing?

I didn't say it isn't a good thing. I explained WHY I turn it off. That's not a bad thing so I'm not sure why you keep coming back?

Maybe just leave it.

Yes- it had a message about it being an alert message. I cant recall the exact wording, but had heard it was coming, so didn't pay it too much attention. Only now that they are saying its only NOW going to be tested, made me wonder why he got alerts months ago!

oakleaffy · 21/04/2023 21:49

I wonder if it to prepare for a nuclear attack..?
What the hell can any of us do..We won't be able to be with our nearest and dearest as the roads will be jammed..

Hopefully it won't be needed.

tailinthejam · 21/04/2023 21:49

My phone's crap and the signal in the house is also crap, so if it follows true to form with how long it takes for me to receive texts, I will be getting the alert ten minutes after everyone else.

bellac11 · 21/04/2023 21:49

I didnt know anything about this so just googled it as well like previous posters

I dont know how to turn it off, just been in settings and cant see how it would work?

🤣 that's quite funny. Not for you at the time though of course 🤗

helpfulperson · 21/04/2023 21:51

Honestly the UK is almost the only country that doesn't already have this!!!!

I'm really not sure what the problem is. My mum is hospital and although most of the patients phones will be off they are ready to deal with anyone whose phone alarms

Mine's settings-notifications-advanced settings-wireless emergency alerts.
I couldn't find it on a family member's phone after searching everywhere.

Where has anyone posted about people turning it off being idiots?

I can see posts saying that worrying about it when you can turn it off is daft but I can't see the posts youre talking about

elmooie · 21/04/2023 21:53

Christ on a bike it’s not so startling or loud that you are going to veer off the motorway, they’re common place in other countries and don’t cause Armageddon :D. I didn’t even hear the last one that went off (different country) as my phone was in the other room.

JenniferBooth · 21/04/2023 21:55

@XenoBitch mine is greyed out as well

Exactly!

aberlot · 21/04/2023 21:56

@VisionsOfSplendour

Can you please just stop?

I have explained I have c-PTSD. I struggle with hyper vigilance. It's is neither unreasonable for me to switch it if nor explain on a thread why

I'm really sorry that you think your posting is appropriate to me, you clearly have an issue. I'm not sure if it's just because i dared to comment to you or if it's just that you are not a very nice person but either way I won't reply to you again.

Most people I have explained this to have been really really nice about it. Have a think...

Elopelo · 21/04/2023 21:57

How are people turning the alert off? Can’t find it on my iPhone.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 21/04/2023 21:58

noeverrest · 21/04/2023 21:20

Honestly I think people are making a massive fuss about nothing. If you don't want it on turn it off on your phone and get on with life.

This. Other countries have these systems, the U.K. is finally catching up. It's no conspiracy.

Justalittlebitduckling · 21/04/2023 21:58

I’m looking forward to the adulterers with secret phones getting found out by their spouses.
