Did you have a giant baby? How did they grow as a child?

DD is 5 months and quite large. She was large at birth (9 pounds at 38 weeks). She’s above the 91st percentile for weight and literally off the chart for height. She barely fits in 12 month clothing (of a variety of brands) and I’ve bought 18 month now which fits without much room to grow. She’s wearing many of her brothers hand me downs so I know she is much bigger than he was at the same age. (Some clothes she wears now fit DS when he was walking at 15 months). She is a full 6 cm longer than my best friend’s baby, who is 1 week younger and on the 75th centile.

DH and I are average though he does have tall family members. Is she likely to just have those tall genetics or might there be something wrong with her? Or is this just an early growth spurt that will even out after six months?

DD1 was 75% centile moving up to 91% by 6 months.
She was one of the tallest in her form until she was 8yo then she didn't grow for a couple of years following illness, but I'm not sure if that was related.
She's slightly smaller than average height now.
Dd2 was tall and stayed tall.
Ds was average and has stayed average.

My 10lb DS is 5'8 and has size 11 feet at 12yo and is still growing like a weed.

rogueone · 09/04/2023 14:57

My DD was 9lb 6 and is now a 5ft 9 size zero 19yr old.

my DS was 11lb 4 and I ended up with growth hormone issues due to a brain abnormality so has needed injections. However at 16 he is slim
and 6ft 3

I was 11lbs when I was born. I am now 5’1” and 8stone. I have always had great physical health (I’m mid 50s) and have read that a high birthweight can correspond to physical robustness. It certainly was no reflection of my adult size. My own children were just average birthweights.

TheFormidableMrsC · 09/04/2023 15:01

DS was 9.5 lbs. He's 12 now and wearing clothes in either men's small or around 15 years. He's tall and very broad across the shoulders and chest. He's similar to most men in my family so I'm expecting him to be well over 6 ft.

evtheria · 09/04/2023 15:04

I was over 9 pounds, became a really chunky baby and toddler eg my older siblings lovingly referred to me as the Michelin Man.
Then about school age I became skinny. I'm now 5'3 and still very slim, but not surprising as both my parents were skinny and my mum is very short, so I'd be looking at both family side genes!

Changingmynameyetagain · 09/04/2023 15:05

Ds1 was 9lb5oz and full term.
He’s 14 and 5’11 and size 10 feet. He’s growing like a weed, he’s grown 12cm since May last year.
His dad is 6’2 and I think he’ll be taller than his dad.

WeAllHaveWings · 09/04/2023 15:05

Ds was 9lb 10oz and born at just over 38 weeks.

Now 19, healthy build and 6ft 3in.

Was very chunky as a baby, never crawl d, but once up and walking skinny as a child and always one of tallest in class, but was also one of the oldest.

RightOnTheEdge · 09/04/2023 15:09

My ds was over 10lbs at birth but gradually went down the centiles instead of up. He's now very skinny and although he's the oldest in his class he's also one of the smallest.

He had all sorts of tests and got weighed at the hospital every few months for the first few years but they never found anything wrong with his blood tests or anything and I had a fear they would think I was neglecting him but they said he looked healthy and had plenty of energy so he wasn't wasting away.
He has always eaten normally and is very active and sporty.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 09/04/2023 15:11

8lb11oz at 37 week, she's 8 now, wears age 11 clothes, a head taller than the other girls in class, standing at about 5ft I think.

P3N · 09/04/2023 15:11

My children were 9lb5 and 9lb2. Both on the 98th percentile? My 13 Yr old is 5ft4 and my 7 Yr old is 4ft5 so both quite tall for their ages.
I'm only 5ft6.

PollyThePixie · 09/04/2023 15:15

My 5th child weighed in at 5kgs. He was long and big boned but he was also well padded. At 32 he’s now about 6 foot 3inches and an absolute hunk. He doesn’t have any fat on him. He’s just well built skeleton wise.

QueenSmartypants · 09/04/2023 15:16

Frank Sinatra was apparently 13lbs when born but didn't grow particularly large in either direction!

DancingDrunk · 09/04/2023 15:18

My friends daughter was 10lb and very long as a baby. As a toddler she was average height and weight and at 18 is now around my height so 5’6”ish.

My daughter was average length/weight at birth but got very, very long in the first few months. Through primary school she was always one of the tallest but at 14 she’s 5’5” and seems to have stopped growing.

CakeIsMyFavouriteAndBest · 09/04/2023 15:18

My youngest DD was 9lb at birth and didn't really fit newborn clothes that I had from my eldest. She was then really poorly with reflux and CMPA and dropped to lowest percentiles. Grew out of that at 2 and is now 12. I'd say she was average height and slim but she would say she's shorter than a lot of her friends but she can wear age 12 clothes just fine. She's certainly on the smaller side though.

Batmanandrabbit · 09/04/2023 15:19

My DD was 9lb 10 97th centile for height and weight. She’s stopped growing now at 16 and is around 5’ 10 and slim. She is tall but not freakishly so (and it helps that people like Taylor Swift wear their height with pride!) She’s a few inches taller than me and really rocks it!

Forever42 · 09/04/2023 15:19

Both my DDs were over 9lbs. Now 13 and 10 and both on the shorter side of average, medium build. Usually around the 50th centile for BMI. Think I just had a healthy placenta in pregnancy as DH and I are average height. He is stocky, I am slim. DC1 in particular did "catch-down" growth and put on weight very slowly for the first few months.

dooneyousmugelf · 09/04/2023 15:21

9lb12 followed by two 9lb siblings. All have turned out very tall. I don't know about centiles etc as I never gave it much thought when they were younger.

weegiemum · 09/04/2023 15:22

My 9lb12oz dd1 is now 23, size 10 and 5'10" tall.

Ds was 9lb3 and really chunky as a baby. He's now a 6'3" 21 year old student nurse and we had to get his uniform trousers in to 29" waist as they were falling down when we got them long enough for his height!

Dd2 was much smaller as a baby and remains shorter and slimmer than her siblings.

They're all really lucky. I'm huge!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/04/2023 15:22

DS was long (99% centimetres, something like 58 cm) but not especially heavy (7lb 10oz) at birth (37 weeks), bjt his feet were too long for any sleepsuit. He has maintained this stature for 14 years, and is now 6'2", with size 14 feet.

elliejjtiny · 09/04/2023 15:22

All my full term babies were nearly 9lb at birth and 53cm long. My premature babies were both nearly 9lb and 53cm long at their due dates. I just seem to grow them that size. They are all different sizes now. Dc4 is really tall and dc3 is really short. The others are average height. Dc1 is quite chubby, dc3 is skinny and the others are about average.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 09/04/2023 15:23

Ds was 10lb at birth . He is now 9 and completely average sized.

Bemyclementine · 09/04/2023 15:26

Dc1 9lb 1 at 39 weeks. Aged 7 now and tall and very slim.

Dc2 10lbs 14 , frankly huge. His baby pics are...well. he just looks bloody massive. He's still tall for his height and also slim.

I'm 5ft 7, their dad is 5ft 9.

HerRoyalStressHead · 09/04/2023 15:30

My 10lb 10.5oz bundle of joy is now a very healthy and active 7 year old. Average height, 50th centile for weight. He settled out once he got to around 3 and started to lose the puppy fat.

ButterflyBitch · 09/04/2023 15:31

My son was 8lb 14 at birth (bang on time) and was always consistently two sizes ahead of his age. So was in 5-6 clothes at 3, 10-11 clothes at 8. Now at 13 he’s looking down at me from a lofty 5 foot 9 and has size 11 feet. I really hope his feet stop growing soon as it’s getting expensive! He’s never been fat apart from the odd bit on his tummy when he eats too much but on the whole has been tall and slim throughout.
