Did you have a giant baby? How did they grow as a child?

DD is 5 months and quite large. She was large at birth (9 pounds at 38 weeks). She’s above the 91st percentile for weight and literally off the chart for height. She barely fits in 12 month clothing (of a variety of brands) and I’ve bought 18 month now which fits without much room to grow. She’s wearing many of her brothers hand me downs so I know she is much bigger than he was at the same age. (Some clothes she wears now fit DS when he was walking at 15 months). She is a full 6 cm longer than my best friend’s baby, who is 1 week younger and on the 75th centile.

DH and I are average though he does have tall family members. Is she likely to just have those tall genetics or might there be something wrong with her? Or is this just an early growth spurt that will even out after six months?

Both of mine were over 10lbs...and both are now very tall and very skinny (5'8 and 5'9, size 6!). Whereas I'm 5'3 and a size 16 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤣

Borracha · 09/04/2023 17:51

My first was over 10lbs and the other two were both 9lbs. All 3 (now 7, 4 and 1) are pretty average both in terms of height and build.

WashAsDelicates · 09/04/2023 17:52

My 11lb-er is now a 6'3" 15yo with size 14 feet. Slender, though, and always has been.

Hoping he starts growing outwards soon, and stops growing upwards (or longwards, for his feet) as it's challenging to find clothes that both fit properly and are affordable.

DS1 was much the same size as your DD. He was tall and slim all through childhood, very high percentile for height. He is an adult now and just under 6'.

DS2 was under 7lb. Completely average height all childhood - eg age 8-9 clothes fit him perfectly when he was 8-and-a-half. He has stopped growing now and is exactly the same height as DS1.

BumpyaDaisyevna · 09/04/2023 18:26

9lb8oz - very long baby.

Now a very tall skinny 11 year old.

Siddalee · 09/04/2023 18:32

i was told that at the age of 2 a boy is half the height he’s going to be as an adult. It worked out for my boys who were 3ft 2” and 3ft 3” at the age of 2. They’re now 6ft4” and 6ft7”

I was told that it’s 18months for girls but I’ve no one to test that with.

Russyred · 09/04/2023 18:34

My 7lb’er is a slim 6ft 3 at 19

ILoveMyCaravan · 09/04/2023 18:36

My first born was 9lb 3oz, born at 41 weeks. He was very long! He's now 22 yrs and a slim 6ft 5". He was always in clothes 2-3 years bigger than his age.

Lemoncurd · 09/04/2023 18:41

10lb 5 boy, always tall but not tallest amongst peers. Middle of healthy weight category. As an adult, just under 6ft.

10lb 3 girl, one of tallest growing up, always slim, lower end of ideal bmi. 5ft 8 as an adult.

And the small one - 9lb 8 boy, always very tall, very slim, close to underweight for height at times, 6ft 1 at age 13 and growing!

GiveUsACwtch · 09/04/2023 18:42

My youngest DS was 9lb 13 born at 39+5. Has always followed above the 91st centile for both weighy and length. He was 6 in jan. Not sure of his current weight but he's wearing age 8-9 purely for the length and towers over the other children in his class. I'm 5'6 and DH is 6'2 so definitely gets it from his dad.

FKATondelayo · 09/04/2023 18:44

I have two nephews who came into the world at 9lb+ and another who was 2lb 9oz at birth. They are all now in early 20s and all 5'9".

Schmutter · 09/04/2023 18:46

My husband was 10.6 lbs at birth and is now a shortish (5’10) and skinny adult.

Our eldest was 9.5 at birth and is now a slim and not remarkably tall, 6ft 1.

The youngest was only 7lb13, and skinny up until the last year or so, but is now 6’3.

Groutyonehereagain · 09/04/2023 18:47

DS was 9lbs 1oz. He’s always loved his food but he’s always been stick thin. He’s an adult now and eats like a horse and is still skinny.

BellsaRinging · 09/04/2023 18:49

Ds was 10 and a 1/2 pounds and is now at 12 skinny and average height.

Beamur · 09/04/2023 18:50

My big baby stayed on the generous side throughout primary school. Never fat but tall and athletic looking. Basically stopped growing once she went to high school!
Now she's a petite 5 foot 3.

Moonflower12 · 09/04/2023 18:51

My DS was born at 36 weeks. He was 9lbs 12oz.
He is 25 now and very slim and about 5'10".

Cormoransjacket · 09/04/2023 19:19

My 9 Ib 8 oz baby was on the 9th centile for height by his two year check.
My 8 Ib 11 oz baby is now ridiculously tall with enormous feet.

SeeWhatYouGetWhenYouAskAStupidQuestion · 09/04/2023 19:22

My 2nd baby (he's actually in his early 40s now) was 10lb 14oz. He was 23 inches long (58cm) and his head circumference was 38cm. He wore clothes for a 3-month-old, from birth (even 1st size nappies didn't fit). Back in the 80s, we didn't have "percentile" measurements. He was very chubby until he started school, then he slimmed out. He's now an average-sized man

Flipflopflips · 09/04/2023 19:25

DS was 9lb5 at birth, always looked so much older than his years. He's now 13 and already 6'4! His dad is the same height.

He's very skinny though, although quite muscular as he's very sporty.

The formula that you can use at birth to predict adult height (or double height when 2 for final height) all predicted he'd be 6'4 full height. He hit puberty quite early, so I don't think he'll grow much more.

jmh740 · 09/04/2023 19:26

First born 10.3 now 28 6.2 and very slim. Dd 10lbs now 16 and average/tall is about 5.7 ds 10.4 13 and quite tall for his age but not massively so he's about 5.9 I buy him small/med mens clothes he has size 10 feet

GoddessofWar · 09/04/2023 19:33

I’ve had two whoppers! DD1 was off the centiles for height at birth and over 90th for weight. The midwives came to have a look at her she was huge compared to other babies! They are both tall and slim now.

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 09/04/2023 19:35

9lb 12 is now an average size 5ft 8 slim 17 year old.

11lb 3 is a slightly rounded tall 8 year old now.

Both have them have always been in the size bigger for them (8 year old is in 9 to 10) bit it evens out once teens and DS averages mens small to medium.

Shopper727 · 09/04/2023 19:37

Eldest was 9lb5oz average height growing up now 6’3 (21)my other son was 7lb 9 oz 5’8 @ 18

my nephew was 11lb+ at birth big lad but now an ordinary sized little boy he’s a fab kid but not super tall but my sister and her husband are both tall - I’m not however at 5’2 - her older kids are tall.

Houseyvibe · 09/04/2023 19:38

Eldest was 7lb 6. Gained 1lb a week and was 20lb at 16 weeks. He had no neck, rolls everywhere and was absolutely huge, largest baby we ever saw by a mile. At 21 he’s 5ft 10, solid but slim. He was amongst the tallest of his group of friends until he was about 16 and now he’s totally average and even looks small at times

doadeer · 09/04/2023 19:40

My son is still only 4, but he was 9lbs 4 born before due date and he is really tall now. He is slender but considerably taller than other kids in his class and huge feet! I am 5ft 9 and DH is 6ft 4 though so we expect a tall kid!
