Have you been to a drinking establishment no one else has?

@Furries suggested this one so if no one replies, it's on her Grin

I'll start:

Raffles in Singapore
Casablancas in Liverpool (the one with the chippy in the basement)
The Underground in Croydon

@MrsTerryPratchett , @JimmyDurham ,@RampantIvy The Cartoon certainly had its own unique smell didn't it.
Also offer Bar X in Munich, same vibe as The Underground and The Cartoon.

The mosquito bar in Clapham

The Harbour bar in Portrush - the proper downstairs pub bit, not the new bar upstairs

The Bear Inn, in a town called Street in Somerset, which was until the late 90s run by Quakers as a dry/alcohol-free pub

I used to go the Harbour loads in my mis-spent youth. I will offer up The Hatfield in Belfast, where an old boy helpfully pointed out some recent bullet holes where we were sitting). The Endeavour Tavern in Lancelin WA. And my favorite pub in the world, DeBarras in Clonakilty, Co. Cork. Honourable mention to Ciaran Danny Mike's on Cape Clear Island too.

Darling Darling in Fremantle

I was in there a few weeks ago.

Devilledchicken · 10/04/2023 04:29

My offerings

Cricket Club and bar, Colombo
Golden Tiger, Prague
Dojo Bar, Okinawa

Benn to Raffles as well just an overpriced tourist trap with weak spirits.

The Boat (the Tux,) many a happy night there, one night a guy parked his brand new Jag right at the side of the steps to get onto the boat, showing off really, but not that clever......the tide went out, the steps came down and crushed his car!

I must be a bit dim - the thread title says ‘that no one else has been to’ but quite clearly (even the lauded Raffles) loads of people have gone to all of them.

is there an implied ‘famous/trendy/secret special club’ in the title.

Explain it to the dim kid here

I wanted to give people an easy pick. So Raffles was the one.

But the idea is to both 'win' by having an exclusive place no one has been to. But also to 'meet' other MNers who've been to the same place as you.

So having been to the The Cartoon in Croydon, I might 'win' but if I 'lose' I still find fellow MNers.

Marathon kebab house in Camden. If you know you know 🤣

Yes! Been there many a time back in the day.

I’ll try the underground in Dundee, and a nightclub in London that had a swimming pool (no one else remembers it, but I think it might have been called Aqua..)

Yes the Aqua was near Old Street roundabout.,Went there a couple of times, didn't go for a swim.

NeedToKnow101 · 10/04/2023 05:20

Just remembered it was called Aquarium, not Aqua.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 10/04/2023 05:28

I was in Aquarium or whatever it was called once, for about ten minutes. I have never seen so many sleazeball men in all my life. I didn't see anyone in the pool either, maybe because I made a quick exit! I seem to recall spending longer in the queue than I did in the club. I don't even know what I was doing there, it wasn't my kind of place at all!

ReginaPhalangee · 10/04/2023 05:32

Le Cercueil, Brussels (where we drank beer out of skulls)

The Night and Day, Rome

The Cauldron Inn, Exeter

From the recent adds to the thread, I can also count such diverse bars as the hotel bar at the Ole Sereni, Nairobi (was the old airline crew hotel) and the Haworth Arms Hull. I get around a bit. 🤣

Yes. I’ve been to the Ole Sereni.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/04/2023 06:08

I'm struggling to remember names of places from my travels, so please cut me some slack on my weak offerings:

Tommy Bahamas resto/bar, Maui
The "bar" at the"new" paleo, Corfu
The Blarney Stone, Vancouver

Loving the stories on this thread! 😁

CakeIsNotAvailable · 09/04/2023 22:08

Quids Inn, Douglas, IoM

Probably the biggest dive I've ever visited 😂

I've never studied at the University of Liverpool, but I've spent many a night in their student union bar - does that count?

I'm fairly sure I've been to the Quids inn in Douglas

My ones

Bananas, Thika Road, Nairobi
Outdoor Inn, Nairobi
Casablanca, Nairobi

Pseudonamed · 10/04/2023 06:32

Have also been to Bruxelles. Far too many times.

I think I am missing the point of the thread though. I thought we were just naming out of the way pubs or bars we have been to that we assume other MNetters have not been to or is it a type of place we are to name?

Devilledchicken · 10/04/2023 06:50

Another coupe

Robinsons in the Bigg Market Newcastle in the 80's was very plush

Jubilee rock bar also Newcastle fantastic nights there

Devilledchicken · 10/04/2023 06:51

Another couple......dear god

backinthebox · 10/04/2023 06:53

@@MrsTerryPratchett “Was that the one with the barman who would give you whatever he felt you needed (which was never what you ordered) and at closing he would throw the keys to whomever was nearest the door so they could lock everyone in? And you paid whatever he thought you should (typically a tiny fraction of the price).”

That was the one! The owners would shout ‘shots!’ and come round and give everyone a shot of tequila. They had lots of different flavoured vodkas too, which were homemade and some of them looked quite disgusting (Dime Bar vodka which was brown with bits floating in it!) but the Pear Drop one was tasty. They went bust in the end, but was glorious while it lasted.

Yes to Baa Bar too, although you were more likely to find me in the Cavern or Flanagan’s Apple.

Alondra · 10/04/2023 07:13

I think I know how to play the game now. 🙈

ok, I’ve been to the Oli Sereni

and how about

The Pub in the Old Gulf Hotel, Muscat.

There must be some older airline crew who’ve been there.

Glitteratitar · 10/04/2023 08:36

RedisthenewGold · 10/04/2023 02:12

Woolshed behind the bar 1993- 94 Square shaped bar, roof but open air to the sides (if that’s the one) many tables for dancing on. I saw a new band Jamiroquai in a tiny bar in Sydney, there was digererdoo player and the band passed spliffs to the audience. Boy George was DJ to a rave in Sydney that year.

The Spaniards Inn, Hampstead and the Flask, Highgate are the best for memories of sausages and cheese rolls on the bar under a Perspex hood.

Spaniards Inn for the best Sunday roasts! Been to the Flask a fair few times too.
