This bloody emergency alert

It's going to be like when they test the fire alarm at work, isn't it?
You get more and more tense waiting for it, then three minutes before it is due to go off you forget all about it. Then it does go off and you scream like a lunatic and jump so hard that you dislocate something in your neck.

I'd rather just get fried in a nuclear attack and avoid all the stress.

You scream like a lunatic when they test the fire alarm at work? Really?

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 21/04/2023 21:59

I'm quite looking forward to it, I'm interested to see what it will be like. I'll make a cup of tea and watch my phone.

It is far more likely to be used for a flood risk or an industrial accident than a nuclear attack. It will be tested nationally as that makes sense but can easily be tweaked for a particular location.

Im loving some of the conspiracy theories though. My favourite is how it's going to do something to the microchips they injected with the Covid vaccines.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 21/04/2023 22:01

Fizbosshoes most marathon runners will have their phones with them to track their progress surely?

JenniferBooth · 21/04/2023 22:02

@Justalittlebitduckling does that include the women who have another man in their lives due to the husband being emotionally abusive

Is that abuse tipping into the physical what you are looking forward to.

I think she was joking...

I’m really worried actually, as we will be driving on the motorway and whilst dh and I are aware and ready for it the surrounding drivers may not be. I suspect carnage may ensue.

Really worried?? Like ACTUALLY really worried?? This place is more and more surreal every day.

How are people turning the alert off? Can’t find it on my iPhone.

Settings > Notifications > scroll to the bottom, past all the individual app settings > two separate sliders for Extreme Alerts and Severe Alerts.
No info as to what they cover! Default is on. Slide off.

ArmatureDramatics · 21/04/2023 22:09

Yet another reason why I am glad I don't have a smartphone.

Missing the point a bit, but if people have hidden second phones, aren't they more likely to be brick phones than a second iphone?

🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ffs, people can't hold off of thinking or posting while having to consider ever possible scenario in the world where someone might find a bloody argument.

Archie671 · 21/04/2023 22:10

I’m just glad to have a warning this time. They did a test run in the town I work in a while ago. The residents of the town I think got told in advance but not those of us travelling for work. Nearly shat myself when it went off. I was driving at the time too!

racquel86 · 21/04/2023 22:12

OP I'm crying with laughter 🤣🤣🤣 I absolutely agree with you too!

Forfrigz · 21/04/2023 22:13

I'm gonna go to a busy place like a mall for the comedy value

Refrosty · 21/04/2023 22:13

I cannot believe people are being so dramatic over this.

I got a good few alerts sent to my phone in America. 2 were missing kids in the area and two were dangerous weather alerts. I thought both were useful.

Yet our alert isn't even for that, and here we are getting in a fuss over what could actually be a life saving thing.

BananaPalm · 21/04/2023 22:13

If you can't handle a test alert OP, how would you be able to handle the real thing if it comes to it? Ridiculous and infantile thinking 🤦🏻‍♀️

ginswinger · 21/04/2023 22:14

The town next to mine in Japan used the air raid siren as a sign for lunchtime. It scared the beejesus out of me.

Goodoccasionallypoor · 21/04/2023 22:15

Out of interest, why do people feel the need to turn the alarm or their phone off so they don't get the test alert?

Swanfavourite · 21/04/2023 22:15

Feels like half the country should just give in to their fears and get their tinfoil hats out. 😅

ApplesandOrangesandPears · 21/04/2023 22:16

I'm dreading it - I will be at work in a public place where there will be a lot of people with phones on all going off at once. Yes it's only 10 seconds but it will be 10 seconds of very loud noise that I can't get away from. I really struggle with loud noises (I have some sensory issues) and 10 seconds can feel like a very long time when the noise is causing horrible physical sensations.

Well, good for you.

Sunshineandshowers39 · 21/04/2023 22:18

The timing seems a bit ill-thought out - Sunday is St George's Day and so lots of parades taking place. My DC are in the Scouts and 3pm is when the Cathedral service starts!

summersoonsurely · 21/04/2023 22:18

Just opt out if you don't want it. Really easy to turn it off if you have an iPhone. Just turn off in notifications.

Greenfairydust · 21/04/2023 22:18

Just turn your phone off. Pointless exercise as far as I am concerned.

You're right. A real emergency would never take place while some people, somewhere may be at an event!

tonyele · 21/04/2023 22:19

Never owned a mobile phone, so unless it comes through on the landline it will pass me by!

Random789 · 21/04/2023 22:19

Yes, I'm afraid this is me exactly. Blush
