Did you have a giant baby? How did they grow as a child?

DD is 5 months and quite large. She was large at birth (9 pounds at 38 weeks). She’s above the 91st percentile for weight and literally off the chart for height. She barely fits in 12 month clothing (of a variety of brands) and I’ve bought 18 month now which fits without much room to grow. She’s wearing many of her brothers hand me downs so I know she is much bigger than he was at the same age. (Some clothes she wears now fit DS when he was walking at 15 months). She is a full 6 cm longer than my best friend’s baby, who is 1 week younger and on the 75th centile.

DH and I are average though he does have tall family members. Is she likely to just have those tall genetics or might there be something wrong with her? Or is this just an early growth spurt that will even out after six months?

My dd1 was 9 pounds when born at 39 weeks. She was long and chunky.

She's 7 now and very very slim. She's just above average height wise, and usually wears clothes one year older than her actual age.

Obviously your lg may be different, but things can change

My second ds was 9lb and is now 6ft 5ft at 21 years old. Dh is around 6’2 and I’m 5 7 1/2. Ds 1 was smaller at birth and is around 6 3.

AuntieMarys · 09/04/2023 14:27

Son was nearly 12 lbs.
He's 6 foot 3 and skinny as an adult

My almost 10lb DD is now a fairly tall 5’7” slim 18 year old (I’m 5’9” and DH 6’2”)

Our 11lb DS is tall and athletically built for his age, we expect him to grow taller than me, maybe not as tall as DH but who knows?

HobnobsChoice · 09/04/2023 14:29

Dd was 9lb6 born at 39 weeks. She's 9 now and very slim with very long legs. Every pair of legging she's had since she was about 4 had been baggy.
Ds was 8lb12 at 38 weeks and is now 5. He is slim although was an absolute enormous baby and chunky toddler but once he learned to run and had a growth spurt at 3 he has been perfectly proportioned. He has to have all his trousers with adjustable waistbands pulled to the tightest setting or else they slide down.
I'm not very tall and none of my family are especially tall. My husband isn't either and his maternal side is generally very short. I suspect the kids will end up similar height to us, around 5'6 to 5'9

ItsThePlayBusDingDing · 09/04/2023 14:30

Ds was 9lb 2oz, is now 21 and 6ft 4, was skinny as a teen, but now goes to the gym regularly so has a muscular frame, he was taller than me by the age of 10.

Findyourneutralspace · 09/04/2023 14:31

My DS was 9lb 8oz. He’s 17 now and is 6ft1ins and still growing. He has what I’d call a rugby player build. Not fat, but broad and solid. He’s always been that way.

His brother, who was 8lb 2oz, is fully grown, 6ft 3ins and willowy, like a string of spaghetti.

Its just the way they are made.

MummyJ36 · 09/04/2023 14:31

My DH was 9lb at birth apparently and he’s now 6’5” !! His parents are only a bit above average for height (5’7” and 6’). Im interested to see how my DS gets on as he was 9lb 15oz when he was born at 39 weeks and is already in 9-12month clothes at 7 months!! I foresee a very tall boy!

Saying that…my mum was 9lb at birth and she’s only 5’5” now and fairly petite so it isn’t a given that you’ll be super tall if you’re big at birth.

Babyroobs · 09/04/2023 14:31

DS3 was 9lb 4 at bitrth, was a big baby, slightly chubby toddler and child and then in teen years extremely thin. He's 20 now and just starting to fill out a little but only because he's at Uni and eating a load of junk food I suspect !

IWishIWasABaller · 09/04/2023 14:32

Son was 9lbs 9oz always way taller and bigger than his classmates , was very chunky around 8-11 years and now 6'5 & slim at 17 years

TomatoSandwiches · 09/04/2023 14:32

My first child DS15 was 9lb10oz and is now 193cm, 14st ish, absolutely solid

My second, DD11 was 8lb 3oz and has been at the 50th centile consistently for both height and weight since 1yrs old.

I tend to find chunky babies lean out as adults though, lots of very naturally slim friends have outrageously chubby baby pictures.

My dd was around the same size when born and very long. Is now 5’ 10, very slim but in proportion. Think she’s probably stopped getting taller now. She’s only slightly shorter than her dad.

She was able to start patting me on the head at the age of 13, so you’ve got that to look forward to, I don’t love being the family short arse but it’s useful for cupboards 😊. We’ve noticed as she’s grown up she’s not that unusual height wise amongst her friends so don’t let it bother you, there’s plenty of evidence that suggests people are generally getting taller down to good nutrition. She sounds lovely and healthy.

IncompleteSenten · 09/04/2023 14:37

Mine were 10.4 and 10.5 pounds.

They didn't fit newborn stuff and went straight into next size up.

They looked massive at the side of other newborns but it evened out within a couple of years. They are adults now and they're both about 5ft 11 . I think. I'll have to go measure them to check. so not very tall.

I'm just under 5ft 2 and my husband is 5ft 8 so they did well to get to 5 11 😁

RandomMess · 09/04/2023 14:38

3 large babies.

1 stayed tall and stopped growing at 11/12 is 5'7

1 stayed tall until 5 and has ended up 5'5

1 stayed 75th for height but was down to 25th and below for weight at 12 months. Has needed up 5'6.5

DH and family are tall, my family are short but my Mum had big birth weight babies too.

Neolara · 09/04/2023 14:40

My ds was 8lb 10oz when he was born at not quite 37 weeks. So, enormous.

He is now 16 and a very slim and muscly 6 foot. He spent most of his childhood tracking the 50th centile for height, so I'm a little surprised he has grown this tall.

henchhen · 09/04/2023 14:40

DS was 11lb 13. Hes been the tallest or close to the tallest all through school. He also started puberty at 8 and now, at 12 sports a full beard. That may, or may not be related 🤷‍♀️.

TheFairyCaravan · 09/04/2023 14:41

DS2 was 8lb born at 37weeks but was 60cm long. He was always taller than his schoolmates. He’s 26 now and is 6ft5 and slim. He’s asthmatic and was on a lot of steroids when he was little. There was concern that his growth might have been affected but I guess it wasn’t.

DH is 6’4, I’m 5’4. DS1 was an average sized baby at 8lb3 and is 6’3.

pickledandpuzzled · 09/04/2023 14:44

My 10lb 4oz boy turned into a petite young adult- about 5'7".

My 9lb boy is about 5'8", 5'9".

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 09/04/2023 14:46

Mine weren't particularly heavy (both below 8 pounds) but they were both very long (high 90s percentilewise). Dc1 is 8 and 137 cm ish. Dc2 is 4 and 116 cm. I think they're both still tracking their percentiles for height. I'm currently buying age 10 stuff for dc1 and 6 to 7 for dc2, altering waistlines where I need to (both are skinny). The HV saw dc2 fairly recently and wasn't bothered at all.

snowymountainsandahotchocolate · 09/04/2023 14:49

My son was 11lb and is tall and slim

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 09/04/2023 14:50

DD was born on the 98th percentile for both height and weight at birth. She maintained the look of a hairy butterball until about 4, when she started to "stretch" out and get very tall but very thin. She's still like that at 11 - 5'4, but very slim. Have buy trousers age 13-14 then haul them in with a belt to keep them up.

collywobble · 09/04/2023 14:50

11Ib 13 at birth and now a tall 6ft 5 skinny build . Always very skinny right through childhood and not particularly tall until puberty .

Tiredmum100 · 09/04/2023 14:52

Ds was nearly 10lb. As a 9 month old he was as a told as the average two year, health visitor was quite shocked. He's 9 now. Tallest in his class, and lanky.

Bakinhappy · 09/04/2023 14:52

One almost 10lb and one almost 11lb.
Both tall and skinny aged 9 and 3 now.
